I’d love this hotel to be my secret …

We had an amazing stay at the hotel having just stayed for New Year’s Eve. We stayed in the Wellington suite, overlooking the sea…. Moonrise, sunset and sunrise - sitting on the balcony watching each turn of the night and day was simply beautiful.

The outdoor heater was perfect and the hotel (although fully booked) kindly accommodated us to be able to eat from our room since they were full as was everywhere else in Deal. The hotel couldn’t have been more helpful, polite and welcoming.

This was our second stay - and I’d love it to be my secret…. I’m writing a book and this would be the perfect place to stay for a week if money were no object 🫶🏻

The evening meal was amazing as was the breakfast in the morning.

The hotel staff were welcoming and attentive- could not fault anything!

Thank you 🙏🏻

The staff were extremely helpful and welcoming and felt a bit embarrassed for them, as they have to explain why the hotel is the way it is.
On arrival we had a pleasant welcome, and to be informed that their chef had just resigned/walked out,so there would be no breakfast in the morning,we couldn’t find the local cafe which was the only option, their website didn’t look inviting,we tried the premier inn, however they charged a parking fee of £7, so wasn’t viable or cost effective.
The room looked as though it was left in the 70s in a bad way, with unpainted wooden floors,a net curtain with a gaping hole that would be hard to miss and shredded along the bottom, all hanging from a curtain pole that was falling down, finally the rear patio door which was wooden was rotten and wasn’t at all secure from those walking past with only a low wall to step over.

The view however was really nice of the Thames that was what the premium charge was for.

Again lovely staff but management really need to invest in a serious refurb.

We booked a 3 night stay at this hotel 29 th October to 1st November
The web photos look amazing 3 star
Believe me it’s not even a 1 star
As soon as we arrived at reception the stake smell and dirty carpets
We checked in hoping it was just traffic through the reception
All the way to our room the carpets are filthy and lumpy
When we got in our room the Bathroom had definitely not been cleaned
Poo in the toilet
Blood on hand basin
The shower was mouldy the shower slip mat was covered in mould
There was something sticking out of the shower drain plug
Could of been dirty underwear
It was discusting
We went back to reception told them we didn’t want to stay explained the room condition
The gentleman said he would give us our money back but couldn’t as he needed another member of staff to do it
He promised they would phone me
Obviously no phone call
I emailed them through the Agoda website
Finally got a reply giving us a telephone number to phone for the refund
The telephone number is a dead line
So we still haven’t been refunded
We will be taking legal action to recover our money
It completely ruined our short break
You have been warned

Dinner Bed and Breakfast Deal at the Royal In Ross

Hotel Royal In Ross On Wye for 2 nights dinner, bed and breakfast overall cost £405. The Good stuff first, the hotel was as we expected and our room, a superior double was good, very clean, in good decorative condition with everything operational, albeit up two flights of stairs, good exercise. Staff were super, breakfast was even better than expected and expectations were high. Drink prices for a hotel were more than fair. The not so good, There is some scaffolding at the back which needs a paint but this is a nice place to sit out and have a drink looking over the river Wye. The Bad, there is a dinner menu for those booking the dinner inclusive deal, this is quite heavily redacted from the main menu and this is not made clear when booking. The one dinner we had was so poor that we did not bother the next night, the standard of microwaved mass produced poor quality food was so bad it dragged down our rating from a 4.5 to a dodgy 2 We ate the next night in the Man of Ross where the food was super. Our advice yes stay there and have the wonderful breakfast but don't eat dinner there. Parking is as has been mentioned in many reviews, tight a small car is recommended.

The room was lovely

The room was lovely, spacious and airy we were pleasantly surprised at the size and character.
Overlooking the beach with windows all round it was a hot day so the fact that we could open up all the windows was a godsend.

The bathroom looked like it had been refurbished quite recently but I did not like the yellow stain around the bottom of the toilet, not nice to look at and not hard to get rid of.

I did also notice that the wooden furnishings were sticky like the breakfast table and stair bannisters and the breakfast was bland not very nice and the sausage was strange.

Not as good now

Have been to this hotel many times as we catch the ferry from Nigg to Cromarty. Just usually for a Lunch

We have noticed some decline recently which is a shame and I know the hotel is for sale

We ordered a Hake (not available so cod replacement). I ordered scampi chips peas. The skinny fries were anaemic and poor presentation. My husband wasn’t impressed with the cod meal

We were asked if we wanted to but raffle tickets at the table which I think is a no no but my husband bought some.

