I have always been a keen user of…

I have always been a keen user of Savings Champion services, but this time they have let me down "big time".

My wife has followed the best buy tables for years and decided to take out an account with the bank (name withheld) paying the highest rate. She did not expect to have to jump through endless hoops to use the account in real life.

It does make me question how a bank with ludicrous requirements for using the account gets "top billing" by Savings Champion.

Perhaps a more thorough check should have been carried out by SC as I would believe 80% of the customers who use the "Best Buy" tables would not have a clue how to use this account and resent the day they made the application.

Beware the "non working days".

It should be mentioned that this useful site, unlike similar comparison sites, appears not to be updated at weekends and Bank Holidays (about 30% of the year), at a time when many offers open and are quickly withdrawn. On the weekend of 23/24 April 2022, the Kent Reliance 1 year 2.05% bond was widely listed on other comparison sites, but were absent from the Savings Champion listings, which remained exactly how they appeared on Friday afternoon, until 9.30am on Monday.

I cannot believe a "savings champion"…

I cannot believe a "savings champion" site is now recommending investing in equities or bonds for novices, I think perhaps you should rename to "bait for the city sharks". Yes savings are losing money, historically they always do, but at least you know the loss rate, unlike investments, (which should be label ed gambling for suckers), if your really concerned go and buy 1oz gold bullion coins, Britannias are VAT and capital gains tax free, and over time usually keep pace with inflation, keep them safe, (bury them, it worked for pirates), and tell no one, sit back relax.

Like Cigarettes There Should be Warnings

I normally find the newsletter interesting and informative, not to mention useful.
However I was less than impressed with the 'flag-waving' in support of a Lasting Power of Attorney. The article was no more than an advert in disguise for a legal service company.
Everything was painted as a wonderful document which gives peace of mind and allows you to retain control.
This is absolute rubbish - you are handing over COMPLETE control of every aspect of your life. I accept in most cases the Power can only bring benefits - but not in every case. There are unscrupulous people and a Power in the wrong hands is a jackpot. The article contained no warnings - for example the holder can change your will at the stroke of a pen - in their favour. They have carte-blanche with your finances. I have even seem elderly people crying out for residential care being denied it in favour of a cheaper home care option - just to protect the inheritance. By all means promote what is a useful tool but point out the potential pitfalls. I am speaking from 40 years in financial services and trust me - the love of money is overwhelming for some. Ability to complain - never saw it work yet. Literally there are no controls or redress.

Dear Satisfied Customer,

Thank you for your review. I thought it was important to respond, so I asked Co-op Legal Services to review the comments you have made, as at Savings Champion we are not legal professionals. However, I do take on board your thoughts and we will consider them in any future articles around this important subject.

The legal experts at Co-op Legal Services have provided the following response to your comments.

Firstly, an attorney cannot change the will of the person they are acting for. Through a lasting power of attorney, the person making the document chooses when someone can step in to manage their finances – either at a time of their choosing (which may have been useful for anyone shielding during the pandemic) or only when the person making the document has lost mental capacity. Importantly, it is the choice of the person making the lasting power of attorney, who should step in and when, and you can choose the extent of some of the powers and when they can be used. Every attorney is legally obliged to act in the best interests of the person they are representing and they are accountable to the Office of the Public Guardian for any actions that appear to be outside of that clear requirement.

Without creating a lasting power of attorney, your next of kin would be required to obtain a court order to manage your finances – this is a long, costly and intrusive process and you lose the opportunity to choose who you feel is right to represent you. One of the many benefits of using a regulated legal services provider such as Co-op Legal Services to help you put lasting power of attorney in place, is the advice you receive about the decisions you need to make.

Thank you once again for your observations and if you would like any further clarity, then please feel free to contact us at info@savingschampion.co.uk

Poor advice on obtaining LPA. Use .gov direct

I’m a consistent user of Savings Champions and about to use The Private Office.
However I was disappointed by their recent mailer on LPA and guidance to pay for a service.
The .gov site applying for a LPA is as clear and easy to fill in as it gets. You will be submitting the same simple required information to the paid for service as is required by .gov. You will be paying the same fee for registration in both cases. The paid for service will just be forwarding on the information you provide and could have filled in on line.
It somehow makes me question the independence of S C and is making me a little apprehensive about The Private Office now.
I don’t understand why they felt the need to confuse the ease of application

Once a really helpful site

This began as a really helpful site - a great place to make quick checks on your accounts and interest rates as well as finding more competitive rates. I've spotted an error every now and again and pointed it out by an email but never once have Savings Champion responded or even corrected their error. The site shows a lot out outdated rates now and you could be left thinking everything is good when it's most certainly not, or that a move to a different account will yield a better return when actually it doesn't. Maybe it's just Covid-related but they seem to have lost their way.

Very unimpressed

Very unimpressed. Weekly newsletter always way out of date. Articles are like telling granny how to suck eggs. Best Buy tables always out of date. Variable rate savings table for easy access accounts always included accounts with just in of two withdrawals a year. Asked if they could have a true instant access account table and reply was an emphatic NO

First webinar i have ever done

for the first webinar i have ever done, it was extremely informative.
From the first acceptance via email to logging into the site via the link, was easy, straightforward and user friendly.
the only thing i did not know about was the chat box on the right until i noticed it at the end. just a minor issue on my part but overall, useful, entertaining and the presenter were, from what i heard, knowledgeable in there fields so happy with the content.
if you wish to glean information on financial aspects of life, this is the one to use.

What an excellent experience

I hadn’t thought about moving my savings until NS&I had decided to dramatically reduce their interest rates, which prompted me to carry out a review. I’m really glad I did now and I guess it would have been beneficial to do this a while ago, but comfort and security in NS&I created a feeling of do nothing.
I had seen Savings Champion pop up a few times during my searches and in newspapers, so I decided to contact them to find out what it was all about. From the very first, and prompt, phone call to them I was treated well, felt no pressure and was surprised to receive some advice there and then after sharing what I believed were my needs. Daniel Darragh at Savings Champion was absolutely superb from the first call, to assessing my needs and helping me think through options available, to carrying out the detailed research (along with the team!) through to assisting with the applications in some detail and right up until the point of confirmation from various banking institutions; and even then is available to me for advice and assistance. The fee I paid for the service will be paid back many times with the additional interest paid.
Daniel is my rock star and I have no hesitation in recommending Savings Champion and I will certainly be using them again in the future.
Thanks Daniel and the team at Savings Champion!

Misleading claim - why?

The claim that building societies perform better than banks is quite misleading. Best buy tables show quite clearly the opposite.

This claim does not reflect well on Savings Champion.

Dear Ted, thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. It’s disappointing that you have given us such a low rating based on this article – especially since we agree with what you say. In the article we say “challenger banks are clearly an exception to the rule, as many of these providers are actively competing in the savings market and in many cases dominating the best buy tables”.

We believe that without the challenger banks, there would have been even less competition over the last few years, so these providers have been incredibly valuable. However, the whole of market and independent research shows that, as a whole, building societies pay better rates than banks – no doubt the latter being dragged down by the high street banks in particular – who not only hold a huge proportion of savers’ money but also pay some of the worst rates on the market.

At Savings Champion we are completely independent and do not favour any specific providers, other than those who pay savers the best rates.

A valuable tool for savers

Subscribing to Savings Champion is very valuable to savers in that it allows a regular overview of savings providers, changes to interest rates and in highlighting new products.
The only whinge I have is that my occasional attempts to submit a question via its Webform hardly ever results in a reply. I've stopped bothering now. With this exception, I value Savings Champion's information and would recommend it.
