Horrible

Nothing but a runaround. We are doing a loan assumption between my sons. He was approved but they failed to let us know they closed the file. We had to reapply and they denied the 2nd time. They are horrible with communication and have given us nothing but a run around. The original loan was bought out by M&T, I would NEVER recommend!!! Awful.

This is a joke of a bank

This is a joke of a bank. Financed an RV through them at the dealership. Paid monthly payment for a few months and then Paid the loan off through their archaic banking portal.(Seriously just a step above smoke signals.....) After a month or so I got a statement saying the payment didn't go through and that I owed fees. It never hit my bank so my bank can't tell me what happened. M&T closed my online access to the account when they said I paid off the loan which I verified through their online banking department. I had online statements only and I am trying to figure out why my pay off didn't go through and get them paid, but they won't talk to me or even send me a payoff statement without knowing what my last payment amount was, which was the payoff amount. I have no Idea what that number was since it never hit my bank account and they have me blocked out of online access! I have spent over an hour on the phone and talked to 4 different people so far and now they say they will have to call me back. So I guess their tactic is to just try to ruin my credit while amassing late fees and interest. This is even after verifying my SSN and all other pertinent information to the loan. All the information they are requiring for me to talk to them they have blocked access to. This has to be illegal. A hot poker to they eye would be better than dealing with these people. Run away. I fully expect that they will say that this is to protect people yada yada yada, but sending a payoff statement to the address on the account or to the email on the account would be doing the person that has the loan a favor and be alerting them to possible fraudulent activity, not a security risk. Everyone says the same thing, "I can't help you because we have to follow procedure." I do understand the importance of procedures, however when your procedures are offering zero protection and just a blind religion you're employee drones are following so they can keep their jobs instead of using common sense, It's just ridiculous.

Incompetent Bank

This incompetent company acquired our mortgage in early 2025, our home insurance policy and windstorm policies combined went up roughly $450 ANNUALLY. M&T Bank raised our MONTHLY payments $800. Apparently they don't understand what annually means. Also, we have been getting an "other" charge that nobody in this company can explain to the tune of another near $200 a month. Our entire payment has gone up over 30% due to the incompetence of this bank. I get taxes increase, but I dont think they increased $800 a month.

Look elsewhere

After banking with them for 20 years, they were no help when I needed them. Despite having a great credit rating and continually being called a valued customer.

My experience deserves ZERO stars

My experience deserves ZERO stars. As a first-time homebuyer, I was forced to use Corelogic through M&T Bank's program, and it's been disastrous. Just two months into my mortgage, they incorrectly disbursed funds from my escrow account, creating a significant shortage. This error skyrocketed my monthly payment by $653.19, a 28% increase.

My mortgage, initially 50% of my income (what M&T needed to approve me), is now an unsustainable 78% because I effectively paid a year of escrow in advance, only for them to mismanage it. Now, I'm forced to pay my entire second year's portion upfront. Money that I could make more money with or at least the current interest rate.
Despite their mistake, Corelogic or M&T has offered zero support or communication, leaving me stuck paying a mortgage that jumped from $2,200 to $3,000. My attorney and Corelogic's own data confirmed this was due to their error, not a home reassessment or tax change.

Avoid Corelogic and M&T Bank's first-time homebuyer program at all costs.

I closed my business account because of…

I closed my business account because of unnecessary and unreasonable fees. The bank wrote me checks made out to the business and then refused to cash the checks because they said business checks cannot be cashed. They are really incompetent.
I am following up with an update. A few days later - after I filed a BBB complaint - the Bank figured out how to give me my money back. I'm keeping the rating at 2 stars, which I think is quite generous.

Worst bank ever

Worst bank ever. Someone tried to cash a check in my name and they flagged it and closed my account and kept my social security check without even telling me. M&T shouldn’t be illegal. This happened to a friend of mine too. Stay far away from them. Please save your friends and family from this horrid ‘bank’ too.

WARNING

WARNING: Deceptive Practices and Incompetence at M&T Bank

If you value your time, money, or sanity, STAY FAR AWAY from M&T Bank.

I opened a new account online in response to their $500 promotional offer, fully completed the application, and even received a debit card, checks, and a welcome letter. I redirected my Social Security income to them—only to be told after the fact that my account “never existed” because I supposedly didn’t respond to an email I never received.

That’s right—no notification, no U.S. mail, no phone call. Just an invented excuse to deny the bonus they promised. I checked my inbox and spam folder: the only emails I received from them were standard welcome messages, not one word about verifying my identity. Yet they had no problem sending me checks, a debit card, and a closing statement later.

When I tried to fix this in person, I was offered a pathetic $100 instead of the $500 I was promised. This is classic bait-and-switch behavior and reeks of corporate dishonesty.