We didn’t complain we should have but we didn’t order coffee a sweet or give a tip

Probably wouldn’t return would try somewhere else

Great place by the coast

What a fantastic hotel!
Everything about a Shepherd & Neame hotel equals attention to detail.
Would like to pay special attention to the two reception desk staff - possibly managers - both at check-in and check-out. Also, the lady who served us breakfast.
Stayed in several of these over the years and they all offer very high standards for the price.
The food is always excellent - both the evening meal and breakfast. I had the steak, my partner the swordfish.
However, we were disappointed when the bar closed at 10 when we were told it was available until 11.
Guests were checking in just after 10 who wouldn't have been able to get a drink if they wanted one!
That said, we look forward to our next stay in one of these establishments in Kent.

Boathouse, The Royal Hotel, Deal

First off.... had a very pleasant experience in the beach front Boathouse restaurant around two years ago (part of The Royal Hotel, Deal).
Unfortunately, the sane could not be said today. Arrived around 2pm midweek. Asked if we could have a table... response "Anywhere."
So sat down, spotted a waitress talking to another table with a few board backed menus. I waited till she was returning, presumably with an order and asked politely if I could have a couple of menus...
Response "they're inside" and off she went. The lady on the next table smiled in acknowledgement. I went and got two menus and as I passed my fellow I mentioned how similar.they were to the two the waitress had.been holding. Another smile.
Quickly picked out what we wanted. The waitress returned to the afore mentioned lady who had clearly been waiting for some time.... she begun to place her order and mentioned that as she had been waiting, she had tried to place her order using the table QR code....
Response .... "oh that doesn't work."
The waitress walked off again.
My friend had in the meantime entered the bar and tried to order drinks..... without any success with what I'm told were two disinterested bar staff. He returned, I got up and walked out.

Such a sad experience given a previous positive visit.

Won't be returning.

I would normally leave a higher mark for this restaurant. However this is the second time I have been served by a waitress (a very pleasant person) wearing absolutely filfthy black tshirt and leggings. It is extremely offputting being served food by someone who has
food stains all over their clothes. The Management should sort this out by providing clean uniforms.

Stayed in Feb 2024

This review is for the ROYAL HOTEL IN DOCKRAY, Ullswater. Stayed in Feb 2024. Have stayed at this lovely little pub/hotel before and found it perfect. Very disappointed this time because, sorry to say, some of the staff who have been taken on since change of ownership, really let it down now. Cannot mention names but, one young chap with a beard was very insulting about one of his colleagues who has been there over 6 years and does a wonderful job as he is diligent, caring and so friendly. This young person not only insulted other staff within hearing of paying guests but also overcharged on glasses of wine. Another young man swore twice within our hearing. You have a fine place there and Bart and Monika are a valuable asset to your hotel who just want customers to have an enjoyable time, they cannot do enough for you. What a shame that the most recent additions do not feel the same. The lounge area is surely for the guests NOT the young ones who work there!! They commandeered the tv without asking the guests what they wanted to watch. Sad review but true.

Shearlings coach holiday to Yorkshire

My entire experience was negative. The first thing that struck me was how cold the room was. Then I noticed that my towels were both ripped as well as dirty.
Dinner the first day was mediocre at best. Dinner the second day was a disaster, first my soup was overly salted and I doubt I was given a full ladle! The sweet was served in a cracked Sundae dish and the juice from my pudding all leaked out. They said they would throw the dish away, after I used it. I got very sick with vomiting and diarrhoea. We had a trip cancelled due to bad weather so instead they gave us a cream tea of scones, cream and jam with a cup of tea. They served the scones on serviettes! We were told where to sit for the entire holiday for our meals. We were not sat with friendly people and could not move!. The best part of this coach trip was the coach driver Robin who had a sense of humour

Avoid at busy times

Avoid at busy times. Food was okay, nothing special for the price, but we all got sick afterwards. Do not think the food was the problem, but the general hygiene in the Christmas rush to make as much money as possible was probably at fault. Table and cutlery hygiene was questionable, mix up over what dishes were being served, general chaos and lack of attention. We all shared a starter then had different mains. We all got quite sick within a few hours, and had been nowhere else that day. Truly, always think about where you go out to eat over any busy festive period, as places like this are under strain to get money in, and customers and their welfare probably take a back seat (no pun intended).

Forearmed is forewarned, perhaps I could come see your operation, I’m no competition, and you’d be welcome to see the cleanliness and hygiene standards of my own (domestic) kitchen, utensils, crockery, etc…
