Upwork can permanently ban you with no real explanation and no way back once they deem you have broken rules. No matter how you did it, you will be banned for life, with your earnings taken away
I used to think the same about Upwork until recently.
Built up solid work, good clients 40+, everything going well job success 100% s stars $200,000 in earning and $20,000 paid in fees to Upwork (not including connects and subscriptions). Then got permanently suspended after using a VPN during a live client call to test access to a US-restricted system, exactly as the client requested.
Appealed and provided full video and transcript showing the context, I was on Upwork client call and tested access on VPN to their website. Still upheld as a “final decision” with no clear explanation.
Not saying it doesn’t work for some people, but experiences like that definitely make you question how fair and consistent the platform actually is.
Ask yourself if you do something to break TOS are you ok to lose everything you built through this platform? As I have had my fingers burned I would diversify. Also once your account is disabled you as a human being can never go back to the Upwork platform. EVER. Is this the type of company you want to partner with?
