Took my money for nothing in return.

After doing 99% of the course work (which was still being graded up until the end) and having already completed my teaching internship, I found my program shutdown without warning. Previously, I had messaged Nyla asking for an explicit time I needed to have the work done, but she never responded. The only person I've been able to contact has been of no help and I am essentially out the 5 grand the course cost.

The company will do anything to get you to sign, but don't expect them to go out of their way to help you when they fail.

I genuinely wish I'd never heard of this organization.

Update 1: I have sent three emails over the past month and after finally receiving a response (Jan 9) and telling them who I was, they have yet to respond. Of course their email states they’ll respond in 2-3 days.

Scam alert

Mid August of last year, I signed up with the University of Toronto to complete an online TEFL certification with them, in partnership with Teach Away. I was given a year to complete the online certificate.

Without warning any of the students this year, both parties cancelled the program and I've been left in the lurch.

When contacted via email, the University of Toronto claims it is not responsible - that the legalese protects them from any non-completion of the course - and Teach Away / Pluribus Technologies has not replied to any of my emails.

I'll have paid about $1,255.80 for this course, these companies have not delivered what they promised when they promised, and I'm probably not alone.

I am informing the local authorities, contacting news media, and will take legal action, as necessary.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

We're truly sorry to hear about your experience and completely understand how frustrating this situation has been.

Earlier this year, the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto assumed full ownership and operation of the OISE TEFL course. As a result, the course is now fully managed by OISE, and Teach Away is no longer involved in its delivery or administration.

That said, we did respond to your inquiry with details about the transition and next steps. As a gesture of goodwill, we've also offered complimentary access to our own TEFL course, including matching any progress you've completed in the original program, so you can continue working toward your goals without starting over.

Again, we are sorry for any disruption you have faced, and we want to support your next steps in any way that is within our control.

Took payment for a TEFL course, and deleted the course when I reached 100% completion after 110 hours spent

This "firm" offered a TEFL course, advertised as offered by a trustworthy Canadian university. There were no issues with payment and access to the content. However, upon 100% completion of the course of my certificate I suddenly get logged out mid-session as I am completing my final module. The password no longer works, and I receive the email that the course is "no longer being offered through Teach Away" and you are "welcome to take this other course from another university".

There was no warning at any moment that the course would be getting shutdown, and I spent 110 full hours completing the assignments and modules; all wasted since the 100% progress was deleted entirely.

Besides this, they advertised their course prices in CAD dollars on the Google search page, meanwhile the payment and prices inside the website we shown USD dollars (the website has been shutdown, but Wayback Machine will show this), effectively a 40% price markup.

Hi JB,

We completely understand how upsetting this must be, especially after you put time and effort into completing your course.

The OISE TEFL program was not included in the recent sale of Teach Away’s business, which means we do not have access to student records, the course platform, or any related payments.

That said, you may still be able to request a printed certificate by contacting the University of Toronto’s OISE Continuing and Professional Learning division directly. They’re in the best position to assist you:

OISE Continuing and Professional Learning: oise.cpl@utoronto.ca

We know this isn’t the outcome you were hoping for, and we’re truly sorry for the disruption.

Semi-transparent schemes

The course was amazing. I enjoyed every single part of it. I had had a couple of incidents in my life which kept me from completing me the course on time. Teachaway did a fantastic job of extending the course for me. For that I would like to thank them. I really appreciate the effort.

However, my recent experience with them when they promised to send me a physical certificate on time more or less and failed to do so frustrated me a lot and caused me a lot of discomfort. Ms. Nyla knowing that there was a strike in Canada didn't inform me that the certificate wouldn't be sent on a date as expected. When I asked her why she didn't inform me about it, became inappropriately rude in the conversation trying to make it about me, instead of apologizing. Then, her colleague Shannon did the sam, trying to make the situation about me. I paid a lot of money for this course. I lost a potential job as a result of them not meeting the deadlines.
Now, the platform of theirs for applying for jobs is tricky for non-natives. They allow potential employers that stick to discriminatory practices to post teaching positions for which you can't apply by default simply because you are a non-native and Teachaway don't mention this. As soon as you start applying for a job, it says you can't do so. Try applying for some other jobs which is pathetic. Also, dear non-natives, Teachaway doesn't mention that online certificates even from their reputable company aren't recognized or accepted in most Middle Eastern countries, in countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, etc. And to make things worse, if you are a non-native, no top tier K12 school will care about this certificate regardless of what reputation Teachaway or the University of Toronto might have.
The bottom line is, it is yet another "sales factory" which does their best to sell you the course. But they will not inform you about the possible outcomes for you, dear non-natives. FYI: in the Middle East, in the vast majority of cases especially at language centers they will pay you by the passport you hold. They have some salary scale if you are a non-native. And our "esteemed educational companies like Teachaway" didn't care about mentioning this. So, now that I have this particular certificate, it's only good for pinning it to the wall.

