Poor Brompton workmanship. …

This company told me that they electrified a lot of Bromptons so I gave them the job of electrifying mine. They also said that they had experience of the Schulmpf drive.

I visited their premises to check progress and saw the mechanic was in the process of bending the Schulmpf foot lever 90 degrees away from the pedal crank. He obviously had never seen a Schulmpf dive before. You use a socket, you do not bend the lever.

The electrics were fitted and the Brompton did run but the wiring work was shoddy.

The wiring loom was bulky and caught in the folding mechanism, there was no real attempt to streamline the bundle of cables.

The connection between the bag and the frame electrics was too tight and the plug and socket fell to bits and needed extending with a more robust and rain proof connection.

The connection was too short to place the connection out of the rain in the bag.

The wiring on both sides of the bag connection were of different gauge's, vastly different.

The control unit was glued to a metal plate only by the information label.

This meant that the label parted with the plate as soon as it rained whilst the label was firmly stuck to the control unit.

There was a big gap between the plate and the control unit indicating that the screws were not fitted flush. The plate was doing nothing except showing sharp corners to the unwary.

The final straw that broke the camels back was that the two inner tubes I asked them to fit to my Brompton were the wrong ones.

The Brompton bike pump is Schrader valve compatible only, and all Bromptons use the Schrader valve on their inner tubes.

The valve hole in the rims is the size for the Schrader valves.

So they fitted Presta valve inner tubes which didn't locate properly in the rims and couldn't be pumped up with the Brompton pump and couldn't be pumped up with a Presta pump on the front wheel because they were too long.

There was no language difficulty but communication from the company was very poor and resulted in them being asked several times to try and get them to answer simple questions. I had to get a lot of questions answered by contacting their suppliers.

Overall not a good experience.

Given that they charged top dollar I would have expected a professional level of workmanship, knowledge and communication.
