I had contacted Remer plumbing and…
I had contacted Remer plumbing and heating, because my furnace was acting up.
We suspected that the unit needed a good cleaning judging on the the appearance of it and the way the way that it was acting.
When I contacted Remers the woman on the phone told me that the service call would be $132.00, and that she needed a credit card number before she could send the technician out. I supplied a card number, and the technician came out the next day.
The technician walked into my house and standing next to the furnace, said "I am going to tell you something that you're not going to like."
He claimed that the furnace was too old and that they couldn't even get parts to repair it anymore.
He went on to claim that the furnace was beyond even servicing. And the best course of action was to replace the whole system.
He said that He could take the specs and have someone in the office get back to me with a quote to replace the unit.
Remer's office e-mailed me a proposal of $7300.00, to take out the old furnace and to replace the whole system.
Upon receiving the proposal, we decided to get a second opinion on if we even needed to replace the furnace.
We contacted different company, and they came out and decided that the furnace only needed a good cleaning.
We were talking as they went about the cleaning of the unit and the exhaust flue.
I mentioned what the tech from Remers had said. The technician doing the cleaning responded that what the other tech had said was not true. In fact the expansion tank had clearly been replaced. And the gas control module appeared to have been replaced also.
The clearing didn't fully solve the issue. The true problem was a birds nest and/or other debris in the the chimney. Once we got that cleaned out the furnace was up and running better than it had been in a long time.
But Remer Plumbing and Heating were not totally out of the picture yet.
On top of the $132.00 that I never asked for back, for their initial 10 minute service call.
They sent me another invoice for around $15.00,
$8.00+ for mileage, and a $6.00 charge with no explanation.
I called them, and they said that said that they didn't want to fight about the charge and the would waive it.
I am currently debating contesting the credit card charges for the $132.00 initial service call.
Because there was no actual service preformed.
And the technician appeared to be more intent on selling a new furnace then do what they had been contracted to do.
That was to come clean the furnace.
