Terrible customer service

I booked a mid-size SUV, but was given an old Mitsubishi (2008 model) that was in poor condition. At pickup, I requested an upgrade or a different vehicle, but was told no other options were available.
The car had headlight issues, which we didn’t notice at first because we collected it during the daytime and didn’t drive at night initially. On New Year’s Eve, while going out for a late dinner, we were stopped by the police due to the headlight problem. This clearly shows the vehicle was not properly checked before being rented out.
My back pain became worse during the trip. There was also no reverse camera, which you would normally expect when booking a mid-size SUV.
I understand it was the Christmas holiday season and availability was limited, so I had no real choice. However, this car was not cheap - 5 days at $178.52 per day - which makes the experience even more disappointing.
Please inspect the vehicle carefully before accepting it. Based on this experience, I will never book with NZ Rental Car again.

I had a very frustrating experience with A car rental. First, I returned the vehicle completely full, yet I was charged extra because I didn’t keep my gas receipts. Requiring receipts instead of actually checking the fuel gauge is unreasonable and feels like a money grab. The car was full — that should have been the end of it.

On top of that, before my trip I called well in advance to shorten my reservation by one day, and they flat-out refused to make the change. No flexibility, no attempt to help, just a hard no.

Between the unnecessary fuel charge and the refusal to adjust the reservation, this company showed poor customer service and rigid, unfair policies. I would not rent from them again and strongly recommend others look elsewhere.

Doing the paperwork online was stress free.
Great wee car, only issue an that was me as never driven hybrid car before took me along time to work out the car had started up when I first got into it as couldn't hear it. Otherwise drove really well.

I would thoroughly recommend this business. So much more affordable than the competition and the hybrid car was great. They also picked us up from the airport in the middle of the night and dropped us back at the end. Great car rental at a more reasonable price.

We paid the full rental amount prior for a 21 days trip in the southern part of the South Island NZ. The air cond on full blast sounded like a turbo prop aeroplane taking off. After two days the brakes started to creak and I informed NZrentacar of the problem saying that the car drives OK but the brake is starting to playup. I got a missed call on Sunday 'cos I couldn't hear my phone with the noisy air cond in the car. I responded at night when I got to my accommodation experience but I received no instructions from NZRentacar. I kept them informed of the situation. I spent one week in Wanaka and could have had the brakes look at but their Clause 16 in the insuarance policy specifically said I should not do anything to the car unless permission is given. They did not communicate until I was leaving Wanaka . It was too late because my next stop was Invercargill and I don't get there till late afternoon. Anyway the brake pad fell off the next day near Papatowai. I had to coast about 26 km to Owaka, the nearest place that has a motor mechanic. The car was in the garage for two nights because the part has to come from out of town. That upset my holiday schedule. I picked up the car at 2.00pm the day the repair was finished and left towm. The schedule was to be in Alexandra but there was no way that I could get there. I changed my planned route to get to cover some distance. I could only get as far as Beaumont. The next day I was meant to be in Oamaru. Again I cut travelling time by going through the Ida Valley but I could make as far as Ranfurly. After that we were to get to Geraldine. Again I had to cut short the journey via Kurow and missed that section by stayinbg on SH1 to Geraldine. We got there as per our schedule. The insurance says that they will make amends by crediting the days we were affected. I emailed them and they never respond. They blocked any communication with the magagers/owners. I certainly cannot recommend them. They were good when things are going OK but as soon as there is a problem.They seem to want to hide. I have a full email record of contacts with them,

I chose NZ rent a car based on the price. They were very cheap and I'm a cheapskate.
The collection process at Auckland airport was seamless, with a simple Airport transfer to the nearby car storage facility and a quick license check I was on my way. That's where the good experience ends unfortunately. The car was old (you get what you pay for) and although it didn't feel safe it did do the job of keeping us on the road and getting us from A to B during our two week stay. On returning the car I attempted to refuel it. Unfortunately the only fuel station open at the time was a self service servo and the credit card machine wouldn't accept my Australian credit card. I explained this to NZ rent a car but they went ahead and charged my card with a $50 penalty over and above the cost to refuel. I guess they are within their rights to do that. But two months later I get another charge on my credit card of around $55. When I queried this they said the charge was related to a toll on the vehicle that I hadn't paid. I dispute this, I did pay my tolls that I was aware of during my time in NZ. Is it possible that I might have missed a toll? Sure. Could they have done a simple online check to see if that had happened and just informed me (or any of their clients they don't wish to rip off) so that I could settle the $5 toll? Of course they could. They rather wait two months then pay it themselves and charge me another $50 "admin fee". I don't get asked, they simply take the money out of my account.

Moral of the story: Go with a reputable company instead. You'll pay a couple extra dollars at the beginning but probably end up saving at the end and you'll be driving a newer and safer vehicle.

Just got back from a trip to NZ and can’t fault the rental place we happened across online at Auckland airport. So easy and easy going. Cheapest by far that’s why we went with them, in fact I cancelled the first mob as were twice the price. We even got back late bc of unexpected traffic, and they shuttled us to our airport hotel free of charge. Super nice ladies.

This review relates to their Nelson Airport NZ branch. I have rented here regularly for over 6 years. Clean, sound, cars (both near-new and budget) at the best airport prices. A good experience each time.
