Square is actively withholding my hard earned money with absolutely zero legal or contractual justification.
After deactivating my account, they forced me to wait out their mandatory holding period to cover potential chargebacks. I compiled, waited patiently, and finally received an official email from square stating that the witholding period had expired and that my funds were cleared to transfer.
However, when i went to withdraw my balance, the funds were still completely suspended.
It has now been well past the time they legally and contractually agreed to release my money. Keeping a business's funds after your own self imposed holding period has ended is predatory and unacceptable.

Though I would've preferred to have a live call, the Chat Messaging worked very well. They answered my questions and even gave guidelines and tips. I'm very satisfied.

1 Star — Avoid Square
Square closed my account without giving me a clear reason. I had zero chargebacks and zero disputes, yet they decided to hold my funds for 30 days.
What made the situation even more frustrating was that they said the funds were released on Saturday, but because it was the weekend, I was told I had to wait until the next business day to actually receive them.
This experience has been extremely frustrating and has made me lose trust in Square. Businesses depend on reliable access to their money. I strongly recommend considering other payment processors before using Square.

Hey Square your new update sucks. I don’t know who had the bright idea to leave a tip before running customers card. Please change it back to tipping after running the card. It’s costing us tips by forcing them to pre tip

It is really hard to get any sort of support or help from square. I have been trying to deal with an issue with receiving my funds for a week now and I have not been able to speak with a human .

I’m extremely disappointed with how Square handled my new business account.
I opened the account for my legitimate IT services business and cooperated with every verification request they sent me. I provided my government ID, EIN documentation, California LLC documents, reseller permit, business information, invoices, public business profiles, and linked my business bank account. I even offered to provide additional invoices and my City of Oakland business license.
After all of that, Square restricted and then closed my account while there were still business funds involved.
What makes this even more frustrating is that their representatives keep telling me that Square supposedly sent me emails regarding the account and the review process. I have repeatedly explained that I DID NOT receive those emails. I checked my inbox and spam, and I am being told about communications that never reached me.
Instead of clearly telling me what the actual concern was or what specific documentation was missing, I kept getting additional verification requests even after submitting substantial proof that this is a real business.
I have been self-employed providing IT and technology services and recently formed Low-IP, LLC to formalize and grow the business. Before Square, many customers paid by cash or Zelle. I was trying to move to professional card processing, automated invoicing, and recurring memberships.
I understand that payment processors have compliance and fraud-prevention requirements. What I do not understand is closing a legitimate business account after the owner fully cooperates, while providing little explanation and repeatedly referring to emails the customer says were never received.
I am requesting that Square properly review this situation, explain exactly why the account was closed, provide proof or records of the emails they claim were sent, and promptly resolve any funds still being held.

NIGHTMARE SQUARE.... SUUUUUCKS!!!!! The absolute worst 3rd party processing system around. Complete total piece of poop!!! Put thousands on hold, provided documentation from our company as well as from the payee to legitimize the transaction, but to no avail. Closed my account and STILL holding thousands of dollars for a minimum of 90 days that can turn into an even longer hold at their discretion. If you want a gangster, don't give-a-F, 3rd party payment processing system with horrible, rude, hang-up / switch you to another rep without telling you, customer service... SQUARE is it!!! Once your account is closed, you can no longer speak to anyone. The only communication is via chat. All phones call connect you to a voice system. Control and complete disregard in capital letters. NIGHTMARE SQUARE BEWARE!!!

I have been a Square customer for over 15 years, but they have now blown up the relationship. My account was suspended by what appears to be an automated system for doing nothing out of the ordinary, just attempting to move some Bitcoin from their platform to one of my other wallets, which I have done multiple times. As a result, they have not only suspended access to my Bitcoin, but my entire account. My business is now largely decapitated, and despite doing this to me on a weekend, they provide zero help and expect me to wait until Monday, and then give them even more time to even look into this. Square: you have competition, we do not need you in particular and do not have to stand for this sort of abuse. This review is just the start of what I am going to do (enjoy the CFPB complaint that I have already filed, too).

