Welcoming, thoughtful and scientific class – highly recommend it!
Like most anxious first-time West London mums, I wanted to do an antenatal course to assert some control over the exciting/terrifying prospect of birth. There is so much (bad) advice out there and it can feel overwhelming, but Bump Class was fantastic – both extremely informative and a great way to meet people. I'm now 8 months into motherhood and feel continually impressed with the course.
It meets in a lovely woman's home, so it feels welcoming and relaxed. For almost every class there were guest speakers, which meant we were hearing directly from the experts (midwives, doctors, lactation consultants). It covers everything: gearing up for birth, labour and birth itself, the immediate moments after, postpartum generally, and ongoing things like which kit is best, and how to get the right kind of support in London. It's accessibly scientific, and most importantly not part of the cult of 'breathe the baby out, C sections are the devil, breastfeed till they're in reception'. We talked about a range of options without judgment and I felt like I had a realistic understanding of how first births can go. The kit list is also pretty much flawless and took the guesswork out of the out-of-control baby things market.
The community is a lifeline – it's reassuring to chat with people who are going through what you're going through at the same time. My group still stay in touch and do things in the neighbourhood. I also did the First Aid course and my husband joined me for parents' night, both of which were well worth doing!
While I don't think you can ever feel truly prepared for a baby, Bump Class got me as close as I could get.
