frustrating experience with Shaw (now Rogers)

I want to share my incredibly frustrating experience with Shaw (now Rogers) as a cautionary tale for everyone, especially small business owners and sole proprietors in Canada. I have been a loyal, faithful customer with them for over 7-8 years, always paying on time. However, the way they treat long-term customers who need to relocate is utterly heartless.
How I was misled by their Sales Rep:

Years ago, I wanted to get one internet line for my small spa business, and a standard residential internet line for my home. The sales representative pushed and misled me, saying, "If you sign up for both under a Small Business account, I can give you a special bundle promotion." Trusting them, I agreed.

The reality? My home internet was just a single standard modem setup. I was the sole occupant, used it exactly like a regular residential line, and never used any business features. Yet, I was forced to pay $88/month (way higher than today's residential rates of $50 or less). On top of that, they snuck a business landline into my account that I have never hooked up or used since day one, as I only use my personal mobile.

The Customer Service Nightmare:

October last year: I sold my spa business and successfully transferred that specific business line to the new owner. No issues there.

May this year (2026): I permanently relocated back to Thailand and rented out my home. The new tenants already have their own internet provider, so I reached out to Rogers/Shaw to cancel my remaining home line.

The Treatment: Trying to contact them from abroad has been a complete nightmare. I called international long-distance and waited on the line for nearly an hour, only for the agent to abruptly hang up on me. I then tried their Live Chat, but the chat agent refused to help, stating that cancellations can "only be done over the phone." So, I was forced to call again, staring at another hour of waiting on hold.

The Outrageous Penalty: When I finally got through, they informed me that my contract locks me in until October 2028, and to cancel now, I must pay an early cancellation fee of over $1,000+! ($845 for the internet and $188 for the unused phone line).

They refuse to cooperate, completely ignoring the fact that I am a single individual who has left the country. They told me my only options are to pay the $1,000+ penalty or "find someone else to take over my contract"—which is impossible since I am already living in Thailand.

An Important Warning Regarding the New CRTC Rules:

As many of you know, the CRTC introduced a new regulation effective June 12, 2026, which prohibits early cancellation fees for residential internet and mobile plans to give consumers freedom.

However, because Rogers/Shaw's agent trickily put my home internet under a "Small Business" designation from the start, they are now exploiting this loophole to bypass the new consumer protection laws and squeeze a massive penalty out of an expat who can no longer even use the service.

I am currently filing an official dispute with the CCTS (ccts-cprst.ca) to fight this unfair charge and terrible customer service.

Please be very careful when sales reps offer you "business promos" for your household needs. Their business contracts are ruthless, and their customer service is designed to trap you.

⚠️ BEWARE OF ROGERS/SHAW BUSINESS CONTRACT TRAPS: A painful lesson for small business owners and loyal customers of 8 years. ⚠️

Poor customers service!

Poor customer service!! Treating long termed loyal customer of 24 years as unvalued customer after unexpected long distance charged. Then, shamelessly asking to add on more services.
Are you kidding?
Before you signed on with Rogers, read the reviews. Anyone else has to be better!

Not good customer service!

I never write a bad review and I try not to but with my experience with rogers are one of the worst. I called June 11 to get my service canceled for June 21. 10 days early! just so I don't have to inconvenience myself when I'm leaving. I was told waybill will be provided 48 hours before the cancelation day. I even contacted them June 15, just to remind them. June 20, I still haven't received the waybill. I contacted them via chat, the person that I was chatting with, was so dry and no care at all. I was asked questions and I just found out that she was just creating the waybill and that I'm gonna need to wait another 24-48 hours which I can't because I'm leaving. She asked me if there is a store near me. There's a store in town but that's the reason why I did it online, I don't have a car to go there and there's no bus that I can take to go to town. I told her my situation and she told me to call customer service care instead! I did call customer service and got the same answer. I asked what's gonna happen if I can't return it because of their negligence, I was told that I'm still gonna get charge for not returning the equipment! I want to return the equipment that's why I called 10 days early! The guy I was talking to was like "It's not your fault and also not our fault", no accountability at all.

Rogers is a REALLY BAD company

Wow, how can you be any worse than Rogers. When you try to cancel, they keep giving you a better offer to trap you. But they did not come through with the offer and I called several times. Each time they said they would do it, but they did not. I am never going with them again.

