It was not until the birth of my second…
It was not until the birth of my second child where I started to struggle with obesity and high cholesterol. Sitting at 45 years old and recently moving to Copenhagen from the Netherland, with a BMI of 35, fatty Liver, and mild hypertension, I knew I needed help. My doctors recommended I go on a strict diet and start to train regularly. We all know that is always easier said than done. With a packed working schedule and kids to look after, I started researching other options such as the Gastric Bypass and Sleeve surgeries. Looking back at it now, I am glad I was reluctant to undergo those surgeries.
After stumbling upon Nordic Gastric Balloon as a potentially less surgically invasive option for me, I immediately scheduled my consultation with the Nordic Gastric Balloon team. They provided me with all the information on the Gastric Balloon procedure including the small risk of intolerance due to some patients stomachs not being able to tolerate the balloon. What I like about this clinic website is that their website has all the information I need to make a decision, especially when it comes to safety. They actually have the safety section on the top of their front page, and they emphasize that there is a small risk of intolerance in which case the patient might need to get the balloon removed. Keeping in mind that I would maybe lose some muscle mass along with fat, I could not help but admire some of the amazing experiences and weight loss journeys that their pass patients have as seen in the videos on the Nordic Gastric Balloon website. With having a positive attitude, I decided to go for it.
Just like any "surgical procedure", I was full of worry and anxiety going into it even though I knew it was only a 7-minute procedure! I seriously thought they were joking when they said they were finished because Those seven minutes of sedation felt like 30 seconds! After, I was instructed by the dietician on what I can and can't eat and was given detailed protein-based recipes. The first two days were expectedly rough as I was borderline dehydrated and went through some stomach cramps. As a result, the Nordic Gastric Balloon team gave me an IV fluid for the next two days, which seemed to do the trick. Fast forward a few weeks and I was consistently going to do the gym and doing strength training whilst watching what I ate. When I came back after the first month I stepped onto their high-tech scale and saw that I had already lost nine kilograms (three of which was muscle mass)! But as expected, I had gone through relapse on my second month on the weight loss journey due to my decision to try stomaching spicy lamb (even though I knew I was not supposed to eat that). As I embarrassingly called up the clinics office to tell them about my severe vomiting and stomach pain, they told me to fast for the next 12 hours and go under a strict liquid diet, which helped a lot for the pain. With some medication, I felt better within two days.
If I were to say one thing that I think they could do better, it would be in managing their telephone line system. I understand they are very busy but I found myself waiting for a somewhat long time until I got connected with someone that could help. But on the other hand, once they did answer, I was presented with a welcoming Nordic Gastric Balloon team member to help me with what I needed. All in all, my experience so far has been amazing with the Nordic Gastric Balloon and I can only recommend it to anyone looking for a safe, effective, and fun way to meet your weight loss goals.
