They apparently found the website of the conference I am organizing and proceeded to contact the invited speakers, acting as if they were affiliated, offering to reserve hotel rooms and then asking the speakers for payment, even though we had already reserved rooms elsewhere for our speakers.

I was an invited speaker for an academic conference at Sydney, and all the names and affiliations of the invites speakers had been made public. While I was expecting the conference organizers to arrange me the accommodation, I received the emails from this 'Travelhosting' saying that they can arrange for me. Their emails included correct information of mine, such as name, conference info, affiliation and email address of course. I got fooled and paid them money.
It turned out that Travelhosting did book a hotel for me, but with a way higher rate than if booked officially. Official booking can be canceled with full refund, but Travelhosting refund only 75%.
Great options and rates
They saved me in the last second they managed to find me a place for accommodation I was beginning to lose hope to find place to stay in my dates but they truly saved my trip

I am helping to organise a scientific conference in Italy and these people keep emailing the invited speakers trying to fool them into booking accommodation when it has already been booked. If this isn't criminal, then it should be.
