Amazing dyslexia tutor ☺️

Owl Tutors did a fantastic job placing one of their specialist tutors, Frankie, with us to work with our 8 year old son.

Our son has dyslexia and we wanted to find a specialist dyslexia tutor to provide him with support to supplement his learning at school. We had previously worked with a tutor who wasn’t a specialist in SEN or dyslexia, but who lived within driving distance of our home, which meant the sessions could be face-to-face. When this tutor’s situation changed and we needed to find an alternative, we spoke to Lawrence, from Owl Tutors and asked for his advice.

Lawrence pointed out that whilst lots of families default to asking for a tutor who can work their children in person, this naturally limits, due to their geographical location, the amount of relevant tutors that can be considered. Lawrence suggested we think about trying a tutor who delivers their lessons virtually, as this would increase the pool of tutors that we could choose from and, in our case, provide us with the option of accessing a tutor who specialised in dyslexia, but who didn’t live close enough to meet in person.

We were initially sceptical about virtual lessons - we were concerned that a tutor would struggle to make a meaningful connection with their student and that, without an adult physically in the room, the student would easily get distracted and that the tutor, by simply being a face on a computer screen, would be unable to intervene to control the lesson and deliver it effectively.

Lawrence listened to our concerns and explained that the tutors that work through Owl Tutors are experienced at delivering virtual lessons in a way that engages their students and that the feedback from the families that he has placed virtual tutors with is that they usually find it works well.

Furthermore, having access to the most relevant tutor for the needs of the individual child, rather than access to a tutor who may live within commuting distance, but who isn’t as relevant a fit in terms of their educational specialism (NB this could be for dyslexia, but is just as relevant if you are looking for specialist in a given age grade, subject or examination level) is also a key consideration.

Lawrence introduced us to Frankie, one of his tutors, who is an experienced teacher and an expert in dyslexia (but who does not live anywhere near us), and recommended we speak to her and then try a couple of virtual sessions to see if there was a good fit with her and our son and to see whether a virtual lesson arrangement was going to work.

Prior to the first lesson, I had an introductory call with Frankie, where I provided her with the relevant background on my son, his experience with education to date and our hopes for what we wanted to get out of him working with her. Frankie talked me through her experience as a teacher and how she worked with her tutoring students. This was a really helpful way to start the working relationship and is something I would recommend all parents do before starting with a new tutor.

It quickly became clear after the first few lessons that Frankie was an absolute star and exactly what we had hoped we would find in a tutor. She is absolutely an expert in dyslexia and delivers well-planned, engaging lessons that build incrementally to help fill the gaps in his learning that have unfortunately developed in his learning during the first few years at school. Neither my wife nor I have dyslexia or experience with how to manage it, but Frankie has provided us with advice on how best to support our son. She has a warm and bubbly personality and genuinely cares about our son’s success. Frankie has built an excellent relationship with our son and our initial concerns about the effectiveness of virtual lessons passed quickly after we saw the impact she was making, after only the first couple of lessons. Our son remains engaged throughout the sessions (we typically do two a week - one for 45 minutes and one for 30 minutes - any longer than that is a struggle on any activity!!) and he looks forward to his time with Frankie every week. We now have the convenience of tutoring at home, but with benefit of the tutoring being delivered by a specific tutor who can meet the specific needs of our son.

I can’t recommend Lawrence, Frankie or Owl Tutors highly enough - and for any parents unsure about virtual tutoring, I would echo Lawrence’s advice above: start by focusing on finding the best available tutor who can deliver what your child needs (this is the magic that Owl Tutors brings) and if that tutor happens to live around the corner from you then great, but if not, then don’t be afraid to give virtual lessons a go - we did and we are so happy with how it has turned out.

Very professional tutoring company…

Very professional tutoring company where you feel respected, valued and listened to. They organise all the admin stuff,so that tutors can focus on high quality tutoring and do not need to worry about chasing parents for missed lessons and payments. As an experienced mathematics teacher, I feel this is the best company to work for and I thoroughly enjoy teaching all of my students. Owls also offer training for particular specialist areas, such as dislexia and 11 plus.
I would highly recommend Owl tutors to both parents and tutors for their professional approach, expertise and excellent support.

Excellent pool of specialist tutors

We used Owl for both German (Ben) and Maths (Alan) prior to our sons IB Diploma exams as he was really struggling with both of these subjects. We found Owl to be excellent excellent with both communication and the choice of a pool of specialist tutors. Significant strides were made in each subject during the period of tutoring to hopefully help our son reach his potential.

Excellent Job Satisfaction!

I have worked with Owl Tutor as a Tutor for 5 years and have really enjoyed it! There is a wide range of students to work with and plentiful opportunities to find work. Owl Tutors also actively supports tutors in their professional growth. Beyond teaching, there are opportunities to write blogs, create subject materials and exam-style papers and develop specialised expertise, allowing tutors to enhance their profile and build their personal brand. It is refreshing to see that Owl Tutors is an agency that encourages growth rather than restricts it. Highly recommended for qualified teachers looking for agency work.

Owl Tutors from a tutor's perspective

I have worked with Owl Tutors for 9 years now. They have always provided an excellent service and provided consistent work over this period for me as a tutor. Sometimes demand is too high and other times not quite enough but that’s to be expected. The team are always on hand to support as needed and when my earnings and work load dropped quite significantly for the first time at the start of this academic year they were quick to offer reassurance and useful suggestions to help me get noticed more by prospective parents (as well as pushing me for more roles through their personal recommendations which was massively appreciated). Needless to say I do feel valued. There have also been opportunities over the years to boost income by writing exam papers or articles for the website and, although I’ve never participated, training opportunities for tutors in various fields which is great to see. Various changes have been incorporated over the years; many of which I have seen the benefit. The only slight issue (but I understand it from the business perspective) is the constant need to apply for various roles (a lot of which prove unsuccessful); this was never the case earlier on and can become quite time consuming.

Maths and physics GCSE tutoring

As a returning user of Owl Tutors, they did a good job again of matching what our daughter needed with tutor. We were looking for support for GCSE maths, further maths and physics for someone who can need help with confidence etc. Alan helped a lot with this and was very responsive to requests from parents and to picking up on what was needed during the session. The exams went well and the tutoring definitely helped.

The perfect balance between…

The perfect balance between professionalism and approachability. The quality and level of the tutoring were brilliant. Our tutor ensured that the lessons were pitched perfectly to stretch but also built confidence. We had a much less anxious 11+ preparation than anticipated and our son said he actually enjoyed it. The fact he is thriving at school is a testament to the support given. Thank-you!
