A terrible course run by a terrible company

I wrote my original review on 19th March 2025.

CoGrammar replied on 15th April 2025.

They said "...We’ve reviewed your profile and verified your contact information, and a member of our Student Success team will be reaching out to you shortly..."

But till date (4 weeks later), no one has contacted me yet?

Why?

Bootcamp changed my life

I initially did not think a bootcamp could help teach me coding skills quickly. I had great online support from humans which is was far higher support than I expected going into an online experience. I studied with HyperionDev South Africa branch and was very happy with the support I recieved, including from staff like Tevin Pitts. I do think someone can take a bootcamp like this and have a story of transitioning to a new job in Tech.

All thanks to HyperionDev South African Branch.

Hyperion Dev was a great experience and…

Hyperion Dev was a great experience and a well thought out introduction in to coding. I want to get in to AI so learning python was a good first step. The course work is well laid out and easily understandable. Furthermore the tutors are excellent and patient.

Good content more1-2-1 support is needed

I am studying digital marketing with AI. Our tutor is really lovely and very knowledgeable. But 80% of each class is filled with housekeeping info and other standard things that keep repeating, and, is very little time left for the actual content of the class, plus you are allowed to have up to 3 1-2-1 sessions / week, but you will find very hard to find any slots available for those sessions. Also lack of understanding for specific situations when people need an extension to complete their study.
And in some formd and documents informantion is not updated dor digital marketing course, it still says Web development, but those are minor details.
Otherwise very good teacher, knowledgeable and supportive

Superb course, very helpful and cooperative mentors.Helpfull and handy customer service.Do not pay attention to negotiate reviews on the course as for sure are not based on personal experience and likely a siniciter attepmt to tarnish the reputation of the course.

Excellent Hands-On Learning with Career Support

I’m currently studying at Data Science Bootcamp, and it’s been a great experience so far. The hands-on projects, knowledgeable instructors, and career-focused resources like resume workshops stand out the most. The program is well-structured and helps build a strong foundation for a data science career.

One suggestion would be to speed up feedback on assignments and add more coverage of emerging tools. Overall, it’s a solid choice for anyone serious about data science!

Completed the course, no certification...

Completed the course, was promised an amazon voucher for getting a job offer. Received no certification, received no voucher. Dropped by DfE for charging students for a free course. Login deleted on completion. So in total a 6 month waste of time, with nothing to show for it. Pretty embarrassing.

Avoid at all costs

I applied for a DfE-funded skills bootcamp hosted by CoGrammar back in December, specifically a bootcamp that taught Python and Javascript as my company uses Javascript and I wanted to move roles internally. I was finally added to the cohort in March, only to discover on my first day that the course content had changed – there was now a new course dedicated to front end development, and the software engineering bootcamp that I was on had scrapped Javascript entirely from the curriculum. Even though I emailed CoGrammar on literally the FIRST day of the bootcamp, I was told I could not change courses, so I was basically stuck doing four months of work learning something I had no use for.

Whatever, I thought, at least once I get the basics of Python down I can practice Javascript in my free time. So I sucked it up and carried on with the course – but it became clear very quickly what an absolute shambles the entire bootcamp was. I kept a list of all the things that went wrong during the four months, intending to complain to the DfE and beg them to cut ties with CoGrammar, but thankfully they already have. So I'd like to share the most egregious issues here so anyone considering paying for this bootcamp can quickly spend their money elsewhere, because I guarantee it will not be worth it.

1. The course syllabus advertises that jobs in the fields related to the bootcamp will pay between £50k and £75k. However, on our first careers session we were told as bootcamp graduates we could expect to earn max £30k as a starting salary. Completely misleading and I'm sure a lot of people were begging to be able to quit the course at that point.
2. When you register for the bootcamp, you complete a survey about yourself where one of the questions asks what you intend to do with the skills you learn. One of the options is "upskill in my current role", yet a requirement to get the certificate is to have a job offer within three months of completing the bootcamp! That means sending out a ridiculous amount of applications and attending interviews for jobs you have no intention of taking if you're planning on staying with your company, which is a huge waste of time for everyone involved.
3. The sessions themselves were plagued with issues – the tutors' internet connections would drop for good chunks of time, the careers sessions started late, and time was wasted by constantly repeating housekeeping for every single lecture. As a result they often ran long, which is super annoying when they're already scheduled to end at 9. One time a tutor never showed up for the session, and even though I brought it up in the next lecture, we never heard anything from CoGrammar about what happened.
4. There is no opportunity whatsoever to communicate with other students, whether in a webinar chat or a separate forum, so if you're struggling on an assignment you're basically stuck. They do allow you to book mentor calls but you usually need to do this three weeks in advance to get a timeslot, which means submitting your assignments late as they're due every three days.
5. Grading assignments took forever which meant every time you logged onto your dashboard, you were told you were falling behind even though you'd submitted all the necessary assignments. On one occasion I still hadn't had an assignment graded for 21 days and had to reach out to my career coach as it was blocking me being able to complete the next assignment.
6. This is a bootcamp teaching you how to code, and yet they can't even sort their own platforms out. You use a Google calendar for your class schedule, Dropbox to download and upload assignments, Livestorm to attend a lecture, and their own awful dashboard to submit assignments and receive feedback.
7. How good is the teaching? Two months into the bootcamp, we did a poll at the start of the lecture in which 3%(!!) of people got the correct answer. I got it wrong too despite having the lecture notes open in front me.
8. You will get constantly spammed with emails and WhatsApp messages throughout your bootcamp. I had to block CoGrammar on WhatsApp because there was no way to opt out (pretty sure this is a GDPR violation?).
9. The final nail in the coffin to prove what a waste of an experience I'd just had was the last few assignments I submitted. I had to keep resubmitting one because my lines of code were longer than guidelines, which they weren't. When I submitted screenshots proving this and asking for a detailed explanation, the response I received referred to file names I had NOT submitted. That, combined with another assignment review that called me by a different name, made it clear that they were grading me based on someone else's submission!!

AVOID AVOID AVOID. This company is clearly incompetent and does not deserve a penny of your money.

Scam - will ask you for money that you should not give

Took part in a DfE funded course back in March, which started out alright but then clearly became extremely reliant on reviewing material by yourself, something which can absolutely be done (probably easier) by following a free coding course somewhere else.

The course gives you a deadline of the 30th of September to secure a job offer in order to receive a certification of completion (or so it said when joining) however, what that deadline is actually for is for them to begin hounding you chasing vast amounts of money for a free course, citing some BS hidden clause in the terms and conditions you accept when joining, that states you must pay them if you can't find a job (the content within the course means I'd probably estimate about 5% of individuals receive a job offer within the year, as most businesses are looking for someone who has been coding for more than 2 months even in the most junior roles).

The DfE then sent emails advising participants to avoid any sort of payment as the courses are 100% funded by the government (not anymore as they have now cut ties with CoGrammar, presumably due to this debacle), meaning the company has received government funding to run these bootcamps and still have the gall to ask participants to pay when they inevitably can't get a job.

Interestingly enough, on the CoGrammar website, they are still advertising places in a new DfE funded course, despite the fact the DfE have made it clear they no longer want anything to do with them!

Avoid like the plague. If you're a beginner and want to learn to code, there are plenty of free, comprehensive courses online that won't scam you.
