My family flew halfway across the country from a state where marijuana is legal both recreationally and medicinally. One of the reasons we chose to vacation in Wisconsin was because we expected to avoid the constant exposure to marijuana smoke. Unfortunately, that was not the case at Mount Olympus.
We were moved between two different rooms due to a strong and persistent smell of marijuana smoke coming through the ceiling fan vents in the bathroom—an enclosed space no more than six feet on either side. When steam from the shower mixed with the smoke, the smell became even more intense and disgusting.
The front desk moved us only across the hall, which did nothing to solve the issue, although the room itself was slightly better. The second option was a basement-level room less than ten feet from the designated smoking area, which a security guard admitted would likely lead to the same problem.
We contacted the local authorities, but they told us there was nothing they could do—even though marijuana is illegal in Wisconsin and the resort claims to be a “smoke-free, family-friendly environment.”
It’s incredibly disappointing that a resort catering to families allows this type of exposure and does so little to prevent it. This was the last thing we expected to encounter here, and sadly, it tainted what should have been a positive and relaxing family trip.
Due to the nature of our stay here, I doubt we will ever visit Wisconsin or this hotel resort again. And that’s a real shame—because the water park itself has absolutely awesome potential.
