Inflated pricing for sub-standard service

Firstly: I don't generally put one star reviews but on this occasion, I regretfully had to.

I have used Plum Trade Services in the past. I have paid about $290 to get a capacitor replaced. The person who did the job had to come a second time round to get the part. The part costed an extra ~$60. This was handled professionally despite it being in the higher price bracket I was expecting to pay.

On a second occasion, first I was charged ~$350 to come look at a fault. I had two people this time come up my roof which felt unnecessary vs the one person last time. They scribbled with permanent on my wood without asking and after some time discovered a faulty transformer. I found one of the screws missing.

They claimed that they had to contact the supplier to determine the part price. Despite knowing I was experiencing financial distress they claimed a step down transformer will cost an approximate extra $550. I felt this was a grossly inflated price so I asked for a receipt showing the part from the supplier and it's cost. I felt gaslighted here when they claimed that the prices are internal prices. How is it that they had to then get the prices from the supplier? This felt more like them pretending they even had to reach a supplier because the part was a common part and there was only one transformer common to all bonaire heating units. In conflict with their previous claims, such a device should have been available on first visit given the nature of the circumstance.

By the time they had to come back to me with a still unacceptable discounted negotiation of a ~$100 cheaper price, I had already done my research, found a part, got it delivered and installed for just $45. I was happy to pay them up to $400 to replace a $45 device but charging me $1000 is unjustifiable especially when they knew my circumstances at the time.

To clarify, the component replaced previously was a capacitor, which differs from the transformer later identified as faulty. Transformers are not standard stock items and require confirmation of availability and pricing with our supplier. The initial attendance fee covered diagnostic time, which was discussed at the time of booking, with any required parts quoted separately once identified.

Our pricing reflects not only the part itself, but also labour, warranty, supplier guarantees, and compliance requirements. While we understand that alternative solutions can sometimes be sourced independently at a lower cost, the pricing we provided was based on our standard business processes and responsibilities. We did attempt to assist by offering a discounted price once your concerns were raised.

We regret that this situation occurred during a difficult financial period for you and that the experience left you feeling dissatisfied. Your feedback has been shared internally so we can continue to improve our communication and customer experience.

Very fair and reasonable to deal with.

I’ve been a customer of Plum for many years now and I trust them to look after my cooling and central heating system. I rang them to check my cooling system to make sure that everything is working fine after a mini tornado hit our suburb. I was quoted a standard price for the job. When Aiden, their technician, came over to test it, he verified that everything is working well and the unit is secured. I ended up paying just half the price that was originally quoted.

Importance of serving.

Request was for a standard service, which was done. As the unit is just over a year, the gentleman (forgot his name)
Told me as it is and showed me photos, which I appreciated as the installation unfortunately was not done by Plum. It seems that despite dealing directly with Bonair to replace my existing unit. They out source the installation

Major service & no heater for 10 days

I paid $495 for a Major Service on my gas ducted heater. Everything seemed fine on the day, but the very next morning the heater faulted and stopped working.

After some back and forth, it took 10 days for a technician to return. They found a faulty part, which I then had to pay an additional $120 to replace.

I’m frustrated and disappointed. If the heater was serviced properly, why did it stop working immediately after? What exactly did I pay $495 for, if it didn’t identify or prevent this fault?

I won’t be using your services again and will be sharing this experience.

After reviewing your case with our team, we’d like to clarify the sequence of events and the steps we took to support you. After Joshua completed a major service on 29/05/25, your unit was tested and found to be working without any issues. When you reported intermittent operation on 03/06/25, we promptly worked to arrange a follow-up visit. Although there was a short delay as we tried to reach you, we booked your appointment for the next available time after the public holiday.

On 10/06/25, our technician Jacob diagnosed a faulty pressure switch—a component that was functioning at the time of the original service and, unfortunately, is not possible to proactively test when the unit is operating normally. We understand how frustrating it can be when a fault occurs so soon after a service, and we want to assure you that this was a genuine coincidence rather than an oversight.

To assist, we waived the standard $150 call-out fee and significantly discounted the pressure switch replacement from $200 to $120 as a gesture of goodwill.

Our goal is to treat every customer fairly and ensure your experience with us is positive. We hope this explanation clarifies the situation. If you’d like to discuss your concerns further, please don’t hesitate to contact us directly—we are always here to help.
