The Building Project

We were recommended to use PorthouseDean by our building designer. And the choice was well rewarded. PD went above & beyond our expectations, as they added “Hi-spec” to the specifications, and the project (so far) has been successful.

They gave professional advice which saved money, easy to understand documentation in an appropriate time frame and quickly revised plan after making a structural change . Totally satisfied with result and cost.
Would highly recommend and use again without doubt.

High Quality Value Engineering / Design

I run The Building Guidance Partnership - helping homeowners manage their home projects.

For my own home I used Chris Porthouse and his amazing team. It was a major project ... approximately 82 steel sections involved.

High quality value engineering / design. A personal service. I would have no hesitation in recommending them.

Absolutely delighted.

Excellent Online Structural Engineering Service

I decided to use PorthouseDean since I had architectural plans drawn up from an online company and so it was logical to use PorthouseDean. One is always a little apprehensive about using an on-line structural engineer service rather than seeing someone face to face, but I should not have worried. The side extension is now built and the Building Inspector has approved all the structural work.

I had to made two changes to the architectural plans while the single storey side extension was being built; the roof pitch and the position of a steel beam. This resulted in me having to contact Akhil on numerous occasions with emails full of changes and questions. He was able to sort them all out with patience and efficiency. He responded quickly so I could get back to the builder with instructions on how to move the build forward and send the new information to Building Control for their records.

I would happily use PorthouseDean again, but since I am in my mid-seventies it is probably unlikely but I would recommend them since I thought they were reasonable priced and they always replied quick, efficient and with patience.

Good service overall

Good communication, prompt delivery with an option of a quicker delivery if preferred. The design appears to be well thought through.

Would have been better if my request was turned around quicker. My build was on hold for 2 weeks waiting for calculations.

Hi Lee, thanks for your review. I'm sorry your project was held up.

It looks as though the engineer working on your project produced a quote for you but then didn't press send on the email. To make up for it their mistake they offered you our priority service (normally 50% extra) for free, but perhaps didn't manage it sufficiently to get the information back to you in the circa 3 working days estimated in the priority service (although it was delivered quicker, at just over 4 working days, than it would have been with the standard service you paid for (6.5 working days)).

One mitigating factor is that it looks as though further information was needed from you mid-project which may have delayed things a little.

This is an unusual case as the engineer has taken it upon themselves as a gesture of goodwill to offer you a free upgrade, which requires some manual service alterations and doesn't happen very often. I have spoken to them about the importance of ensuring that this is managed properly in future, so hopefully this won't happen again.

Please accept our apologies, and we wish you the best of luck with your project.

Regards, Sam Dean

I recommend them

I was referred to them by the building control designers. I found them responsive and helpful. The engineering came through quickly for building control and as I needed them to get contractors quotes. There is an option for amendment and clarification by builders which I have not yet needed to use but I am guessing that it will come and be tested.
Fair and reasonable price for the excellent service.
