If I could give it a 0 I would…I was transferring my Venmo into this account because I got it years ago for my tax refund through H and R Block….well 2 years in and I barely use it, I’m locked out of my account because I apparently overdraft Ed by 6 dollars two years ago even though I regularly deposited my Venmo into it. 2 years ago! And they are just now telling me and locked me out?!?! I now have to wait for the $300 dollars i deposited from Venmo last week. Thank goodness it was just a secondary account and not a main account. Terrible experience!

If I could give zero stars, I would. Get your money 5 days early? A JOKE!! I can't access my fund. I can't transfer my funds. Time to get a lawyer and the Better Business Bureau involved.

Very Angry with such Disgraceful Service...

Like many other customers, I also took the bait when doing my H&R Block tax refunds to receive an early return by signing up with a Spruce account. I'd already had a Spruce account opened, and had the debit card with me, so I figured this should be just fine.

On Feb. 28, my refund was issued to my account. I then found that I was unable to access my debit card on file for some reason. I contacted support and was told my account was on a list of accounts soon to be closed due to inactivity, but my name would be taken off this list since a deposit was made, and they were to re-issue a new debit card to me. I was also told that the account would remain opened.

On Mar 2, my refund was completely gone and my account was closed. I reached out to support once again, and was told my account was closed due to inactivity and that a physical check was being mailed to my address in 10-14 days.

It's Mar 23 and no check has arrived and though my refund address was different in my profile I changed it to my current address and now the check is lost. I contacted support once again and they told me my account was active again, but I would have to wait for the now lost check mailed to expire in 90 DAYS before a new check is issued.

I will be contacting the BBB, placing a fraudulent complaint on Spruce, hiring an attorney AND notifying all I know looking to open a new checking account to STAY AWAY FROM SPRUCE!

The absolute worst card service support…EVER!!!!!!!!!

The absolute worst card service support ever! My money is being stolen as we speak! I have called their support and chatted with them nothing has helped! First they shut down my card when I reported the first fraud. Sent out a fraud statement I filled out and sent back. Then SAME DAY it happens again. There was no fraud statement sent only an email that says I should fill it out when I never got it! I go to ask for it the third time today and I notice another fraudulent withdraw!!!! They obviously cannot stop any activity on the card, I have not even received the new one. They are stealing money via account information that I never passed out!!! Thank goodness I moved the remaining money I had to a different card! PLEASE beware of this company!!!!!!

Horrible company

My tax refund was deposited on 2/21/2026. Within twenty minutes of the deposit all of the funds were gone. The funds had used by to do an online transaction. I have called everyday since this happened. I was finally sent fraudulant claim papers to fill out 2/23/26. I was told this process would most likely take up to 10 days to go through. Then if they decide in my favor it will be several more days before they return the money to my account. I have never even received the debit card. Now, as of today I am locked out of the account. I am only left to guess that I am being blocked by the person who initiated the fraudulant transaction. I can now just assume that this person is just trying to stop the fraudulant claim. In my opinion this company is just a scam. Those of us that used it just sold our souls to the devil. Shame on H & R Block for partnering with this company.

If I could I would never use this bank again

This is the 2nd time I have had a problem and I was not notified regarding a random charge back so by the time my refund check is deposited they have locked my account and will not let me speak to anyone other than customer service who I can barely understand. 3 days I will lose my power because I can't pay my bills and I am most likely going to be starving by the time it's fixed if I would have been notified of the account holder I wouldn't have let my money go to this account

Worst checking account ever!

I really wish I could rate this with no stars. I deposited my check on the 4th and they still have not released my money into my account. I called and spoke to customer service and was informed they would not release it until the 10th. I have never in my life had a bank hold my check for this long for no reason. As soon as my fund clear I will be closing this account worst checking account I have ever had!

NEVER use this bank

NEVER use this bank. My account has had a temporary hold on it for 5 days with no notice. When all my bills started to decline I called them. Said the fraud department would be in touch. Sent me a link to verify my identity and I did it right away. I call everyday and nobody will help me. So now I have all kinds of late fees and my car insurance was cancelled due to non payment they declined. I have over $1000 in my account that I can’t get. I am unable to get gas or buy food. This is ruining my life and they don’t care. Horrible experience. I’m about to have a mental breakdown

Spruce Banking is about to be sued for…

Spruce Banking is about to be sued for stealing direct deposit funds.. They have my debit card locked and my direct deposit from payroll is on it.. I have to pay my electric bill and can not because Spruce has my card locked or restricted... I have 2 infants in my home and I demand my account unlocked so I can pay my bill....

