Unexpected Charge During Signup – Be Careful

I attempted to create a Songtrust account and entered my credit card information as part of completing the registration. At no point was there a clear “Pay” or “Submit Payment” button, yet my card was charged automatically for the registration fee.

I never submitted any music, used any services, or intended to pay at that moment. Despite this, the fee was non-refundable according to their Terms of Service.

Be aware that simply entering your payment information may result in an immediate charge, even if you haven’t finished the sign-up process.

Be aware that some information on their site is misleading. Certain CMOs and PROs do collect publishing royalties on your behalf, and SongTrust requires you to be registered with your local CMO in order to use their services. However, if your CMO already collects online mechanical royalties for you as a songwriter/composer (assuming you own the publishing rights), then you don’t need SongTrust at all.
Moral of the story: always check what your local CMO already offers before signing up for anything!

Additionally, make sure you exercise your right to opt out of the arbitration agreement on time (within the 30-day period) by sending an email to their legal team. If you don’t do this, you won’t be able to resolve any disputes with them in court.

Still waiting for my songs to be processed

The registration process looked simple and professional, but after completing all the steps and linking my BMI information, none of my songs have been processed or approved yet. It has been weeks with no update or response to my emails. The platform feels reliable in design but extremely slow in execution.

Songtrust lacks the resources to…

Songtrust lacks the resources to properly collect your royalties. As the company expanded, the goal was to expand and then sell, not service writers. As a result, the infrastructure and consumer support is weak at best, and criminal at worst. You will not collect what you're fully owed if you sign up for this service.

What changed?

I can only guess what changed from years ago, but the response time has gotten worse. I’ve referred multiple clients and friends to Songtrust and there is near unanimous dissatisfaction compared to before.

You sometimes take over a month to respond to a support request. If you follow-up by email with questions or requests for more info, we provide that info, and then you sometimes stop following up entirely. This leads to some minor issues taking 6-12 months to resolve.

One of the simple but burdensome issues is you creating duplicate registrations from co-writers and also removing the co-writers’ info. Three co-writers are all Songtrust members and register their new song in their accounts. Instead of merging them, the music society account shows 3 duplicate registrations, each of them inaccurate—Writer 1’s registration only shows his writer and publisher IPIs, with Songtrust inexplicably removing the IPIs for Writer 2 and 3. The same conflict occurs on the co-writers’ registrations.

Another recurring issue is that you remove the writer’s publishing company from song registrations. Instead of the music societies showing the writer’s original publisher with Songtrust as the pub admin, they only show Songtrust as both original publisher and admin. When it comes to others searching for this publisher’s catalog, these songs do not appear.

From my past experience, your support staff is trying their absolute hardest, but they’re being handicapped by whoever is in charge. I’m skeptical that anyone will ever read this, but if so, please tell whoever runs things to give your staff the resources to do their jobs. Your current customers are telling stories about their negative experiences, and in turn, are chasing away your future customers.

Songtrust is horrible

We have tried the register a song since December 2022 and it still says pending. No updates. Costumer service is horrible. Songtrust is pretty much useless if they don't complete registrations and you can't reach them either.
