They have misleading ads on certain sites that require a login/registration. Sometimes the ad is a banner that says "Continue" or "Start" with a play or an arrow, misleading the user to tap on it. Very cleverly, the ad is between the signup form and the top of the page, and to a non-experienced user, specially a boomer, will tap it. After that, there's a registration page and it asks for the cc info, which my mom entered. She was trying to signup to a taxi hailing app, mind you. Luckily we managed to cancel the subscription before the actual billing cycle started. It's all engineered to make you think you didn't get any charge, just $1 temporary hold, and after 2 days of "trial" the real $19.99/mo begins. Most people won't see it and this kind of businesses count on it: no notification, no reminders, no welcome e-mails or anything; nothing that can make you think you're subscribed to anything. This company is located, apparently in Romania. Didn't check. And they say that the subscription cancellation is easy, and it's not. They make you call a US number, or, as in our case, chat with somebody that promptly canceled everything. This business works like this: they mislead you into entering your cc info, after 3 days they actually start billing you and, if you manage to see it on your statement, and contact them, they'll refund you on the spot no questions asked. That way you won't complain and without a fuss, the problem is solved. And everyone else that forgot about it or didn't realize, gets billed silently every month until one day you realize how it works. Shameful.