BEWARE - ITALY

My experience working with with an 'international' language school in the South of Italy was, unfortunately, extremely disappointing. Throughout my time there, I encountered several serious issues that I believe prospective staff should be aware of before accepting a position.

Firstly, salary payments were withheld without clear explanations or timelines. It became an ongoing concern, full salary was not provided. Additionally, there was a frequent expectation to work beyond the hours agreed upon in the contract, which was both exhausting and unfair, particularly without adequate compensation.

Moreover, the school was not transparent about the significant amount of travel required. The constant travel, which was never clearly disclosed during the hiring process, led to even longer workdays and added stress.

Overall, the lack of transparency and fairness in their treatment of staff made this an unpleasant experience.

We are sorry to hear about the challenges you faced while working with the school in Italy. At Teach Away, we act as a third-party job board, connecting educators with opportunities worldwide. While we strive to provide accurate job listings for our network, we do not have direct control over schools or their working conditions. With that said, we take any candidate complaints about any schools partnering with us seriously and if you could forward this to info@teachaway.com, our team will investigate further and escalate if required.

This company Teach Away

This company Teach Away, has horrible customer service and appears to be run by one person. I signed up for a course, have one year to complete it, do not like it and will not be taking it. I asked to stop payments with Affirm who paid Teach Away in full for the course. Affirm stated I had to speak to Teach Away to get a refund. Teach Away will not provide any sort of cancellation. I do not want a refund. I will take a loss. I simply do not want to pay more for something I do not care to study online. This happened several months ago. Still no resolution.

We understand that you enrolled in the TEFL course on March 15, 2024, and initially requested a refund on April 28, 2024. However, we ultimately issued a full refund on September 17, 2024.

We apologize for any frustration this process may have caused and appreciate your patience. Wishing you all the best!

One of the better ones....

I've used a fair few recruiters in my time and I think Teach Away is great, I got both my current role - teaching in Abu Dhabi and my last role in China through Teach Away.

It's a super easy process, no different to Linkedin where you can apply without the usual
rigmarole some of the other agencies have.

Surprised to see the below reviews but yet again never sure what are 'fake' reviews and what aren't these days....

Do Not Ever Use This Site!!!

I strongly recommend against registering with Teach Away. You'll never be able to delete your account. They do not give the option to un-register, which in and of itself is telling.

They either don't control or monitor the jobs that are posted on their site or simply don't care if there's a false ad posted. I say this from personal experience. There was a government job posting about an English translator. It included a link to the government site, but it was an expired ad of over a year. I made the mistake of hitting the "apply" button, before seeing the expiry date of the ad. This means that whoever had posted the ad got access to all of my information, including my reference letters, diploma, transcripts, etc (Teach Away encourages you to post all the documents that you have to increase your chances of employment).

After seeing the expiry date I tried to delete my account, but there was no option to do that, so I deleted all my documents. It may have been too late to do it, but I did it anyway. I also contacted the team to inform and warn them of this false ad. Instead of reading my concern and trying to investigate, I got a quick reply where they were defensive and even accused me of being giving false information. I tried to explain again the situation and I received a very rude response, so I stopped writing back.

In that ad, there was a name and contact email listed (government employee and email address for that job posting). I had sent an email to that person and received a response back a week after I had received the last email from Teach Away. The person said that the ad was over a year old and that she didn't know how it had gotten posted on Teach Away website. I would've forwarded that email to Teach Away to prove what I had been trying to communicate to them, however, after the very rude response that I had received I did not want to do anything with them.

If there was a rating of 0/5, I would give them 0.

I can't even give any names, because at Teach Away nothing is personalized. They hide behind the screen. You only get a "Teach Away Team" sign off at the bottom of the messages that you receive, so you never know who you are speaking to.

Teach Away is not recommended for teachers or schools. Too much marketing with little feedback or communication other than newsletter marketing.
