Bruno Rebel and Marco (in the garage) were very professional and helpful. But don't rent an electric car! It is a nightmare - everyone in Portugal has their own home chargers, so the public ones don'... See more

Rúben was amazing, just great. Really made a difference in the experience.

Excellent experience with Sixt in Madeira Island. The staff member suggested upgrading for the mountain roads — totally worth the extra cost. Pickup and return were easy; although no physical inspection was done, taking photos worked fine. Very satisfied and would rent again.

Sixt still one of the best companies to rant a car and attention to the clients.

Paid a €400 deposit on arrival and was told multiple times and clarified with the agent that there were no extra charges and it was fully refundable. I’ve since been charged €207 for extras I didn’t choose and were told were free - such as a free upgrade, E-toll, roadside/tyre protection - I was told by the agent multiple times they were free. Having been in contact with Sixt since they are denying this took place.

1 year after the rental, which I made through Booking I received an invoice from Sixt Portugal for paying exactly the same amount as I already paying saying that these are "extra rental fees", because of the high season etc. Ridiculous service, they wanted to pay me twice, they even hired a Debt Collection Agency. They did not succeed, of course, but instead of saying "We are sorry" they make it look like they made a huge gesture for me. Never again with Sixt.

From the very beginning of my rental experience, I received all the detailed information I needed. At different stages, I was helped by two managers, João and Lucas - true professionals in their field.
I was offered the best possible options within the car class I was interested in. After trying the Porsche Cayenne and realizing that it didn’t have enough space for a long family trip, I was offered a swap to a Volvo XC90 with a price adjustment.
I’m very satisfied with the service and the overall communication with João and Lucas. I highly recommend SIXT Portugal, branch in the centre of Lisbon.

We are so disappointed with SIXT Car rental which we normally would rate as being good. My husband rented a car in the UK, and on the return he was told the car was fine. A week or so later he got an email to say they were charging the whole deposit for damage.
My husband had truthfully no idea what they were charging for, the image they sent was blurred with terrible lighting and you can not see what the damage is, also they told him on drop off that the car was fine. So this is a terrible act of profiteering, we have tried contacting customer service twice but had no response and no clear photos showing the damage. This is incredibly dishonest of this car hire company. As he was told the car was ok on return the damage could have been caused by themselves and they are just trying their luck. But as there are no clear images of the damage this is a terrible dishonest way to behave.
Without even a response from their team.
Even if they sent photos now how would we know if the damage wasn’t caused by them since drop off?
And as mentioned my husband has no idea what the damage is and was told the car was ok on drop off.
We are dumbfounded and we rent cars in other locations for work many times per year.
Shocking.

The car class we booked were not available, so we got a vehicle from a higher class, what is good, but when the Sixt personnel collected the car he saw someone left the window open and consequently it was soaking wet inside.
As they did not have more cars in th location, they drove us to another site and gave us a car from an even higher class.
Everything went really smooth, so 5 stars even with surprises

Very clear and good explanation of the options. Nice free upgrade. Excellent service.
Return was an adventure because of the lack of signage in the parking garage. Definitely needs improvement. Otherwise overall good experience.

Very dishonest company.
To start, the contract is given to you on the signature block. You are not supposed to read it. They will not let you see the car until it is signed. They will push you for insurance which is a scam. The cars here are all damaged and the first one we were given stank of cigarette smoke which they claimed to not know about. On return, the car was in the same condition as we were given it, yet they claim it to be damaged. We are currently trying to have the bill revoked because it is ridiculous and they will not provide evidence, however as they have my credit details I am powerless. Please go with Europcar, we will not use Sixt again.

Shocking. Avoid at all costs, you would think a larger rental company would be the way to go but it’s really not. They hide hidden charges tell you there part of the refundable deposit and then charge you them as soon as you leave the country. I will never use this company again in any country

Amazing rental experience, the only rental agency that accepts debit cards with low deposit.
Best service and amazing people.
I rent usually in Portimao and the team is just amazingly helpful.

