When our darling Jess suddenly became seriously ill, I sent Tim a text with a video showing what was happening. Just 45 minutes passed between that first message and his final, decisive words: “I’m coming.”
After examining Jess, Tim calmly explained what he believed was happening and why letting her go was the kindest decision. No one could have handled her final moments with more compassion, gentleness or respect.
Tim explained every stage before it happened, so we understood that Jess would feel nothing beyond the initial sedative injection. She fell peacefully asleep in my husband’s arms and Tim waited until she was completely unconscious before administering the final injection. She slipped away calmly, safely and surrounded by the people who loved her.
The value of home euthanasia cannot be overstated. There was no stressful car journey, no unfamiliar waiting room and no clinical environment. Jess remained in the home she knew, held in familiar arms, with all the calmness and security that brought her. Her final experience was not fear. It was simply falling asleep at home.
Tim turned one of the worst moments of our lives into the gentlest farewell we could possibly have given her. When the time comes, you need someone who combines clinical certainty with genuine humanity. That person is Tim Hosken.
