Shift 4 are NOT worth going with. We had a long relationship with SmartPay and were then bought out by these people. Our monthly fees went from approximately $35 per month to $800 per month and then reduced to $110 per month. Our monthly through the machine went from $1000 per month to $10,000 per month to avoid the $110 fee. No notification, change the rules when Smartpay bought out. They have no regard for small business that can't turn over $10,000 per month. We asked about why the change and were informed by the consultant that they do not want small business and that they needed to reduce the $800 fee to $110 due to inadequate notice. We asked if the ACCC were looking into it, they went very silent on the matter. Go with another provider, don't waste your time with these people. We have called on many occasions for money being taken from our account for no reason and had to fight to get it back, stressful etc....They say call us and we can discuss but we get the same reply...not interested unless you can turn over $10,000 per month to avoid the ridiculous and exorbitant fee.

This company is extremely disappointing to deal with.
I originally signed up with them for my business, but after we closed the business, Shift4 refused to close the account and continued to charge us. This is completely unacceptable.
On top of that, the sales engineer in the Houston area has been very unprofessional and difficult to reach — calls are not returned, and there is little to no support when you actually need help.
We’ve since opened three other businesses, and because of this experience, we chose not to use Shift4 again. That alone should say a lot about their customer service.
Business was closed on November 1, 2025, and they are still asking for money.
I would strongly recommend others think twice before signing up.

This company is an absolute thief!!! i’ve paid for a wireless fee for a unit that i don’t even have !!!! then i find out they kept 930.00 from a 2163.00 transaction!!!! i called customer service about a charge that i accidentally added an extra number by mistake so she takes the 21863.00 charge and reduces it to 19700.00 but instead of fee correcting itself it kept the % fee for 21863.00!!!!! then i called within 24 hrs to fix and that’s what they did !!!! and i find out that im paying for premium customer support!!! i asked to talk to a supervisor and the girl refused she just kept saying… they are going to say the same thing!! so then she gives me the em a i l legalsupporttickets @ shift4.com. i’ve sent 3 emails over the last 3 weeks and no response!!! i also find out their going to charge a flat fee of 250 or 350 for what??? go somewhere else.. im turning these guys in!!

Absolutely dreadful service and support. Yes, they are sickeningly friendly, but you have to wait forever to get to someonone and then they don't actually solve your issue. They overcharge and extend your contract even after you've cancelled. They somehow even when lawsuits because they must be fabricating non-existent contracts. We were guaranteed no hardware fees for one year, pay the hardware fees the second year and then own the equipment. We cancelled in October 2025. They have continued to charge us monthly fees and won't let us keep the equipment. They extended our contract to January 2027 even though we cancelled October 2025. Absolutely horrible company to work with. They screw you every single chance they get and then lock you into things you never agreed on and win the lawsuits even if you prove them wrong.

I really can't say enough bad things about this company. I feel taken advantage of by them and lied to. The equipment is garbage, constantly restarting, it can't even process their own Shift4 branded gift cards half the time. Forget anything about a menu change in any way being simple, using lighthouse to make changes to the menu is time consuming, confusing, and IF you can get it right, nine times out of ten, somehow, something you didn't even mess with has been moved/deleted/price change/ or it will reset to something that it was before at random times. The setup was a mess in itself, it took an entire day and they still had to send someone else out to "fix" the issues I was having with the equipment (nothing changed, waste of time both on the phone for hours with Shift4 customer support and business time.) THEY DO NOT HAVE COMPETITIVE RATES, THEY ARE JUST MAKING THAT UP. You will save money by sticking with square or clover, those are the only ones I'm familiar with but I would not be shocked if there were plenty other cheaper options. The fees are outrageous, and out of no where. If you need to call that 24/7 support they promise you will be so good, be sure to set aside about 3 hours so that they can walk you around in circles saying nothing and directing you to no one that can help you. Oh and when you're over all of it and you just want them to come pick up the trash system they left in your store, they're going to tell you that you owe them $6,000 to cancel because that's the projected amount they would make from you. When you say that is the most ridiculous thing you've ever heard, they'll tell you that you have to have a lawyer contact their legal team, there is no other option. Get a lawyer, pay us $6,000, or keep bleeding money and time into a company that couldn't care less about your business. This is a scam, when the sales guy shows up, be a little passive aggressive because they WILL NOT STOP unless you are.

Cancelled my service, sent the hardware back, was told over the phone when I called to give them the tracking number they would not charge that months fee. They did charge that months fee, called up them to ask what happened, was advised by customer service they would refund. No refund was actioned. It's not about the money, its about a business providing a service and keeping their word..

Deceptive billing and ridiculous customer service
Stay away from Shift4. After years of smooth service with Smartpay, the transition to Shift4 has been a disaster. They changed my plan and significantly increased my fees, providing "notice" via a single email that was very easy to miss. They then auto-debited my account before I could even process the change.
When I reached out to resolve this, I spent an hour on hold only to deal with staff who were unhelpful and dismissive. Their attitude was essentially "it's your fault for not seeing the email." It feels like being cheated by a company that relies on stealthy fee hikes rather than good service.
I have terminated my service immediately. Do your research and choose a provider that actually values transparency. Don't waste your time or money here.

The company is a scam. They kept adding to charges every month with saying there was an electronic message was sent to you last month regarding new fees even though I have a contract with them for 3 years. They still change the contract and justify by saying "sent you electronic message to your portal a month ago", then why did we sign a contract if it can be changed by them only! I signed a contract for 3 years for credit processing with a $25 cancel fee per month for remaining month of the contract if I wanted to terminate the contract. Every month either they charged me extra percentage on the processing or other fees such as EMV fees and ETC. Started with 0 monthly fee, only 2.65% on the processing but now it is $65 fixed fee plus the 3% processing fee. It was above 3.5% before I called them to cancel my account. They charged me $700 in the beginning of the year for some nonsense other fees. This is the worst credit card processing company that you can even imagine. Today, I tried to cancel the remain of my contract which was supposed to be $25 per month for 15 months remaining part but they said they changed it again and now I have to pay $12000 to cancel the contract. Such a scam. Be careful if you sign a contract with this company. YOU BETTER STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY.

Lee was really helpful setting up the account and very quickly after receiving the terminal was there to set it up and start using it. Very straightforward to use and customers, especially tourists like that they can get a paper receipt. Fees are very low and clearly visible on each statement and money is in my business account the following day.

Excellent product and service. The terminal is outstanding and works anywhere indoors or outdoors with WiFi or 4G. It's really fast and smart and you can have products in it too. Even better is that we pay £0 per month if we don't use it as there is no monthly rental which suits us perfectly. It's a super smart looking terminal too and Mark the rep was superb.

Shift 4 have been the cheapest provider we’ve used for rates, Sam is always on had to answer any questions and help with any issues. Payment is next day which is great! They also focus on what the business actually does and shoot content with their customers which is great!
