Best experience! Had a great couple of weeks with the team from THO and working in Mwananyamala as well as joining an outreach. So much experience for me and the people were open and interested in exchanging knowledge and experience. THO is also really good at being welcoming, including, respectful and funny. Have had so much fun and made friends which were extremely hard to leave. The trip with THO exceeded my expectations and I can’t wait to go back!

When I applied to volunteer with THO I wanted an authentic experience into subsaharan Africa and its healthcare challenges. In my time there I gained that and much more. I worked at a local regional hospital and was able to gain so much hands on experience and see a diversity of cases. Everyone at the hospital and outside were incredibly friendly and made my experience very special.

On top of that THO is a very well run organisation - Dr. Williams is able to help with anything extremely promptly and made me feel fully supported and looked after the entire time. My home stay was wonderful and I was able to meet so many other volunteers, many of which I will continue to stay friends with for a long time. Outside of hospital work I was also able to experience Tanzanian culture and life, and thoroughly enjoyed my time outside of work. Dar es salaam is a vibrant city.

Overall I highly recommend THO and am keen to go back very soon. Thank you THO!

I had an amazing time volunteering with Tanzania Health Opportunities. I was greeted at my homestay with nothing but kindness and warmth, and every single person I met during my experience was welcoming, kind, and caring. I was able to immerse myself during my placement and gained very valuable insight into how healthcare is delivered in this setting, which I was able to apply to my medical training back home. Since coming back from Tanzania, I have felt significantly more confident in my practice and training at home because THO prepared me so well. Francesca and David went out of their way to organize activities for the volunteers, I was never bored, and felt like I got to know Tanzania and Dar Es Salaam quite well. On the weekends, I was able to visit zanzibar, and explore more of this beautiful country. THO was an incredible experience and I look forward to the day where I cross paths with this organization again.

I had an amazing experience volunteering with THO! At a government-run hospital in Dar es Salaam, I was able to get hands on in the emergency department, work as part of the healthcare team and learn about a different healthcare system. Additionally, THO’s outreach medical camps are a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in rural areas with limited access to healthcare. I stayed with a lovely host family who were extremely welcoming and cooked delicious traditional African meals. In my free time, THO organised many activities which allowed me to meet other volunteers, experience the local culture and explore the beautiful islands near Dar es Salaam. I felt very safe and supported throughout my stay and would thoroughly recommend this programme to any healthcare students!

My time with THO was the most memorable and meaning experience I’ve had. As a health care professional and student, I got the opportunity to learn, see, and do so much. This experience was so impactful for my professional and personal growth, and definitely helped shape who I am as a health care provider. A key highlight was all the people I got to meet and connections I made. Everyone at THO as well as all the doctors and nurses at Mwananyamala Hospital were so welcoming and supportive. As a medical volunteer with THO, I got to make meaningful contributions to patients care and experience the vibrant culture Tanzania has to offer. Would recommend this program to any health care professional, student or anyone looking to make a difference :)

I spent three weeks volunteering in Dar es Salaam as a fifth-year medical student, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. I went there to learn about healthcare in a different setting (and I certainly did!), but it became so much more than that.
Working at the hospital was eye-opening, but what made the biggest difference was the people — the other volunteers and the organisers. Sharing everyday life, meals, and laughs with them made the experience unique. Their kindness and energy created a sense of community that made me feel at home, even miles away from it.
I came back with new skills, great memories, and friendships that made this journey truly special.

I am a final year med student and i was in Dar es Salaam (Mwananyamala hospital) for three weeks. I came for an experience in healthcare but this turned out to be so much more than that. Cultural differences, amazing homestay (at Asha’s house) with local food, afternoon activities, other volunteers, flexibility in what I wanted and didn’t want to do.
I truly appreciate enthusiasm of the organizers!🫶🏽They do so much to make sure every volunteer has a better and better experience.

Participating in this volunteer experience at the hospital was, without a doubt, one of the most meaningful and transformative chapters of my life. I set out with the desire to give something of myself, but what I received in return far exceeded my expectations. Every day spent supporting the healthcare staff and interacting with patients showed me how much of a difference the simple gesture of presence and attention can make.
Living with a local family was a unique privilege: immersing myself completely in their daily lives, discovering their traditions, sharing meals and intimate moments allowed me to connect with the local culture in a 100% authentic and profound way. The smiles of the children, the chats with the elderly, the curiosity and generosity of those who welcomed me enriched me more than I could ever have given.
Sharing this experience with the other volunteers was also extraordinary: people from all over the world, united by the same spirit of service, who transformed every moment, even the most tiring ones, into an opportunity for growth and friendship. The organization was impeccable: everything was taken care of down to the smallest detail, from the constant support of the organizers to logistics, from security to daily activities, making the experience smooth and peaceful.
I return home with a heart full of gratitude, my eyes filled with indelible images, and the certainty of having experienced something unique and unrepeatable. This experience cannot be limited to being recounted: it must be lived, felt, and cherished forever.

I had an amazing time with THO this past month. Met a lot of great people from all over the world and also got to know the locals and explore their culture. The hospital experience was very hands on and you could learn a lot if you're willing to do so. Fully recommend this experience for med students or young doctors.
