The most epic and enjoyable Great Himalayan Trail experience

The Mountain Company have delivered a 42 day trek that exceeded all expectations. From initial planning and enquiries they were knowledgable , professional and open about the trek and took time to speak to me by zoom to determine my suitability. The Kangchenjunga to Makalu BC GHT was an epic trek, where thorough planning and organisation was essential for it to succeed. TMC gave me the confidence that this was happening and with their vast knowledge of Nepal were able to deliver an amazing adventure from start to finish, walking through the most amazing terrain, often in very remote locations. From the fellow trekkers, to the cook team, the porters, the excellent international leader ( Robert Mads Anderson) and all the Kathmandu staff, particularly Roland Hunter, we experienced a cohesive group, tackling challenging days and terrain with enthusiasm and good humour. The fact that this worked so successfully was largely down to the diligence and commitment of Roland and TMC- thank you for an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience. Would highly recommend this trek ( make sure you are fit enough mentally and physically) and highly recommend this company - would have no hesitation choosing TMC again for subsequent trekking.

An unforgettable trip that completely…

An unforgettable trip that completely delivered (and in some cases surpassed) our expectations. We felt very safe and cared for when on-trip, in-country and we look forward to returning to Nepal and would choose The Mountain Company again. This is because it is an organised and very professional operator and Roland is very communicative. Their trips are organised with care for the wider trek team and a sensitivity to where they operate. And the trips are FUN!

Gentle hiking in Croatia

A great laidback gentle holiday which had it all - a few hikes, city breaks and island hopping boat trips all coordinated by our equally laidback guide Marco who exuded calm confidence and was a fountain of knowledge. Having only four of us (friends) out of a possible maximum of twelve, we were gently herded along the trails and the itinerary seamlessly amended to suit both our wishes and the weather - and I suspect our joint abilities (average age 70). Not too testing but a great introduction to a beautiful country and we travelled at the right time to miss the crowds and the inclement weather.
Highly recommend for those who are not competitive walkers and who like to walk but also linger and observe.

Far West Exploratory trek May 2024

I've done several treks with the Mountain Company over the years (first one c.2012) Prior to the trip I'm always very impressed with Roland's communication - no query is too insignificant and always gets a personal response. Once in country things run as smoothly as that country will allow - more importantly when things become more complicated you realise that Roland, the group leader and especially the local sirdars have several back-up plans in place ready to go. The equipment and food on this very remote trip were (as always) excellent. Roland offers more trips to places that other companies don't offer (I also did Upper Dolpo with the MC) and I would highly recommend taking advantage of this. On this trip at one point we didn't see another person for over a week - a very different side of Nepal from the Everest/Annapurna regions. When we hiked to the Mt Kailash viewpoint a lot of the crew came with us to check it out even though it was technically a rest day for them... They were as eager to explore this spiritually significant area as we
were. To sum up these trips are definitely pricey but once you see the logistics that go into running them and get to experience the culture and landscape of these remote regions (which will modernise fast as roads get built) I believe they are more than worth it! Highly recommended!!

Amazing trekking experience in a remote region of Nepal

My husband and I had chosen to join an exploratory trek in the Far West region of Nepal with The Mountain Company after booking two other great trekking trips with the company before. Due to the rapid expansion of the road network in the Himalayas, several of the more traditional trekking routes now either follow or come very close to roads for an extended period of time, and the idea behind the exploratory trek was to develop a new trekking route which would avoid roads as much as possible. Since the trek had only been attempted once before and was located in a very remote region of Nepal, it was important to bring an open, flexible mind-set, which was part of the allure for us to join the trek. We were not disappointed! While we managed to follow the established route and all cheered when we managed to cross the high pass, surprises did pop up along the way, all of them handled professionally and calmly by our cheerful, knowledgeable guide Adrian and the local guides and staff.
The landscape during the trek was varied, starting with a descend into a river valley just as about a million butterflies had hatched (amazing sight!), walks through dense, lush forests, sections following glacial rivers through wide plains, rocky paths into the mountains, and alpine plateaus with amazing vistas of snow-capped peaks all the way around. Our campsites matched the beauty of the trek, always in breathtaking locations and with plenty of time in the afternoon to take the vistas in. We passed both through traditional villages that seemed frozen in time and villages closer to roads that were a curious blend between tradition and modernity, met yak herders out in the middle of nowhere and were the main attraction in villages that had not seen a Westerner for several years.
The organization of the trek was excellent as always, the food as delicious as it was nutritious, keeping us well-fueled for hours of walking (the noodle soup was a real comforter on tough days!), and the staff were always kind and helpful. I can warmly recommend booking a trip with The Mountain Company.

