I've tried many times to find a suitable resource to help me learn Portuguese and I'm delighted that I discovered Portuguese with Carla! It's very well structured, supportive and makes learning fun.

I signed up to the wonderful Portuguese with Carla just over a week ago and it's exactly what I was looking for. I knew my self-taught Brazilian Portuguese might not be so well understood for my forthcoming trip to The Azores (and any future trips to Portugal), and wanted to learn the correct pronunciation and differences, and real language of European Portuguese, not just that of limited Brazilian CD courses. I also want to progress in the language that I've come to really love. The website has so much excellent content (and more added all the time), including from the podcasts that they were doing, and it's very immersive. Although I have some prior knowledge, starting with the Pre-Journey chapters has already taught me so much and been the right thing to do. As a very visual person I love Carla and Marlon's approach with the video sequences, which are fun and entertaining; their clear explanations teach you so much, and the chemistry between them and calmness makes learning a joy; it's like they are in the room with you. There is no pressure, or fear of getting things wrong, just gentle encouragement and you just want to learn. I haven't yet joined in on one of the live speaking sessions with a native speaker but plan to in due course. Muito obrigada Carla and Marlon, the course is amazing and makes me wonder why all language courses aren't like this!

Have just completed one chapter of The Journey. Carla and Marlon are great to listen to and watch. They talk to the camera like they are talking to me. Their acting in the video clips seems very natural, not like they are acting at all. The explanations of how to pronounce letters and words, and shadowing the phrases, has been really helpful as Portuguese pronunciation is nothing like English. I have very much enjoyed this chapter and looking forward to the next.

Learning a new language is not really my thing. I am the type who gets bored and loses focus very quickly. I moved to Portugal recently and have been really struggling getting my head around the language. I finally came across Portuguese with Carla and decided to give it a try. I must say that in just two weeks I am starting to understand when I hear others speak Portuguese. I now feel I am on the right track.

I have only just begun the course but I can already appreciate its quality, structure and effectiveness. It is easy and fun to engage with. I am looking forward to go on this journey.

Fantastic self-paced course in European Portuguese. I have finished 3 out of 51 chapters so far and love it. Chapter 1 seems to be more challenging and time consuming to complete.

Fantastic website. Very well thought out, structured programme to learn European Portuguese. Thorough, engaging, fun. Easy to stay motivated. The chemistry between Carla and Marlon is an important part of the appeal, but the depth of thought and detail of the Journey is what makes this stand out as a language learning site. It is hard to imagine anything better.

My partner and I just returned from our second trip to Portugal. Even though we are still at the start of the program, we were able to speak and understand quite a bit more Portuguese than on our first trip! It was exciting to see the progress and are looking forward to completing the entire Journey. It's an amazing platform and program!

Well organised, well- executed lessons using real pace of communication and real-life scenarios. Useful from the first moment; lots of repetition and useful reviews to make sure we are learning and using the language from the start.

Muito, muito bom! The entire program is stellar. The amount of work they’ve put into developing this program is mind-boggling, honestly. I feel lucky to have found it — and lucky to be starting after they’ve been developing the program over a number of years. The Journey itself is excellent, but they have so many ancillary tools to help us learn, too. They’ve built in a vocabulary learning tool that is great. They have an AI ChatBot to be able to write to it in Portuguese — and it corrects you kindly! The live practice sessions are invaluable, honestly. And they’ve put together a list of other resources to help with the immersion aspect of learning a language.

I’ve only been using it for about three weeks but I am learning so much — comprehension and speaking. And European Portuguese is not easy with the pronunciation being quite different from how it looks on the page.

Also — there are real people behind this program. A team of them. If you need to ask the team a question, it doesn’t feel like a black box.

I cannot recommend the Portuguese with Carla program highly enough!

I started Portuguese with Carla in January 2025 and I am very happy with how much my oral comprehension has improved. I was able to string together some sentences before starting this program, but I struggled with comprehension. I am very pleased with their content, which is quite different than another program I had previously used. I would recommend this program to anyone who wants to learn European Portuguese.

I am a true beginner with virtually no previous knowledge of Portuguese (other than a few basic words, and I have visited Portugal a half dozen times). I started Portuguese with Carla last week, and have (so far) only gone through 2 beginner (pre-journey) lessons. However, I can already tell that I am hooked. Carla and Marlon are so likable and relaxed in their teaching style. The lesson plans combine just the right amount of explanation, listening and speaking and are very challenging but not overly intimidating. They strike the perfect balance.

The Journey with Portuguese with Carla is an awesome learning tool. It is creative, interesting and innovative. It inspires me to learn through diverse modes of lesson organization and delivery. I highly recommend to anyone wanting to learn Portuguese. It is easy to use in the comfort of your own environment and timing. The staff is very responsive with any questions as well.

I am so glad that found Portuguese with Carla. I listened to the podcast for several months before subscribing to The Journey and Live Practice. There is no better resource for learning European Portuguese. Their techniques are science-backed and natural, so you retain what you learn. And it's fun! The Live Practice sessions give you the opportunity to interact with others including a native speaker, so you get to practice what you learn while building your confidence and comfort levels. Most importantly, you actually learn European Portuguese as it is used in every day life, and you train your ear to comprehend the spoken word. I fully intend to renew my subscription, and I highly recommend them to others.

I am completely impressed with Carla and Marlon Sabala's The Journey tutorial. It's a great programme, interactive and fun, and you definitely won't get bored. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in European Portuguese.

I have been learning Portuguese on Portuguese with Carla for a few weeks now having spent a fair amount of time learning the language on another online site. In these few weeks I feel I have made very rapid progress in all sorts of ways but especially in understanding and speaking European Portuguese. The lessons are well planned and delivered with excellent explanations. There are also very clear learning outcomes. I only wish I had started it sooner.
