Booked an introduction at 16:20

Booked an introduction at 16:20. This was confirmed by the tutor. Somehow they then proceeded to change the timeslot to 15:50 without notifying me, so I missed the introduction when I tried to join the call at 16:20. I Send an email to customer service, no response. Useless service

Excellent Tutoring Platform

Excellent Tutoring Platform
As a senior tutor, during the onboarding process I have been pleased by the professionalism of this platform, its procedures and tools (safeguarding in first place). If I were a parent/guardian I won't hesitate to choose this platform for my children. I guess Sherpa is the best private online tutoring platform in the UK

Disappointed tutor

I have only done a little work with Sherpa even though I’m a very experienced tutor. I recently agreed to a job - but soon it became apparent that the parent of the child would sit next to her daughter during the sessions which I think most teachers would find overbearing. She also had a variety of expectations that didn’t align with what I saw.

I admit my teaching was slightly altered by the anxiety that was rearing its head before every lesson because of this micro managing from a parent who, by her own admission, had found it difficult to find a suitable tutor previously. Maybe I could have said something earlier- but I remained optimistic to my own detriment that this would pass and that my efforts to gain a real learning relationship would then mean I felt I could have given constructive criticism- without fear of recrimination. After just 3 sessions this would started to happen naturally. But I decided this wasn’t going to be easy to achieve because if anxiety- so I messaged the mother nicely to say it may be better for her to find a tutor who does things her way. Irrespective of the ins and outs I received a personal abusive message - and Sherpa refunded the mother the problem lesson and kept the disrespectful and untrue review - without considering the events that had led up to this point. They disregarded a few of the flags and didn’t listen to my view and told me to just forget it. I am an adult professional who works with high end clients and this is THE only company I have worked for who don’t at least mediate between tutor and customer - and at the minimum listen as sometimes the customer isn’t always right. The mother called me ‘love’ and accused me of marking other students work while i was teaching -when I only ever look at past papers, mark schemes, help sheets etc and would have been more than happy to have my phone looked at. If I didn’t have such positive reviews over the last 15 years elsewhere this could easily have dented my confidence. So if you are considering working with Sherpa just be cautious as my tale is salutary- make your case for exiting difficult tuition sessions as soon as -
as you may not be listened to until it’s too late.A very disappointing experience with no resolution.

Good experience overall

So far I've been a Tutor with Sherpa for about 3-4 weeks, and it's been very good, from my point-of-view.

The original interview/onboarding session involved questions about my qualifications, experience, skillset, and how I would approach delivering lessons; we briefly spoke about protocols & regulations; and then went through the whiteboard demo which was fairly straightforward.

What originally attracted me to Sherpa was their mission to pioneer technology-enhanced education, and videos I saw on their social media channels showcasing other tutors.

With regard to my experience as a Sherpa Tutor:
--- You communicate with students via the conversation text messages, and to book sessions; additionally you have the freedom to alter your date/time availability on your profile.
--- You define what types of subjects you are knowledgeable in, and good at teaching, (for me it is a variety of fields across sciences/biosciences).
--- There's actually a lot I had to put into preparing for lessons/sessions, especially at first, but you learn to get used to it quickly. Also it's because there are so many different types of students at different levels/grades, different ages, studying different subjects, with different personalities & preferred styles of learning, and with varying requests.
--- It's definitely an interesting and profound experience having to deal with individuals with a broad range of backgrounds and life goals.
--- I've had a chance to use all the functionalities in the e-classroom system, for example in the whiteboard space, where both tutor and student can draw coloured visual diagrams on top of my uploaded ppt documents & educational resources I created; students found that very engaging and intellectually stimulating.
--- You can also report and advise and request tech features, as these are being constantly improved/developed more and more by the computing/developer team. I've also had a few interactions with members of the customer service admin team and I think they were very responsive and helpful.

So whether you're a student, or looking for side-work as a tutor, or wanting to work more directly at the company, or if you're an investor of sorts, well I would definitely recommend Sherpa to anyone else out there. At least give it a try and see how it goes; it may not be the experience you expected, but either way I think it would certainly be a useful learning experience for you.

As for my score rating, I would say it's not perfect 100% obviously, but I’m giving 5/5 stars instead of 4/5.