I am writing to report Square’s account recovery process and their refusal to accept legal verification. After losing access to the email address tied to my account, I contacted customer support to restore access.
To prove ownership, I offered to present valid, government-issued documentation, including my state photo ID and Social Security card. Support flatly refused, stating they only recognize access to the original email address.
Withholding account access and funds while refusing to verify identity through official legal identification is completely improper. Because Square refuses to provide a reasonable alternative for identity verification, I am submitting this formal complaint and taking steps to pursue legal action and regulatory intervention.

Long-Time Square Customer — $40,000+ Held for 120 Days
I had an extremely frustrating and damaging experience with Square.
I had been a Square customer since 2018, with years of transaction history through their platform. I had processed many transactions over the years, including a transaction of approximately $46,000 in November, without this type of issue.
Despite that established history, Square decided to hold over $40,000 of my money for 120 days after I processed a legitimate, in-person credit card payment from a customer. The customer physically tapped their card to make the payment for legitimate remodeling services.
What makes this especially difficult to understand is that Square already had years of history with my business. I wasn't a brand-new merchant suddenly processing my first large transaction. I was an established customer with a track record on their platform.
I understand that payment processors have to manage risk and occasionally review transactions. In the past, Square sometimes held my funds for a few extra days while conducting reviews, and although inconvenient, I understood that. Holding more than $40,000 for 120 days is an entirely different situation.
As a small business owner, cash flow is critical. That money is used to pay employees, subcontractors, suppliers, materials, and other expenses necessary to keep projects moving. Having such a significant amount of legitimate business funds inaccessible for months placed an enormous and unnecessary burden on my company.
Throughout the process, I repeatedly contacted Square looking for answers and a resolution. Instead, I received generic responses and very little meaningful information about why such an extreme hold was necessary.
After being a customer since 2018 and establishing years of transaction history with Square, I expected much better treatment, communication, and transparency.
This experience completely destroyed my trust in Square.
If you own a small business and occasionally process large credit card transactions, I strongly encourage you to understand Square's hold and reserve policies before trusting them with a significant payment. Your business may depend on having access to those funds.
After this experience, I cannot recommend Square to other business owners, and I will be taking my payment processing business elsewhere.

Deactivated my account without any reason or notice. They froze my funds and told me it would take 90 days to get my money. Such a scam. Don't use them.

Customer service give u the wrong answers to how to handle a canceled dispute. Then when caught in the mistake blame it on you. Tell u that u have to wait 1 to 5 days to talk with a manager. Make u wait extended times for money that you have proved are not disputed

Don't link square to your business until you try the process of payments and payout to make sure that you will not be screwed up and your money will be held affecting your business

This platform deactivated my account and is currently holding $8,573 of my funds. It has been over 4 months, and they have completely failed to release my money or give me clear timeline.
Holding a user's payput for this long without valid justification or clear communication is completely unacceptable and feels illegal. I have tried reaching out to customer support multiple times, but only receive generic, automated responses.
If you are a business owner beware. They can and will freeze your livelihood without warning. I demand the immediate release of my funds. If this is not resolved immediately, I will be forced to escalate this to the BBB, consumer protection agencies, and legal counsel.

Very disappointed with Square. I paid monthly fees expecting support when I needed it most, but I felt completely let down. A customer disputed payment after I had already completed the service, and I felt like Square did very little to help me or fairly review my evidence. Losing the full payment was frustrating, and the customer service experience did not meet my expectations. Because of my experience, I have decided to stop using Square and switch to another payment processor." Hope you're able to sort this out with your bank tomorrow, and find a payment service that's a better fit.

We contacted square about a double charge to one of our clients. They would or could not tell us how this happened. They told us that for the inconvenience they would apply $1000.00 to our account to cover processing fees; however, they only covered the processing fees of the first $1000.00 that we processed. When we called customer support, they gave us the run around, said that we could not speak with a supervisor because our request to do so was declined. We were advised to do all communications via email, even though we had them on the phone. They are not helpful at all and we are dropping square for a another credit card processing company. Consumer beware!!!
