Avoid at all costs

A plumber arrived in response to a call to Charles Plumbing Services requesting an emergency plumber. We had a leak behind the upstairs toilet which was repaired, and the mains tap also needed to be replaced, and we were charged £4,320 for 4 hours work. We were then told it needed paying immediately using a bank transfer or else the plumber would not leave our house. It was very stressful as my husband was ill at the time. They have claimed we authorised the work at this price but there is no way we would have authorised work at this price. They have scammed us and should not be allowed to practice. An independent plumber advised the job should have cost £280. Nobody should ever use this plumber. It is very likely he had no plumbing qualifications at all.

Exorbitant prices and misleading marketing

I called what I thought was an independent plumber with good Google reviews for an emergency call out to a leak in the bathroom £58 call out fee - fair enough.

Two guys came and they said it would probably take a lot of work to find the leak - quoted £375 to search for the leak - probably need to remove the bath to get to it they said. As I was not at the property (housemate was there) reluctantly agreed thinking it must be serious. They said they would then quote for any work once the leak was found.

They clearly knew that the leak was actually the sink trap, and they spent 15 minutes replacing this with a new trap (£30 quid from BnQ). Then created an invoice for another £300. So in all, £675 to change a sink trap!

Whilst I'm happy to pay extra for the emergency call out, I feel this charge is extortionate and I only paid it as my housemate felt intimidated by the two guys demanding to be paid. The invoice was from this company - which has no reviews, was set up in August 2026 and was not the local plumber I thought I was getting. (Their website claims they have been in business for 25 years - but the director is listed as born in 1990)

I will not be using them again and will be putting a claim in under the Consumer Rights Act as I want to see them justify this un-agreed price for less than an hour's work. I will also be reporting to Trading standards as their practices are misleading.
