Awful experience and put me off having another pet!

I want to share my experience so other pet owners can make an informed decision.

On Friday 24th October 2025, my dog Jeffrey was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease. The vet we saw, Luke, advised that with renal food and supplements, his condition could potentially be improved to stage 1 or 2, and that we could still have months or even years with him. Based on this, I immediately ordered the recommended food and treatment, believing there was a realistic chance to manage his condition.

However, by Tuesday 28th October, Jeffrey had significantly deteriorated—he was lethargic, not eating, and not even able to go for a walk. I contacted the practice, and he was admitted and placed on a drip overnight.

That evening, I visited him and was very concerned to learn that there would be no staff present overnight, apart from a nurse briefly checking in. This was not made clear to me beforehand. Given his condition, I did not feel comfortable with him being left unattended for long periods. I was told I could transfer him to a pet hospital for overnight care, but at a cost of around £1500 per night, which put me in a very difficult position.

The following day, I discovered that Jeffrey had injured his nose while in the kennel. I do not accept the explanation given that this was caused by bedding, as the injury appeared consistent with him trying to escape under the kennel bars.

We were charged approximately £200–£300 per day for his care. After speaking with another veterinary practice, I was told that, given how advanced his condition was, euthanasia should have been considered sooner, and that prolonged drip treatment may have unnecessarily extended his suffering.

Despite this, I felt pressured to continue treatment, and when I questioned stopping the drip, I was made to feel guilty about that decision.

On Thursday, I made the heartbreaking decision to have Jeffrey put to sleep.

In hindsight, I feel that the initial prognosis given to me was overly optimistic and may have influenced decisions that prolonged my dog’s suffering and increased costs. I also believe I should have been clearly informed about the level of overnight supervision before agreeing to hospitalisation.

I would urge other pet owners to ask detailed questions about prognosis, treatment expectations, and overnight care arrangements before proceeding.

A positive, caring experience with a very knowledgeable vet

We visited the Shrewsbury branch today and had such a positive experience.
The reception staff were lovely and friendly, and made a fuss of our two dogs.
We had a consultation with James and he was just amazing.
We had transferred from another vet, following a stressful experience and poor service at the most emotional of times when our one dog had been diagnosed with cancer.
The experience today was completely different.
Test results were carefully explained and treatment options discussed. James agreed a follow-up call with us in a couple of days to see how our dog was responding to treatment and to give us a chance to decide how to next proceed.
It was so reassuring to receive clear guidance and to feel like this vets practice genuinely cared, rather than it all being about making money, like our previous vet!
I would highly recommend😊

I highly recommend theMarket Town Veterinary Surgery. Whenever we have needed support with any medical emergency for our dogs the whole team have ‘gone the extra mile’; treating the dogs with professional expertise and supporting us emotionally, through some difficult decisions.
They are an independent practice and this shines through their work… they care for the animals they treat. We trust them with our precious pets and are so grateful that we found their practice.

Cannot fault them from the initial phone call after being very let down by previous vets. Diagnosed a serious issue with my dog, despite the fact he had been seen by previous vets since he was 12 weeks old & then annually !!!
Lovely staff, brilliant vet (James) caring, compassionate & 1st class

I’m honestly lost for words

I’m honestly lost for words. I haven’t been with TMTV for long, but in my short time with them, I have been BLOWN AWAY. I have been to many practices throughout my 30yrs on earth, and N.O.T.H.I.N.G is ever too much trouble for the team. I annoy them most days over multiple platforms, and they are still as friendly and lovely as ever. They are SO friendly and welcoming. They treat you like family, not like a paying client. I’m not kidding when I say they go above and beyond for you (Jemma and Michelle, I’m looking at you!!) I have to give a special shout out to vet Jemma, reception staff Michelle, Debbie, Hannah and Jack, amongst everyone else. My animals are literally my life. They have saved me from some pretty serious consequences. I have felt like I have failed them throughout their years on earth, due to previous practices treating them without due care and attention- (I won’t go into details). Merlin especially is petrified of the vets. Everyone, without fail, gets growls, hisses, swipes etc. I have just dropped Merlin off for his op with the team. The second time he has ever been to TMTV. Not a peep was made from him. I cried all the way home. This is such a turning point for him. They know… they can judge characters. Every staff member I have encountered is genuinely there because they love animals and want to help.

