My third trip to Botswana and this time…
My third trip to Botswana and this time I did the 9-Day All Lodge with the family owned Sekanka Safaris.
Directly after arrival in Maun I started with a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta giving a wonderful overview oft he landscape.
After 3 days of home accomodation in Maun we flew to Kasane first staying in Waterlily Hotel, a good stay for Chobe Boat cruises with a small boat (much better than the big ones!) spotting buffalos, crocodils, hippos, elephants bathing, giraffes, many birds and at the end highlighted by incredible sunsets. Next days we stay in Pamarah Hotel enjoying the pleasant accommodation, perfect meals and nice service. One day we started an outstanding tour to Victoria Falls, next day we experienced vulpture feeding, old victoria hotel and the Zambesi River Cruise on the signature desk with extraordinary snacks and drinks which I would really recommend for relaxing after a long day. After these days we enjoyed again the outstanding wildlife in Chobe Bush Camp and Elephant Sands what gave me the most wonderful memories. On our tour back to Maun another highlight was the Meerkat experience in Makgadikgadi salt pan beeing so close to these cute small animals.
Perfect itinery, nice accommodations and gorgeous game drives with experienced guides made this holiday a long lasting memory and made it hard to come back home.
Sekanka tours
Sekanka tours
We had a nine days tour from Victoria Falls to Maun in June 2024 with Sekanka Tours.
The weather was great at this time of the year.
The trip was very well organized. Nice accommodation including the quality of the tents with comfort and safety. Good food and excellent guide.
We had the chance to see many kinds of wild animals. Amazing views. Good assistance during the tour planning and flexibility.
The negative aspect to point out is the quality of the both cars used along the expedition. Cars were very old and uncomfortable compared to most of other company's cars we met along the way.
My conclusion is that Sekanka offered us much more than a safari. Actually we were immersed in a great expedition and a unforgettable experience.
The company is extremely reliable and I strongly recommend his services.
Amazing nature experience
At my first visit to Botswana, I chose to go for safari with the Sekanka team, and it was a great choice! Sekanka is a citizen owned and family-run mobile safari company based in Maun in the vicinity of the unique world renowned Okavango Delta. I was feeling I am in good hands from the first moment, surrounded by the people who know their country and love it.
Inspired by the website, I decided to go on the 4 day (3 nights) midrange camping tour, and I got more than I expected. We were led by Selani, the tour guide with more than twenty years of experience, who understands the habits of the animals and knows the are of the Khwai River area well, and it was very helpful.
From Maun, we drove through the Mababe Depression, where we could see plenty of elephants just from the road. We made a few stops to stretch the legs and take pictures, including the lunch stop.
During the early morning and evening drives in the nature, we had a good luck to watch number of lions fighting over the territory and catch, a leopard whose catch was stolen by lions and then chased away, or mother hyena taking care of her cubs. Just few hundred metres from our campsite, the lions killed the buffalo, and we could barely sleep at night when the predators were fighting over the prey. It is very easy to spot elephants, hippos, zebras, giraffes, all kinds of antelopes, and buffalos within Moremi Game Reserve. A trip on Khwai on the mokoro, traditional wooden boat, gave us another perspective of the river.
For all three nights, we were based in a tented camp at the bank of the Khwai River. The camping beds have comfortable mattrass and there is a shower and the toilet by the tent. Besides the great tour guide, we were taken care of by experienced chef and four guys responsible for the campsite and the fire.
Sekanka picked us up at the airport and drove us to our accommodation in Maun – the same on the way back. Thanks to Anna and her team for amazing time in the wilderness and helping us to explore beautiful nature of Botswana!
Best safari in Africa
This Safari has started off as good as no one would have imagined. hot line to Germany from zimbabwe and several offers tailored to our requirements
Service above our expectations, going beyond efforts!
The safari itself has been amazing as the staff were not only super friendly but also helpful at every second. We would call each and every one member a friend by now.
Unique experiences in game, but also in wild & remote camping has been exceptional. Especially in moments of adversity the team excelled in managing challenging situations.