They're holding my money hostage and sent me a check that is uncatchable because it got wet. I requested a New check. They won't even consider sending me a new One unless I jump through endless hoops I Have a positive balance That they have not I have been waiting for a the other check. That's not associated with the first one.
I Have been waiting over a month. I have talked to them multiple times called customer service emailed and cried by eyes out and for some stupid reason won't let me transfer the money out. Because they canceled my account

Horrible

Horrible! Scam! I opened an account; received $1400 in tax money and spent 500 on various items. The next day, they froze my account and offered no explanation; I called them 4X in 3 weeks; they sent me a link to something called SAAS Onboarding which would not load...in fact, I stood over my ID for 30 minutes waiting for this bogus app to load, never did and nobody from the company called me back ever!

Absolutely terrible actually sickening!

This company/ banking is absolutely the worst! They need a class action lawsuit! They hold your money hostage and restrict your card for "fraudulent or suspicious activity". No other reason to restrict my account and couldn't tell me any reasons! Normal banking companies ask if you made certain purchases and have ypu prove your identity and then lift the restrictions! I've proved my damn identity 2 times!!!!! To say my husband and I are angry is an understatement! Our taxes return is on it for God's sake!

Will Hold Your Money Hostage

This bank has been holding my money hostage for over a week stating they see fraudulent activity on the account. Even though it's the same transactions every 2 weeks. 1st they told me 3-5 business days for the Escalations team to handle my case, now because they are behind they're telling me it will be an additional 5-7 business days. You can't speak to anyone in the escalations department. All they have is empty apologies. Now thanks to Spruce my bills are behind and I have no way to get groceries. I would find another institution to bank with

Do not use Spruce

Do not use Spruce! I had several fraudulent charges one month and they did credit the money back. The very next month the same thing happened. I received a call from someone saying they were from Spruce and that they had noticed suspicious activity on my account. My our bank does this so I didn’t think anything about it.
I verified the information they had and the next thing I know I tried to use the debit card, knowing there was money not only in checking but savings, it was declined. So I check my account and more fraudulent charges. This time though whoever did the transactions not only used the money in my checking but Spruce decided the transfer all the money I had in savings to checking to cover the rest of the charges.
When decided to open a Spruce account I informed them I didn’t want that service, where it will move money out of savings if you don’t have enough in checking. It also has never let me do this. I opened the accounts as a back up due to I travel a lot for my job.
Now they closed my account without my knowledge. I had quite a bit of money in the account due to a portion of my pay check goes into this account. I was informed I would get a check for the money that was still in the account and never received anything.
If you want to lose your hard earned money choose Spruce. I will never bank with Spruce again or anyone affiliated with them. Don’t fall for the scam.

I wish I could give a negative star review. I am writing this to warn others so the same doesn't happen to you. For 30 days spruce has known my account had been hacked by an identity thief. Someone changed my email address i was locked out so I notified spruce to fix it, 30 days of me calling daily nothing was being done, 31 days a few days before my tax refund should hit, i get a call from what my caller id says is H&R block, lady says she is from h&r block spruce escalation department. I give her the information she asked for to verify my identity. Says everything should be fixed within the next few days. Well that same night someone was able to change my mailing address and order a new debit card with use of a digital one until they receive the new one. Strange coincidence right. I call spruce ask them Wtf. I had to force the address that it was changed to out of them. No reason given as to why or how they allowed someone to call and change this kind of information since i should of been flagged for the email being changed. They say they closed my account but i called the next day to see if it was and it seemed to be open still. They wouldn't provide me with a letter of account closer for proof. H&r block identity shield is useless they cant do anything but transfer me to spruce. The whole thing has made me feel like the out of country out sourcing is for the purpose of fraudulent transactions like mine. I dont know how my information would of gotten out especially receiving the call about the issue with my account. Its absolutely crazy I've been sick from this and its still not over have to wait for h&r. block to mail my return now. Don't use spruce or h&r block.

Only Merchant’s Get Full Protection

Imagine this: I get a notification that a car rental company is charging my card, and multiple transactions totaling over $3,000 are pending. Thankfully, I always keep my debit card locked as a precaution, and I didn’t even have much money in that account at the time. To my shock, however, a $1,750 transaction was approved.

Here’s where it gets even worse: I’ve been denied at places like McDonald’s if I’m even a dollar short. But somehow, Spruce allowed this massive unauthorized charge to go through. When I contacted them, they claimed certain merchants can “force the claim” and withdraw funds immediately.

I filed a fraud dispute and took it upon myself to investigate. I obtained documentation directly from the rental company and sent it to Spruce. After all that effort, I was simply told I might possibly receive provisional credit—no guarantees.

The bottom line? Your money is not safe with Spruce. If your funds are stolen, not only will they fail to protect you, but the resolution process will drag on for weeks, leaving you financially stranded.

I am beyond disappointed. Do not trust this company. Protect yourself and your hard-earned money by banking elsewhere.