Outages tool is a joke so is their customer service

Their outage tool shows no outages for my father's retirement home where over 200 elderly live. Yet the service has been down (all services, internet/wifi, TV etc). Yet Rogers' chat refuses to give me, a family member, ANY SERVICE UPDATE, because they say I cannot give them the account number, even though they know full well the account number at the address I gave them. This is disgusting customer service. Who cares for the elderly - their family.

Absolutely awful experience

Absolutely awful experience. Rogers started billing me before I even received my SIM card. Their customer service is unresponsive, promises are routinely broken, and it took three months to get connected with a specialist who couldn't resolve the issue and provided no meaningful answers.
This has been one of the most frustrating customer service experiences I've ever had. I would not recommend Rogers to anyone. Save yourself the time, money, and stress and look elsewhere.

I am very disappointed with Rogers

I am very disappointed with Rogers. I am on ODSP and have been part of a program that allowed me to have an affordable phone plan for $25 a month. When my phone screen cracked, I contacted Rogers hoping to upgrade to a new phone while keeping my existing plan.
Instead of helping me, I was told that I would have to change my plan and pay more money each month. As someone on a fixed income, affordability is extremely important. I have been a loyal customer, but it feels like Rogers is not willing to support customers who rely on these lower-cost plans.
Because they would not allow me to keep my $25 monthly plan, I will be looking for a different cell phone provider. Very disappointing customer service and lack of flexibility for long-term customers

Lie to me about my bill, and now you wanna take my hockey away???

Rogers is a disgusting company that lies to their customers. Changed my phone plan a year ago to save money, was told my monthly bill would drop from $124 down to $90. Got my next bill and it was $134!! When I called to complain, they told me I couldn't have my old plan back, gave me less GB on my data, my bill was still more than they said it would be at $97 and has slowly been increasing each month.

And NOW they wanna cancel Hockey Night in Canada?!!

Wrong move Rogers...wrong move. Here I come Bell Canada.

Absolutely terrible experience with…

Absolutely terrible experience with Rogers. The only reason I switched over was because I was explicitly told that all activation fees for my five lines would be waived. That promise turned out to be completely false. Rogers ended up charging activation fees on every single line, which feels misleading and dishonest.

To make matters even worse, I spent over two hours on the phone trying to sort out my TV package. I was transferred around, put on hold repeatedly, and wasted a huge amount of my time. After all that, the final answer was that they couldn’t do anything for me. Two hours of my life gone for absolutely nothing.

The customer service experience was beyond frustrating. Nobody seemed to know what was going on, and nobody took responsibility for the promises that were made during the sales process. If Rogers cannot honor what they tell customers when signing them up, then how can anyone trust them?

This has been one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had with a telecommunications company. Misleading promises, unexpected charges, endless hold times, and no resolution. I deeply regret switching to Rogers and would not recommend them to anyone.

Well its fairly telling that I cannot…

Well its fairly telling that I cannot leave a Google review so I will leave one here instead... we are locked into an oligopoly in Canada so you basically have to take one of three providers so its pretty much jump from one scummy corporation to the next to keep your bill down. I would say that Rogers is better than Bell "Let's Pretend We Care About Mental Health" Inc. but this company is just as bad. In an age where these corporations are laying off people in droves I sit here on hold for, when I am writing this review, an hour and 52 minutes. Oh please can you implement more synergies with AI and leverage technologies to create more efficiencies whilst firing more people and becoming slightly shittier each year. In what world is it acceptable to lay as many people off as they do and service be this bad... wasn't AI, the excuse to lay these people, supposed to make things like this better? Buddy just answered the phone after an hour and 56 minutes and said I was in the wrong queue and he will now transfer me. After telling him that I wanted to talk to a supervisor, in which he refused, I said just transfer me. Insanely I got through to someone right away then they wanted to transfer me again. Once again, no supervisors are working right now... So I told the rep, who worked in Shaw Satellite (god only knows why I was transferred there), that I wanted her to wait with me while I was on hold to get to the next department... she said "ok wait one minute" and of course the department that I wanted to get through to is now closed... So I get to restart this process tomorrow. I would cut off a finger if it meant these companies went under, it would actually be less painful if they were replaced by a corporation that wasn't dog shit... but here we are.
