Car rented in Funchal Madeira
We rented a Car in Funchal Madeira and were asked to pay a full tank of gasoline in advance. They told us that we would benefit because the gasconsumption of the car would be high due to the hills and steep roads.
We got also a reduction of 10% on the price for gasoline.
We drove 350K in three days and had an average of 6.2l per 100km.
So we payed almost 2,7€ per liter for euro98 gasoline!

The Sacramento Airport Branch is Horrifically Bad
This is the worst rental car experience I've ever had, and I travel a lot. I reserved a car in Sacramento for 1:00 p.m. and arrived a few minutes later. The girl who helped me at the counter was slow, chatting about a lunch break with a coworker for several minutes while holding my driver's license and credit card until I had to ask her to please process my car. She was rude and absolutely acted like she did not give a damn.
When she was finally finished, she told me to step aside and wait, and they would call my name because they're going to drive the car to me. Great. What she didn't tell me is that they didn't have any cars, and they were waiting for cars to come in that they were then washing and cleaning quickly and bringing up to the counter. I only found that out the 4th time I approached the counter because the other three times they lied to me.
After 20 minutes, I complained, and they told me there were 7 people ahead of me waiting for their cars but they still didn't tell me they didn't have any cars. I finally had to ask for the manager, who told me because of a snowstorm in Tahoe they didn't have any cars and that the wait was about an hour. The girl who originally helped me then lied and told her manager she had told me that originally. BS.
I finally decided that I needed to be a squeaky wheel to make my appointment that I had just flown all the way across the country for, and not sit there like a sheep waiting to be slaughtered. I demanded the next car, and within 5 minutes I had a freshly washed, upgraded Jeep.
I told them I will never rent from them again, and I advise you to stay away from this company or, at least, stay away from the Sacramento airport branch if you want good and honest service. Really pathetic.
NEVER buy the FUEL PURCHASE OPTION
We rented a vehicle from Chicago O'Hare International Airport. We had prebooked and paid on Rentalcars.com. The check out took more than an hour and then to leave the actual building took another 30 minutes as they did not have staff to man the exit gates. The clerk was very pushy and told us that if we purchased the FUEL PURCHASE OPTION - that we would only be charged for the actual fuel that hey had to replace. Unfortunately this is not true. We only found that out when we queried why we weren't refunded as we returned the vehicle full.
This is what is in the fine print "Fuel Purchase Option. Fuel purchased in advance at Dollar at time of rental. No refund for unused fuel if option is selected."

One of the worst car rental companies out there. Their terms and conditions are more important to them than customer satisfaction. We wanted to rent a car and accidentally selected the wrong insurance. We neither received the car nor a refund of the rental price. Absolutely incomprehensible. Never rent a car from them
Disgraceful Service and Unjust Charges - Do Not Use Dollar Thrifty at Frankfurt Airport
I am absolutely appalled by the disgraceful service I received from Dollar Thrifty at Frankfurt Airport. They erroneously charged me 300 euros for supposedly returning a car without petrol, despite the fact that the car was FULL and reviewed by their own staff onsite.
Despite providing receipts and multiple emails complaining about this blatant error, Dollar Thrifty has refused to remove the unjust charges or even acknowledge their mistake. Their lack of accountability and customer service is utterly unacceptable.
This company’s behavior is nothing short of a scam. Save yourself the headache and avoid Dollar Thrifty at all costs. They are a disgrace to the car rental industry.

After pre booking our minivan, flying to LAX 11hours from the UK waiting 1hr to queue up to sort rental paperwork then having to wait an extra 4hours for our car to be available with numerous customers in the same situation. None of the staff have any idea what’s going on, shouting at customers, giving no indication on how long to wait, saying they have no cars available, my kids asleep on the floor having been awake for 24 hours.
Worst experience of car rental I have ever had. Absolute carnage. When we finally got our car it was dirty and not cleaned.

