We are obviously disappointed that you believe you had a poor experience with our product but are also very concerned by the contents of this review. We were in touch directly to query your experience. We are a regulated UK food manufacturer (The Foods Standards Agency and SALSA). We obviously take any claims about food safety extremely seriously as would these agencies. You were not able though to substantiate these claims which are currently being treated as libellous. As to your assertions with regards a refund. We explained on a number of occasions that as you bought through Amazon, you needed to claim the refund through Amazon. If you buy something in a shop (which Amazon is) you go back to the shop for the refund not the manufacturer. The money sits in the shop’s account. And just to make very clear, contrary to your claims about not getting a refund, Amazon did refund you. Amazon’s policy, as most people know, is to always offer a refund.

We of course were extremely disappointed by the service you received from us which was due to an error in your original order and a very unfortunate delay in rectifying. We did of course send you the correct order as well as provide you a full refund for the whole order as an apology. We conveyed that we would provide you with the refund and fresh product before this review was posted.
We are a small family business so ensuring our customers receive the highest quality biltong and jerky and excellent customer service is of paramount importance to us. The lack of negative reviews on line despite the many thousands of deliveries we have made over the years is hopefully testament to all our efforts. In this instance however we fell short of our high expectations and apologies.

Dear Mr Soper

We do everything we can to resolve any issues our customers have. The fact that there are virtually no disparaging reviews on our business on any website despite the years we have been operating and the hundreds of orders we have dealt with is, we think, testament to the time and effort we put into customer service and the quality of our products.

We have fully refunded you and said we would on May 5th so we are not sure what you are referring to in your review. We did this despite questioning whether it was reasonable to expect any food business to provide a refund on opened packaging because, to quote you, “you did not enjoy it”.

You ordered 2 boxes containing bags of biltong and opened both of them rendering the contents unsellable.

You claimed that you had bought the biltong because we had said biltong was better than jerky. This is not true. The only reference to Jerky on our whole website is;

“Jerky originated in North and South America and is also a process for preserving meat. The main difference though between Biltong and Jerky is that biltong is air-dried whereas Jerky is cooked or dehydrated”

We highlighted we had never had a request of this nature before and reasonably asked if you would expect to take a variety multipack of crisps back to Tesco’s for a refund because you “didn’t enjoy” one of the flavours? Or tell Ocado to pick up what was left of a variety cereal pack because you didn’t like the taste? For reference these supermarkets would only refund groceries that are defective.

We were though keen to resolve the issue and offered you a 50% refund on top of the 15% discount you had already received (you also benefitted from a sales price) as we assumed it was reasonable to expect you to accept some responsibility for ordering (and opening both boxes). You though quibbled about this and postage costs.

At which point (May 5th) we said we will refund you the cost of the biltong.

We have not been rude in our replies and would be very happy to share the full correspondence for readers to judge.

We are very proud of the business we have built and know a large part of its success is due to the effort we put into making sure our customers are happy. We are sorry that you have felt it necessary to write this review, but we are confident we have been very reasonable in trying to deal with a request that any food supplier (including the major retailers) would find problematic.

We take great pride in crafting it in the traditional way using only the highest quality ingredients and beef from farms that operate to the highest ethical and sustainable standards. Our success has been built on crafting great tasting biltong and good customer service. We were obviously disappointed we had made a mistake with the delivery of your order but worked very hard to rectify the issue as soon as possible. We are very happy you thought the biltong was good.
