My recent encounter on October 22,2024 at Urban Bar and Corner Cafe in Knoxville, TN, was regrettably characterized by unprofessional conduct and a lack of adherence to customer service standards, particularly concerning patrons who are disabled veterans like myself.
During a visit intended solely for a casual game of billiards, my friend and I were summarily ejected after inquiring about the establishment's policy on acceptable forms of identification. The manager, Jill, responded with an alarming level of hostility. Instead of providing clarity regarding the policy, she stated that she could draft a policy on the spot, dismissing my request to view any existing guidelines. This lack of transparency is concerning and undermines the establishment's credibility.
Additionally, Jill's refusal to acknowledge veteran identification cards—despite their status as valid government-issued identification—is both discriminatory and unacceptable. It is particularly disconcerting that my friend and I, who were not drinking or ordering food, were asked for identification only after we had requested change for a $20 bill to pay for our game of billiards. The fact that no identification was checked at the entrance further exacerbated the situation. Furthermore, we had paid for one game and did not get to play or receive a refund, for we were rudely told to vacate the building.
This experience has significantly tarnished my perception of Urban Bar and Corner Cafe, as it reflects poorly on the establishment’s commitment to equitable treatment and respect for all patrons. I strongly recommend that management undertake a thorough review of their policies and staff training to ensure that such incidents do not recur in the future.