Dramatic back office. It is LITERALLY impossible to get in touch with these people. They charge €100 in damage fees from your credit card with a photo as "evidence." The photo is from a completely different part of the car! Then you try to reach out: multiple emails, WhatsApp, chat function, and phone calls — you just get flat-out ignored. I've been trying to reach someone for over a month now and STILL haven't been able to speak to a single person. Absolutely disgraceful customer support. How on earth can you run a company like this in this day and age? This is borderline fraudulent.

I hire cars with Sixt since 2018 every year more than one time per year and different countries. No issues and staff always there.
Friendly and efficient staff and system.
Totally advise to go with Sixt.
Thanks for your service.

We are writing this review to warn other customers about our extremely disappointing experience with Sixt, booked via DiscoverCars, during what was supposed to be our honeymoon.
We arrived at the Sixt office in Madeira Funchal 15 minutes before closing time to pick up our rental car. We DID have a physical credit card with us. Unfortunately, it was not in the name of the main driver. The correct physical credit card was back at our hotel, but due to Sixt’s imminent closing time, we were not able to retrieve it by foot before the office closed (but we would have been able with a taxi, but the employee told us to return the next morning)
This is where the situation was mishandled, because of the misleading and false information provided by Sixt staff.
The female employee explicitly told us that this was not a problem and that we could return the next morning to collect the car instead. There was no warning, no disclaimer, and no explanation of consequences. We relied on this information and left the office in good faith.
That statement turned out to be false.
When we returned the following morning with the credit card in the main drivers name, a male employee refused to release the car altogether. Instead, he stated that we would receive a full refund via DiscoverCars. This was not implied or ambiguous — it was clearly promised, and we have this promise on video. Any Sixt representative is welcome to contact us to review the recording.
So, to be very clear:
We were misled the first time when a Sixt employee told us to come back the next morning.
We were misled the second time when another Sixt employee refused the car but promised a full refund, which never happened.
Relying on this second assurance, we left the office and rented a car another place. Had we been told the truth — that we would receive neither the car nor our money back — we would never have left the office. We would have acted immediately, including involving the police on the spot, which we only did later once it became clear we had been deceived.
We paid over €500 for this rental.
We received no car.
We received no refund.
In other words, we paid over €500 for absolutely nothing.
We pursued the matter through our bank and VISA and lost — not because the situation was reasonable or fair, but because the contract technically allows this outcome. That does not change the fact that we were lied to twice, face-to-face, once of those times documented on video.
For a company operating in the travel industry — where customers rely on accurate, honest guidance in time-critical situations — this behavior reflects a severe lack of transparency and integrity.
We strongly advise others to avoid both Sixt and DiscoverCars. This experience cost us a substantial amount of money, unnecessary stress, and overshadowed what should have been a joyful honeymoon.

Actually very unhappy to have to write this because I’ve always found Sixt to be very good despite the reviews / rating.
Well and truly robbed this time when we did a group booking for 4 cars. I was told to book the cars individually by the chat assistant on the website. When we got to Faro they added the drivers as they said the would. Then paid the deposit as usual and petrol. I’d had two hours sleep so didn’t think much of it. When we got to our cars we didn’t have Nissan Qashqai’s as booked but that’s not always unusual. The Renault’s were not better but similar in size. Dropped off no problem.
I’ve then been charged afterwards for upgrading all four cars and adding me as a driver to all four cars!! I explained that we needed one driver per car. I still had faith though that this would be resolved so emailed Sixt. Only to be told that I’d 100% agreed to all this and it was all explained to me. I’d also apparently requested upgrades all round! Obviously I’d signed for this so I’m at fault.
Very very disappointed to be scammed and duped.

Long-time Sixt customer (usually renting in Lisbon), but this was my first rental from Sixt Porto and the service was excellent. Mrs. Bianca was very helpful and professional, making sure I chose the right car for my needs and clearly explaining the insurance options, which can really help in unexpected travel situations.
Thank you and congratulations to Mrs. Bianca for the great job!
