Translation with no legal value / No sword translation!
I needed my driver's license translated from German into English for the BMV. I sent all the necessary documents and specific requirements by the BMV. First of all, I got a translation which was a word document without letterhead, signature or any other information stating that the company had translated it. So I specifically asked for a legal signed document on a letterhead etc. I was then asked if I wanted a certificate of accuracy which cost another 15€. This was just added to the otherwise black on white translation. When I was declined by the BMV and could not do my driver's test because of not fulfilling the translation requirements, I wrote to translated.com again. They now informed me (far too late) that they only offer "certified translation with no legal value [...]. We do not offer a sworn translation (with the name of the translator) in the US". Nobody informed me of this beforehand (even though I specifically asked for it!) or otherwise I would have chosen a different company. When contacting them about it, I first did not get a reply, then they did not offer a revision or a discount and I was forced to pay the money for an unnecessary and for me useless translation. I would not recommend this company.

After having analysed the instructions that you sent us when you placed the order, where it was not specified the need of a legal translation, your Project Manager asked you whether you wanted to add a Certificate of Translation Accuracy, as she noted that you may need it. As specified in our website and as informed by your Project Manager by e-mail, it is not included in the professional translation service that you chose, but we offer the option to add a it to the order as an extra service. As explained to you before starting the translation job, this certificate attests, with signature and stamp of the company, that the translation was carried out by a professional native translator to the best of his/her ability. We asked you for a confirmation and you accepted to proceed.
We do offer sworn translations, which are special translations with legal value in the country where the sworn translator is registered. However, in the US it does not exist the concept of sworn translation, so the options that are used are certified translations (the one we did), or, in specific cases, notarized translations, that are accompanied by the affidavit, which can be signed, if necessary, in the presence of a notary in order to give an even more official character to the translation.
Nonetheless, we value our customers deeply, and we take your feedback very seriously to prevent similar situations in the future.