We would not only recommend but will definitely book again with Sekanka in the foreseeable future!!
Thank you so much! Marco & Yannick
Sekanka Safaris-amazing trip
Just returned from a 9 day private safari with Sekanka Safaris. We wanted to take our 9 year old grandson and, in researching, Sekanka welcomed him with open arms. We did the Maun to Vic Falls route and couldn't have had a better experience. Thalo and his team were amazing. They went out of their way to make a memorable experience. The twice daily safaris did not disappoint and we even saw a pack of endangered wild dogs with 6 pups! Included were elephants, leopard, giraffe, honey badger, ostrich and more. We kept a daily list and counted over 35 different animals and birds. The team worked like clockwork to set up camp, provide delicious meals (what Sarah can do with some hot coals and cast iron is amazing!) and get us to where we needed to be despite some challenging conditions. We highly recommend them making safety top priority in everything. They were were responsive to all my questions during the planning stages and made the trip of a lifetime for all of us. I would highly recommend them and wouldn't hesitate to use them again
This was my first time in Africa and I…
This was my first time in Africa and I wanted to try something different than the standard touristy trip. I was traveling with a friend and we wanted a trip that would give us the full experience of getting away from the main tourist areas. Sekanka delivered. Thalo customized our trip to focus on the areas we were most interested in seeing. We saw a lot of animals, we saw a lot of nature. The Mokoro trip was amazing and I felt like I was in the middle of the Lion King. I highly recommend Sekanka for anyone that is looking for a more adventurous trip.
Perfect company for tailor-made tented safari
When traveling to Botswana we were looking for a suitable company to discover the Okavango Delta / Savuti / Chobe area with and decided to go for a tented safari. There are many companies offering this and we had requested a quote from a handful that appeared the best to us. We decided to go for Sekanka since their offer was most elaborate and left most room for flexibility. It was a tailor-made tour for just our party (family of 4). The price was average, not the cheapest but not the most expensive either. We're very happy we decided to go for Sekanka. Since they had little to no reviews online we were a bit hesitant if they were legit but they certainly were. We were met in Maun from where we delved into a wonderful safari throughout the areas we wanted to explore. It's a small company and that has upsides and downsides. The upside being the intimate/friendly atmosphere and flexibility to decide your own itinerary. Your tour is with Macha (guide), Thalo (driver/guide) and Neem (cook). Being small, setting up camp and breaking up camp is done by the same team and that takes a bit of time. That immediately was the downside of the smaller team; you do not have a team traveling ahead to take care of camp set up. On days that we spent just one night in a camp it was a bit rushed and less room for game rides. But the days with more than one night in one camp were simply divine. The area we enjoyed most was the xakanaxa area. It may sound spoiled but once you've spend a couple of days there in the stunning surroundings and game views, nothing can beat that and chobe was already rather 'everyday'. During those first days we were lucky to see a group of wild dogs devour their prey, a leopard with his recent kill and many many other more common game. A tented safari is in a tent and that will always be less comfort. It didn't bother us at all. You sleep on relatively comfortable stretchers with mattress, there is a bucket shower for your daily hot shower (twice a day if you want), a sit on toilet. Breakfast is simple, lunch nice but dinner beyond our expectations, Neem is a great chef and what she managed to prepare with limited tools was amazing. But you are in the dust and will feel a bit dirty. That's why our last few days in a beautiful lodge in Victoria Falls were extra welcoming. If you were to ask me what I would do different, I would limit my safari to 3 nights in Xakanaxa, then go to Kasane for the boat tour (really nice as well) and not spend several days mostly traveling throughout Kuai/Savuti/Chobe. These areas were less stunning than Xakanaxa and a bit rushed with therefore less game to view. It was fully our choice to select that itinerary though and was executed to their best abilities. It's just advice for other travelers who are still determining their safari. I would also recommend to bring 'through away washing cloths' to keep yourself clean and not to worry too much about the right color clothing and sturdy shoes. We didn't do much walking and were just happy we didn't bring anything too brand new since it all got pretty dirty. Go for comfort, not style. In all a 5 out of 5 experience that I can recommend to anybody.