Worse yet, M&T’s screw-up forced me to travel in person to the SSA to fix my direct deposit. Hours wasted. Stress inflicted. Financial disruption caused—all because of their internal failure.

Their left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing. Emails say one thing, letters say another, phone reps say something else entirely. If this wasn’t so maddening, it would be laughable.

I have already filed formal complaints with government regulators and intend to explore legal action.

Avoid this bank like the plague. If this is how they treat new customers, imagine what they’ll do with your money.

Accounts closed without warning

I have banked with M&T for 35 years. Until this week, I had 3 personal accounts and 3 business accounts, one of which was a business credit card. A few weeks ago, I reported my business credit card was lost/stolen and was issued a new one (1st time). Then my business checking and savings accounts were closed without notice. This caused several accounts on autopay to go unpaid. I went into the branch to open new accounts. Today, I tried to use my business credit card and discovered that it was also closed. After 37 minutes on the phone with the call center, I still have no answers. For reference, I do not move large sums of money, I have a credit score in the upper 700s, and none of my credit cards have ever been anywhere near the limit. Avoid M&T.

Extremely unprofessional and rude

My husband was out of work for over a year due to cancer. Because of this our income had been lowered, but we still managed to maintain paying our mortgage, although it was late and we were incurring late fees. Something that we know will be tacked onto the end of our loan. However, today a gentleman from a random vehicle walks up to my house and tapes with blue painters tape on my door an unsealed envelope. I opened the envelope and is a piece of paper that’s not even cut properly. It looks like a five-year-old cut it crooked. It says urgent – call your mortgage company immediately. With a phone number. I googled the phone number and it is in fact M&T BANK. I go to customer service and explain how I wasn’t sure if this was a scam, but it seemed very odd that someone in a random car came up and taped what looked to be something involved in a scam to my door. The lady very rudely informed me that we have been late on our mortgage payment without contact them. Which is completely absurd. They had contacted us before, and I spoke with them and told them that we would make the payment as we could (although they may be a bit late) that we did not currently need assistance. Again, I am not in default. Everything is paid up currently although there is late fees. The lady at home owners assistance was extremely rude, and this in my eyes is extremely unprofessional. I have not received not one voicemail for them asking me to call. I also have their app and I did not receive one message asking for me to call, or even a letter sent in the mail. They send someone to tape what looks like a five-year-old cut note to my door. This is extremely unprofessional.

Horrible

Horrible. You can’t do anything without them checking every single transaction and flagging as fraud deposits over certain account of money ($1000 is already a red flag to them). They close and freeze accounts without saying anything.

I had a house fire in October

I had a house fire in October. The insurance paid out partial claim amount to my mortgage company M&T bank. The mortgage company only paid out 20% of the funds to complete repairs. At the time of the fire the house was in Forbearance. Those payment were paid in full in February. Instead of releasing funds being held to complete repairs they have instead attempted to foreclose claiming I am not making an effort to keep the house because I am not living in said house. Every inspection has been rejected by the mortgage company & inspection request closed because the mortgage company will not accept the inspection report at 50% complete. I now am facing living on the street because my insurance adjuster will not approve another extension for current living situation. All that is left is painting, floors, & kitchen/bathroom cabinets. The house was originally gutted to studs & slab. The mortgage company refuses to admit that the house is past 33% complete even after 2 inspections stating so. I have documentation from the inspection company that the mortgage company has rejected their reports & forced them to change the status of repairs. All repairs are now on hold with the contractor due to lack of funds. Flooring & paint is on the premises. Cabinets are at the contractor’s office. I have requested a supervisor from M&T bank to call me to no avail. I am told that no supervisor is on staff when I call. I have requested the resolution team to get involved to no avail. I tried reporting to BBB to now avail. My health is now at risk because I won’t be able to receive my specialty meds for CVID once I am forced out of current living situation. I have lost state aid due to not having my minor child in the home which dropped my family size. I am at risk of losing my insurance now. But yet the Mortgage company still refuses to release funds to complete repairs. I desperately need someone to step in. The mortgage company has also not been on the premises to review the property but yet they reject inspection reports.

such bad service

I am trying to get a HELOC. I send the info and get told it's not there. Finally I get the notice that I'm ready to schedule the closing. But nope. More paperwork. Then my contact was out for the day. Then they can't schedule within the next 4 days because their notary doesn't come in regularly. And leaves at 3. Such poor service. I should have gone with my other bank.

The worst customer service

The worst customer service. I was told by Flagstar that my account was sold to M&T. The cocky doodle dude that answers the phone was quick to say I was transferred. He spoke fast as hell and expected someone to understand. Told me what I couldn't pay over the phone. And then proceeded to speak about everything but what I called for. I hate it here.
