I've been using TaxCalc for many years, sometimes doing as many as four tax returns for various family members each year. The user interface is a little dated and possibly confusing for new users, but... See more

Tax Calc is a great software product
Tax Calc is a really easy to use product, where client information can be easily imported for efficiency, and an integrative tax programme.
What really helped my business was the practice management module where I could keep track of the status of tax returns and which ones still needed to be filed.
FANTASTIC!!!!
I have been using Taxcalc for over 10 years and still rate it as the best and easiest to use software for preparing and filing Tax Returns.
Well done on maintaining the quality and service over the whole period that I have used the product.

Taxcalc is the best integrated accounts…
Taxcalc is the best integrated accounts and tax platform on the market. They make filing self assessment and corporation tax returns a breeze. Their customer service is amazing and respond to queries quickly. Their pricing is also very competitive. Can't recommend highly enough!

Simple but effective and up to date.
We moved recently from BTC to Taxcalc only to be let down by server downtime.
We moved from BTC software to Taxcalc few months ago. We use cloudconnect for the database. In the past one month alone, we have two server downtime as a result we incur losses in terms of staff costs. When we were with BTC for more than 10 years, we never had a single downtime. This downtime is really frustrating during our busy period. It looks like we have made a huge mistake!

Great
I've been using TaxCalc for over twenty years to produce personal tax returns without any problems at all. I would thoroughly recommend it.
Loyalty and customer service
I have been a customer for some years and have now retired. I needed a small favour for which I would have paid. However they insisted on charging me full price for a product I did not need and would not use. Loyalty and customer service are not important to them.
Cheap Self Assessment software, but not especially cheerful
This review is specifically for the Individual Self Assessment software which currently costs £36.
I picked this up because HMRC said I couldn't use the online self-assessment, and because it was cheap with a good review. Positives are that the software is a cheap one-off price, and it's not bloated - it focuses solely on completing your self-assessment form and submitting it electronically to HMRC, which is all I needed from it.
However, although the software looks modern enough, the whole thing feels a bit dated and foreboding. I think if you are providing an alternative to the well-designed GOV UK/HMRC self assessment form, it needs to do things a bit differently - be more friendly, more appreciative of weird niche cases, provide clearer advice, do more calculations for you, generally be more helpful.
You know, where HMRC say "If you are resident under terms of article GP/1223 and wish to claim tax-deductible ground-rent allowance on a seafarer's basis, tick here", I would like software that gently explains all that and gives me an easy way to answer that question.
I felt like this software and the SimpleStep interface did not really do this. Where there is advice, it is just taken from HMRC, or a rewording of HMRC's advice which, of course, can be as clear as mud. The forms and boxes are reordered, which sometimes is clearer, but often causes more confusion when trying to work out which SimpleStep page/box corresponds to the "official" HMRC form/box.
The interface also commits a few unforgivable UI/UX sins. For example, I very nearly missed pages 2 and 3 of a vital Helpsheet form because there is nothing at all to indicate that the wizard has 3 pages, and nothing to warn you that you have missed pages 2 and 3. There is a "Close" button (that rather dangerously does not automatically attach the form to your return) and "Prev/Next Step" buttons (which usually take you to the next step, but on wizards, take you to the next (unadvertised) page).
This is basic UI stuff and ironically something that GOV UK does very well with modern UX standards.
The whole design of TaxCalc feels very 2005. After using TaxCalc, I have had a look at some of their web-based competitors and they have come up with better, clearer ways to do this which, to be honest, I wish I had used. For example, one competitor includes little notes like "Since you said you are X, you probably want to answer "No" here as you do not qualify" which feels really helpful and again, is something TaxCalc doesn't really do.
Eventually I was spending too much time doing calculations in spreadsheets and reading HMRC advice and eventually gave up on using the SimpleStep interface completely. I suspect if I had continued using SimpleStep it would have led me down the wrong route. I got everything done eventually and my return seems to have been submitted successfully, but I feel like really all I got from my £36 was the ability to submit the form electronically rather than on paper.
Excellent
Excellent - £90 inc VAT for a partnership and up to 6 self-assessment tax returns.
My only issue is that because it was so easy to do, I have to wait until the next tax year starts tomorrow before I can actually submit it to HMRC lol.
It saves me £300/year compared to what my accountant wanted to charge.
Training and Rollout
Training and Rollout
We have just completed an intense week long training on TaxCalc, expertly provided by Nick. Nick really knows his stuff and his previous career in accountancy helped to tailor the set up of our software to exactly what we needed.
We are just at the beginning of our TaxCalc journey and excited to really get stuck into the day to day use of it.
So far though its been a great service from Dani, Nick and Dan who have all handled part of our onboarding.

The TaxCalc software is a great addition to my app stack and one that I wouldn't now be without. It was so reliable throughout the tax season and didn't ever let me down. The support is great and I have total confidence in the product.

The price is getting a bit out of touch due to new competitive software in the market.
Year end
Taxcalc was, as usual, able to cope with the flood of last minute returns and answer questions and solve problems
