Mediocre- Poor/ service of stylist- VANILLA ROOM- Hornchurch High Street. Essex
I visited the Vanilla Room on February 20, 2026, expecting a consultation and haircut. Although my hair is short, the length on top is approximately four inches; nonetheless, at first glance, one might perceive it as shorter than it actually is.
I attended in the afternoon, seeking guidance on colour and potential haircut options.
Although my hair is short, I had at least of four inches of good length on top; nonetheless, I ultimately left with only a few millimetres cut off, which cannot even be considered a proper trim let alone anything else. The stylist, as she identifies herself, failed to section my hair and deliver a uniform trim; instead, she haphazardly snipped random sections, resulting in an uneven and formless appearance, leaving the back of my neck ragged and straggly. I did not fully recognise this until I returned home and examined myself in the mirror. Had I scrutinised it while at the salon, I would have addressed the issue, but I did wonder why when I departed I felt just as unkempt as when I initially first entered the salon
She was unable to execute a comprehensive blow dry despite my request for a complete blow dry, after initially asking me, "Do you want a rough dry or a blow dry?" What do you anticipate my expectations to be? I am compensating you to ensure that I believe my hair has been styled perfectly, correct? This encompasses utilising your brush, applying tension, directing hot air, and styling my hair to achieve a beautifully bouncy, completely dry finish. Except that she was scarcely capable of doing a good blow-dry. She lacked the energy to create tension with the uniform portions of my hair, resulting in a damp and wilted appearance. Additionally, as I mentioned, there were random strands at the ends that were trimmed by a millimetre, affecting the whole appearance of my hair.
- Upon my return home [in North London], I was unable to discern any difference between before and after. There was an absence of the typical exhilaration experienced after a salon haircut-no buoyant, luxurious sensation, but rather a continuation of the dishevelled flat lifeless state I had upon arrival. I had to get a pair of scissors to trim the uneven strands left by the stylist, tidy the nape of my neck with a razor-an undertaking typically performed by proficient stylists-and attempt to rectify her errors independently. This was exceedingly frustrating, disappointing, and a complete waste of both time and money. The cost by the way is subordinate to the disappointment.
The salon has been well looked after and organised; the staff generally seems amiable. The receptionists were cheerful and approachable while maintaining professionalism, so I have no concerns regarding those elements. However, I will refrain from naming the stylist, as I do not wish to engage in public shaming. My intent in mentioning this is to highlight that the stylist appears to lack proficiency in managing shorter hair.
Based on my expertise, she appears to also be unable to do an effective blow-dry. I possess exceptionally thick hair, and I am aware from years of knowing that it requires considerable manipulation and time. However I will add that, the young lady who attended to me was professional in her demeanour regardless of her skills- The encounter was unsatisfactory altogether. Particularly because I had to go home and cut and re-blow dry it myself=poor craftsmanship.
