Disappointed with Paddle Quality and Customer Support Experience

As a professional kayak school, safety and reliable equipment are essential to our operations. We recently purchased four paddles from OS and unfortunately encountered a significant issue: each paddle had a different blade angle, making them inconsistent and unsuitable for instructional use.

After lining up all four paddles, it became clear that the blade angles varied noticeably from one to another. The white paddle we previously owned had the correct offset (approx. 75 degrees), but the new yellow paddle was significantly misaligned, and the remaining three were off to varying degrees as well. These inconsistencies are not a matter of opinion—they’re clearly visible and measurable. For paddles to function correctly and safely, uniformity is critical. These did not meet that standard. we sent the company a number pf videos demonstrating this.

We contacted OS to report the issue and were initially advised to drill out the rivets and adjust the paddles ourselves. As professionals, we felt this was not a safe or acceptable solution. Altering the paddles would likely void any warranty and could compromise safety, particularly in a teaching environment.

Over the course of three weeks, we engaged in several rounds of communication, during which the company stood by the assertion that the paddles were acceptable, citing input from a rowing instructor. As this equipment is intended for kayaking, not rowing, we felt this feedback was not applicable. Eventually, a refund was offered, but only if we returned the paddles at our own cost. Given the size of the paddles and our location, this would be expensive and burdensome.

According to Irish consumer law (Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980), sellers are responsible for return shipping costs when products are faulty or unfit for purpose. We believe this situation clearly qualifies under those terms.

In the meantime, we’ve had to source new paddles elsewhere to continue operating safely and professionally. We are still awaiting a full resolution and refund.

We believe that raising product quality and safety concerns should be met with accountability and a customer-focused approach. In our experience, that was not the case here.

We encourage prospective buyers to evaluate this feedback and consider their options carefully.

I was having trouble ordering a fuel tank & lead, etc online. I contacted O'Sullivan's Marine directly by phone and spoke to a most helpful assistant, DJ. Although it was approx 4.30pm, he checked that it was in stock, called me back to confirm and organise delivery. It arrived at my home at 9.30am the next morning, delivered free!!!! I was genuinely blown away with the service I received and will be using O'Sullivan's & DJ for any marine purchases in the future. Well done DJ, thanks again.

Fantastic service

Item arrived and in perfect order and in very good time. Only problem was it was sent to the ‘billing address’ in Cork. But wanted it to be delivered to the delivery address in Waterville, Co Kerry. Luckily my son collected the package in Cork and brought it down.
