From out of nowhere a demand for just under £500 My tax accountant has reported them to the relevent authorities. Despite this they have contacted me numerous times using different phone numbers and e mails. Not sure how to get rid of them, I have told them I will see the, in court, but they just keep on phoning, mailing and texting

Seem to be conning artists!

This company keep contacting me saying I have my details to them via Allay and I owe them money from 2019, which was apparently refunded in 2023. I checked my HMRC account and have had no refunds. My signature has been copied over and pasted onto their forms via Allay. I’ve never dealt with this company let alone signed up as have been under tax thresholds during time they specify. Now repeated emails and calls chasing. Reporting to HMRC for fraudulent practices.

I would give zero stars if I could

I would give zero stars if I could. A vile company with vile harassing staff. They claim they have got me a refund from the tax office and they want me to pay them over £60 for getting me this. They have not got me a refund. I have not had a refund. They are the absolute scum of the Earth.

This company is an absolute joke

This company is an absolute joke. They wanted 50% of what I claimed back. Then they have constantly harassed me with threats of court action even though I have paid them. I am a single mum in the military with a mortgage and they have severally messed with my mental health. If they mess with my credit rating I will totally lose it as I have always sat at 1000 out of 1000. I am going to get legal advice. Please stay away from these jokers

Then.Tax Over 2 years latter requesting payment…

Received an email requesting payment for services over 2 years ago (01/2023) after tax refund, never heard anything from them or ways to pay until 04/2025 had to go though old statements to make sure it wasn’t a scam and requested original documentation from then.tax .Would avoid at all cost. Im the type of person that regularly check my emails and had nothing via post either very sneaky way of getting you into financial trouble and marks against your new credit report for unsettled debts specially when they leave it to the point where you can’t even remember owing.

I was recently contacted by this…

I was recently contacted by this company, requersting permission to search for possible a possible tax refund. My wife and I have a joint email account, my wife advised me of this email I was unable to read it myself at the time because I was driving, we were able to chat about it at the time, I said I had never heard of this company, she said we had used them before and all they do is advise if there is a tax refund due and that they would advise us so. I had misgivings, I really wasn't sure that I wanted to use this company, something in my spirit was disquieted and not sure if this company were a decent company to employ on my/our behalf, I was unable to search reviews because I was driving, so I gave my wife the go ahead to start the ball rolling. This was a big mistake, I take full responsibilty for having used them to contact HRMC on my/our behalf and I should have said to my wife at the time, let me check the company out first before proceeding. Roll on a few weeks, I then receive a letter from HRMC stating that the had charged me to much tax over a period of some four years, the amount owed to me was £1054.42p. Because we had given Then Tax permission to search on our behalf the HRMC passed it back to Then Tax advising us that Then Tax would issue a payment to us. A couple of days later I receive an email from Then Tax advising me that they were about to pay £548.30p into an account of my choice, they took 48% from the amount. This is daylight robbery for a few phone calls or letters or emails to HRMC on our behalf. I really wish now that when my wife and I decided to pursue this claim that I had put the brakes on and checked this company out first, talk about a fool and his money, that fool was me, and I am so annoyed with myself because of my misgivings at the time, not being sure about this company.
What be my advice to anyone who receives any request from the company, do not employ them, steer clear of them. It will never happen to me again, once bitten and all that. They are a den of thieves. stay away from them.

Iv'e just got this from then.tax :-

"HMRC have made us aware that the PPI-related tax refund claim we submitted on your behalf has been successful and that they have issued the refund payment directly to you.

You will receive an invoice from us shortly in respect of this. It will contain a secure link to view and pay your invoice online. For your convenience, we can accept credit/debit card as well as Google and Apple Pay."

I have checked back over my last 12 months bank statements - no payment from HMRC.
Not surprising really, as my only income is state pension which is well below the tax threshold !

This 'company' are a bunch or chancers, who will be ignored - after i pass this info to 'Action Fraud'.

just awful …

I believe I responded to an ad saying you may have paid tax on PPI and we can get it back for you.
In fact they just applied for my current tax refund and helped themselves to 50 % of it. I have just received notice they want to do it again as I appear to have given permission to take it every year.
All emails are auto generated, no response or means to get in touch h with anything that might resemble a human being although if you know you are using extortion to pay your wages don’t know how they sleep at night . Spend my hard earned wisely while I try and stay warm.

Lets be honest here

Lets be honest here - this is the same company as Allay. They've bulk claimed everyones tax without permission and hoping that no one asks for it back. You'll note the lack of response to their support team, the lack of contact number etc...

It's not even a clever scam - the sad thing is they get away with it.

I’ve had two emails from them and of course it is a scam. If the tax office owed me money then that would come direct. It makes me feel quite sick that the nasty people are fraudsters / scammers and they should not have my details either. Thank you to previous reviews that confirm this.

Claim Tax Without Permission!

Update: July 2025

We have had yet another claim/payout submitted by ThenTax this year so we contacted the tax office on this occasion to question these payouts.
HMRC had informed us that this company 'Then' were acting as nominees and had submitted claim forms that contained my husbands signature? As he doesn't ever remember engaging with them ever, we believe they may be obtaining signatures from Allay themselves.
We have contacted both Allay and Then and challenged both companies about this but, of course they deny this sort of practice happens and Then Tax even had the nerve to send us documents complete with my husbands signatures that give them permission to delve through his tax, we still believe this could be a case of both companies using a simple copy and paste signature and just adding an appropriate date to suit.
(Documents were digital copies sent via email, no paperwork exists...go figure!)
So...we've asked Allay to remove our data from their system except for any information they are required to hold by law, we've also asked Then to do the same and they still argued they had an agreement/permission from us to continue to act as nominees, ABSOLUTELY NOT so in which case, we've asked HMRC to remove these fraudsters from my husbands tax account and would strongly advise the rest of you having the same issues do the same to hopefully stop these companies operating in this way.
Further advice from HMRC was to speak to their fraud department which we will be doing, if either Allay or Then ever dare to contact us again or attempt to make any further claims from anybody in my husbands name!

PPI was originally claimed through Allay who at some point sent my husbands details to these vultures. Message after message arrived asking us to reclaim £33 tax refund in addition to the PPI. We ignored them but they went ahead anyway without permission and fast forward to August 2024...HMRC want £55 from us.
They have sent a letter to Then Tax Refunds also, let's see if they return the tax they unlawfully claimed...I doubt it!

To clarify, we did not claim or receive any of the £33, the amount didn't seem worth the time or hassle so Then have had every single penny and left us out of pocket twice!

Be Warned, it will cost you just to get away from them.

Be warned, once you've signed up it's going to cost you just to get their claws out of your flesh. I just received this "Therefore, should you wish to cancel outside 14 day free cancellation period we will charge a fee which is currently 95.88+VAT (£115.06). Please also be advised should we receive a notification from HMRC that you have had a win as a result of a claim we have submitted before you cancelled with us, then we will be back in touch and your full fee may be payable".

Excessive fees

Last year I engaged then tax to apply for a tax refund from HMRC, this they did within a reasonable period of time but they charged me 44% commission fee, this is excessive and they did not tell me in advance. Next time I will go elsewhere.

I knew nothing about the Allay claim to repay tax. The first I knew was the letter from HMRC telling me about my tax rebate for year 21/22 and sending the adjusted tax statement for that year. It was for a very small amount, £23 but then I receive the text from ThenTax asking me to send my bank account details to receive the £12.20 ! As everybody has written, robbery, and in the name of HMRC. Disgusting. Peter
