Impartiality obviously means something else with the Ombudsman.

Shame there is no option for zero stars as it's what i would give them.Take this review as Zero stars anyway as they don't even deserve one.

Absolute farce of a service.Impartiality is a word you cannot link with this organisation as they are geared up to side with the local authority regardless of any corresponding evidence, and we had lots!

Very unfair and total waste of Government resources.Close it down or emotional staff who look at both sides of the coin not just one as my 'caseworker' did.Won't name her but I could tell from the get go what she was going to do an lo and behold she did exactly that.

If anybody is thinking of contacting these people for help, dont waste your time.If you have other options use them as contacting these won't get you anywhere.

They're useless.

The Ombudsman purely window dressing

It’s a shame, but it’s true - the Ombudsman office in Ireland is a purely ‘window dressing’. They’re polite, but ineffective. They weren’t willing to hold the Council accountable. The Ombudsman failed to provide the public with the opportunity to hold those responsible accountable and remedy the injustice.

A Customer Service Complaint remained unanswered.

Useless

Useless, don’t do what they are supposed to do , ignoring concerns, don’t answer the phone and keep pushing back even with evidence

“A useless service that ignores real evidence and protects the Council, not citizens”

My personal experience with this organization showed one thing: you cannot expect real help from them. For more than six months, I submitted dozens of pages of documents, medical certificates (asthma, severe allergies, autism diagnosis), as well as photos, videos, and audio recordings showing the constant noise and traffic around our home. We live near the Institute of Technology in Carlow, where the stream of students and cars turns the area into a source of endless noise and daily sensory overload for children.

However, all of this evidence was ignored. The organization did not come to the site, did not order independent assessments, and did not even conduct basic checks. Their reply was simply a repetition of the County Council’s words that the area is supposedly “quiet and calm.” Maybe that was true many years ago, but today the situation is completely different.

In my view, the work of this body is not about protecting citizens but about formally checking “procedures.” They collect complaints, issue stock responses like “we reviewed,” “procedures were followed,” and leave it at that. Independence is not visible in their actions. In practice, it feels like they simply endorse the Council’s official positions instead of genuinely evaluating the evidence provided by people.

For a family with disabled children, this becomes a tragedy. All the efforts, documents, and evidence end up reduced to one dry phrase: “circumstances have not changed.” This feels like a mockery of a real and serious situation.

In my experience, if you are expecting fairness and support, be prepared for disappointment. Your evidence may be ignored, and your complaint may be reduced to a formal rejection. This organization does not fulfill the function it was created for — protecting vulnerable citizens.

And the most telling sign — their rating on Trustpilot. 2.1 out of 5. That is not just low; it reflects the complete lack of trust from people. Positive reviews are almost nonexistent, and most say the same thing I do: useless, formalistic, and offering no real help.