The Far West Nepal Exploratory GHT trek…

The Far West Nepal Exploratory GHT trek is a +20 day trek to a very remote region of western Nepal. This area is rarely visited by westerners and you are likely to see very few other trekkers. The landscape is varied and you'll pass through forest, high alpine desert, river valleys, villages and mountain passes meeting only a few local yak and goat herders. The trip included crossing the Nying La pass at 5400 meters (which only very few people ever does!) and visiting the Mount Kailash view point on the border with Tibet. Later the trek passes through villages with visits to very old Gompas (Buddhist temple) with impressive wall paintings. The trek is remote and includes a good amount of travel but is well worth the effort! This was our 3rd trip with the Mountain Company which is an excellent tour operator who provides lots of feedback prior to the treks, has extremely professional local crews, great guides and some of the best treks in the Himalayas. Especially the company does a lot to find treks in more remote and less visited areas of the Himalayas which helps both the local economy but also decreases over-crowding and ecological damage due to tourism. We highly recommend both the Far West Nepal trek itself as well as The Mountain Company for any trips to this area!

An excellent adventure in Upper Dolpo

This was an "adventure" trek, exploring the Upper Dolpo region of Nepal. The planning was flawless, and the management of the trek smooth and hassle-free. Food plentiful, and all of The Mountain Company's team were cheerful, professional and hard working.

The Perfect Trek Through the Upper Dolpo

The Mountain Company concentrates on providing the best experience for all participants, right from pre-trip information, a caring and knowledgeable leader and wonderful Nepalese crew. With encroaching roads, the itinerary was revised to include a remote pass to finish the trek experience on a high. Roland pays special attention to altitude acclimatization and provides weather updates to the trek leader. My second long trek with The Mountain Company.

The Mountain Company is a serious trekking company

The Mountain Company is a serious tour operator specialising in treks in Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan and North India. It is an impressive outfit with a commitment to safety and health, high quality sustainable travel and, importantly, ethics in the way it cares the crew locally. I have nothing but praise for Roland and staff and associates in Nepal. I felt inspired by its ethos and way I was looked after generally. I’ll certainly return.

Absolutely amazing - holiday of a lifetime

My husband and I trekked the Manaslu Circuit with The Mountain Company in April 2024, and can honestly say it was a once in a lifetime experience. The guide and porters were amazing, the scenery was phenomenal, and the trekking itself was not as challenging as I'd expected (which was a bonus!). The whole team took amazing care of us, and I would book again with The Mountain Company in a heartbeat. Roland (the owner) is always on hand to answer any questions or help organise anything extra, and you really feel like you are in a safe pair of hands to explore the beauty of the Himalayas!

Fantastic Manaslu with Tsum Valley Trek

I can highly recommend the Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley trek. This was my second visit to Nepal and I wanted to get up into the high Himalayas and a bit more off the beaten track. This trek did not disappoint.
If you can find the time adding the Tsum Valley to the Manaslu Circuit is a must. It is a wonderful hidden valley of ancient Buddhist monasteries and temples. For me that was the highlight. Despite the remoteness the tea houses were better than I had expected. The joy of the trek is the journey through a stunningly beautiful landscape at walking pace.
The Mountain Company is spectacularly efficiently run. It was reassuring to know that if anything did go wrong they would have it in hand.
The trek was an amazing adventure.

An exceptional trekking company!

The Mountain Company (TMC) are truly an exceptional company. Unlike many of the other trekking companies out there, TMC really does provide a personal service and the company MD Roland Hunter personally meets all trekkers for a pre-trek briefing prior to heading off into the mountains. There is a wealth of useful information on the website, with detailed trip itineraries, pre trip information, training guides, kit lists etc, and the thought and detail that has gone into these is clear. Roland is on hand to answer any questions, and whenever we did have a question we would always receive a detailed and comprehensive response within a matter of hours.

The organisation of the treks is second to none. We have done two teahouse treks and one camping trek, and each have run so smoothly. The crew we had with us on the camping trek were truly remarkable, with 14 people looking after our group of four: a guide, an assistant guide, a cook, three assistant cooks and 8 porters. Always smiling, always helpful and could not do enough for us.

Next time I plan to head to the Himalayas, I would not hesitate to give TMC a call to discuss options.

MCT 2023

Overall, an unforgettable adventure in this part of the himalayas for its natural beauty and people. The fantastic fellow trekkers and of course the reliable support of the ground crew have made this tough circuit trek achievable and worth every step, sweat and breath. I must say that this may not be for someone who dislikes long bumpy rides along narrow dirt roads on the way to and from the trailhead, but its all part of the experience to be in this remote part of the world. Meals were typical healthy Nepalese meal offerings in the lodges. Accommodation was good enough to have decent shelter to recover but get ready for an interesting night in a small settlement before the pass, experiencing it once is enough. Good choice of hotel in KTM. The TMC provided great support and communication throughout the duration of the trek, much appreciated the group debrief feedback with RH post the trek.

Everest Base Camp Trek

An enjoyable and beautiful first trek with the The Mountain Company. The itinerary, including greater time for acclimatisation and an interesting alternative higher route on the return, greatly helped in making the trek a real pleasure.

Roland was super helpful with advice and guidance before the trek and TMC's organisation, logistics, comms and local team were excellent throughout.

Would highly recommend and already planning future treks with TMC.

My trek to Everest Base Camp with The Mountain Company was a fantastic blend of challenge and enjoyment.