Sarajevo, deposit not returned
I rented a car in Sarajevo airport. The car had several scratches which were noted. It also had an error message for tire pressure that the staff member told me to simply ignore. In my naivity I did not have that noted in the papers.
I needed to return the car before the office opened, and could not go through the car with a staff member for that reason.
I did not receive any communication from the agency by email confirming the car was returned.
After 2 weeks I could see that apporximately 50% of the deposit had not been returned to my credit card.
Many emails later I finally got a response. The agency claimed that the error message was caused by me and that the car had damages to the bumper, tires and undercarriage.
I had taken photos of the car before returning it, and no such damages are visible.

Atlanta international Airport: Waited 2 hours for a rental that was reserved two weeks before scheduled pickup date. After standing in line for 1 hour, customer service was rude, then waited 1 hour to get the car.

Absolutely blatant disrespectful treatment of clients. Pathetic and UNSAFE product, unhelpful staff, horrible experience all-round.
This company shows no morals whatsoever, happily take your money, do not care to hear their client’s complaints, and refuse to escalate issues to their executive team. Full of promises that they will do the right thing over the phone, but in writing the attitude is dismissive, like I was wating their precious time for them taking my money to fix their poor product!
I am going out of my way to ensure that as many people as possible don’t have to receive the same shocking treatment I did from this hopeless and rude company.
I was stranded after one of their vehicles had a faulty battery – I had to make a plan to get back to the airport, more than 2 hours away from where I broke down. What if I broke down in a particularly dangerous area? What if it was dark and I was by myself?
After buying a brand-new car battery in a desperate attempt to make my flight to get back to my family, Thrifty has consistently refused to pay me back for the battery. All this after their so-called roadside assist was not able to help me.
Disgusting pathetic service, zero regard for their clients. And have the cheek to blow me off, and get a free battery worth over R1000, after giving me dismal service and an unsafe product.
I highly recommend not even engaging with this shockingly bad company.
Rental Car Service at MCO Airport/ Dollar Rental
I rented a vehicle at the Florida Airport. I did not receive a copy of the rental agreement, only ticket stubs showing that I rented a car and the pertinent information. I was unfamiliar with the Florida Toll system and it certainly was not explained to me. I returned home to find that Dollar had charged a total of $79.92 in administrative fees for unpaid tolls in the amount of $14.75, making a total of $94.67 due. The Florida Turnpike indicates that they will take a picture of your license and you will billed that way. What a surprise to find the additional fee by the car company. The renters agreement needs to be given at the time of payment at the airport. And the agents need to explain the policy regarding toll collection. Very disappointed in the company.

Following my own experience, it has come to my attention that Dollar Thrifty seem to regularly not pay out excess fees.
And when they do so, take an inordinate amount of time. I am interested in hearing from you if you have had a similar experience for an article. I write features for South African and European media. Google search me and please contact (Trustpilot deletes any reviews with such details in them:).
My Story:
I used to use Dollar Thrifty regularly. On 28th August 2017 I had an accident. Or rather a foreign tourist, himself in a rental came the wrong way round a roundabout in Sea Point and hit me, writing off the vehicle.
To get my excess refunded I followed procedure to a T. The police report I obtained even stated the accident was the other driver's fault.
It has been four years and my R6000 was never refunded.
What is worse though is that it seems to be company policy not to pay out where possible.
In my case, I found it disturbing that the company's claims department communicated with me kindly until the three year limit when consumer debt lapses and becomes prescribed (when by law it is written off) and then went silent.
It is partly my mistake. I was ill-informed that because of covid I thought that civil courts had been suspended and therefore the time period for prescription had been extended.
The process though is easy AND FREE. As the debt less than R15,000 it is prosecuted in person in small claims court. I would be happy to assist you in return for hearing your similar harrowing stories

booked a car from Belgrade Serbia on 27th July 2021. They blocked 8435 RSD for deposit and said it will be released in 3 days upon returning the car. Its been more than a month now and the deposit has not been reversed. There is no reply for the repeated emails sent. Please be honest in your dealings and release the deposit money at the earliest. If you don't respond i will log a dispute with Mastercard.
