Product details

Brand: Seattle Pottery Supply

FIRING RANGE: CONE 4 - 5 (2167-2186ºF) Wet Color: Brown Firing Color: Gold w/ dark speckles Texture: Lightly Coarse Avg. Shrinkage 2±%: 8 at cone 5 Despite the fact we released it on April Fool’s Day, this clay is no joke (the name actually refers to the gold-mimicking mineral Pyrite). Fool’s Gold has a rich, warm, golden brown color with black speckles and an exemplary throwing ability. It performs best at Cone 4, and fires to Cone 5 with off-gassing possible at hotter temps (similar to Fool's Gold or Eclipse). It is not recommended for Cone 6 or higher. In general, it has great fired strength: perfect for tableware and drinkware. All pieces exhibit an extreme durability that will hold up in industrial dishwashers and the toughest things life has to throw at it. Fool's Gold includes manganese. Some of our favorite features: Rich, warm, golden brown color with black flecks Exemplary throwing ability No absorption, and an extremely dense matrix, when fired at cone 6, that still allows for early gassing in kiln to reduce chances of bubbles in glazes as well as body bloating if overfired Great fired strength: perfect for tableware and drinkware - all pieces exhibit an extreme durability that will hold up in industrial dishwashers and the toughest things life has to throw at it A great gold finish!

I love being able to see the speckled character of the clay on areas I don’t add colored glazes to. Easy. To carve and to imprint designs into the clay

I love fools gold for handbuiding and it’s amazing speckle coloring when fired. Great for adding art and leaving the rest of the clay with a clear coat glaze.

I love the background clay with the large flecks. Never bloats at ^6 with a 30 min. hold. It adds an interesting appearance with all those flecks in my agateware.

feels like stiff groggy earthen ware. very pretty when fired mine was kind of pink. Not very trim able, the iron frits cause scratches. fun to throw

I love the feel of this clay and the way it causes subtle reactions with the glaze. The speckles are attractive and it's a good throwing and hand-building clay.