You’re looking at this page for a reason. Whether you’re being nosey or thinking about changing practices, just do it. I will never, EVER change now. The team are worth more than their weight in gold. If you can do just one kindness for your pets, it’s to choose The Market Town Vets (Shrews).

Bruce the rottweiler

My self and Bruce my rottweiler have not had positive experiences with vets, Bruce has always been very scared and at times reactive. I read the reviews for market town vets in shrewsbury and booked Bruce in. Ben and the team were amazing with Bruce and he was so chilled. Bruce had to have an operation and he let Ben give him an injection with out any fuss. Bruce is now recovering and has been for his first check up, Bruce was so excited to see Ben and the team tonight and is doing really well. Thank you market town vets for restoring my faith and sorting my best buddy out.

Fantastic

I have 3 dogs and every time I have to visit The Market Town Vet in Shrewsbury I feel like we're in safe and expert hands. A big thank you to Ben for his recent care of Morty and the time he took to explain the treatment plan and answer questions. You could not ask for more in a vet or for beloved pets.

From the very first visit

From the very first visit, we have had nothing but 5 star service from Ben, James and Michelle and the admin team. The whole team are extremely friendly, approachable and very knowledgeable and nothing is too much trouble. Time is taken to explain everything, and also to ensure that the pets are comfortable and happy before the examination is started. I cannot praise this practice highly enough!

Health Care Plan

You always know when you visit MTV Shrewsbury you are going to be made welcome by everyone! I changed to MTV 8 months ago and I’m unsure as to why I didn’t do it sooner! Today my Cockapoo has received her annual vaccination and I have joined the Health Care Plan which couldn’t have been easier, I will get reminders to ensure I give her treatment at the necessary intervals! 👍🏻
Ben is always happy to answer any questions or concerns and I feel confident and at ease with his explanations. In addition to this I feel he really knows my dog now.
I went to MTV initially for a second opinion and now I wouldn’t go anywhere else.

The best vet we have ever had!

Moved to MT after our previous vet was more about the money they could make. A work colleague recommended them as they had recently moved to them for the same reasons. We have been with them for over a year and they have never disappointed. All the staff there are so caring. They have the time to talk to you if you have any concerns or worries and dont try to push expensive treatments on you. It just feels more personal like they actually really care. And their monthly payment plan is amazing and helps a lot. You get much more from it than we did at our previous vets. I cannot recommend MT highly enough.

My Tortoise

Took my 24 year old Tunisian tortoise, Pearl, to see Ben at Shrewsbury as she had not woken up properly from hibernation this year and was not eating. My other 4 tortoises are fine.
Ben said she was a nice tortoise and after X-rays and an examination recommended amending her heating so it is on 24/7, putting Reptoboost in her bath water. After a second visit to see Ben , she has finally started to liven up and eat.
Thank you so much to Ben for his advice and patience (with her worried owner!) to reassure me that she should be fine.

Thoroughly recommend The Market Town Vet

Have used TMTV since Ken McBrien left…

Have used TMTV since Ken McBrien left Border and Border couldn't see our very sick dog for over a week.
We have been at our caravan for the last week and a couple of days ago Milo, our one year old Lab, got the squits, sorry can't spell diarrhoea! Today we found blood too. Phoned TMTV spoke to Rob who told me what I needed but in view of how far away we were he would be available for a short while after the practice closed.
We arrived just before closing time and were greeted by Amanda and soon went in to see Rob Milo's abdomen was checked his temperature taken medicines dispensed then finished our journey home. I would like to thank all involved at TMTV and thank goodness we still have one independent Vet in Oswestry who consider animal welfare above profit.

Thank you to Ben the vet and the reception team

My husband and I recently had to take our leopard gecko, Leo, to the vet after he sustained a serious injury. We were fortunate to find Ben at this veterinary practice, who specialises in reptiles.
During our first appointment, Ben was extremely knowledgeable and performed an X-Ray to diagnose Leo's issue. He then prescribed several medications for us to try over 10 days.

Throughout the entire process, Ben took the time to listen to our concerns and answer any questions we had, even days after our initial consultation.

Unfortunately, despite all of our best efforts, Leo didn't make it. However, we were grateful for Ben's expertise and dedication in helping our little guy. He did everything within his power to ensure that Leo was as comfortable and as pain-free as possible in his final days.

The care and compassion that Ben (and the reception team) showed towards us during this difficult time offered some comfort, and we will always remember their kindness. We highly recommend Ben and this veterinary practice to anyone who has reptiles.
