We are thrilled you think our uTalk app is amazing but are disappointed you sometimes find the loading speed slow. Our latest version 4.4.3 should make loading noticeably quicker but, if not, we are keen to investigate so please contact hello@utalk.com. Many thanks!

Happy with the app

I bought the app specifically because it had a language that no other app had and which I’d learned many years ago and wanted to brush up on (Morrocan Arabic). I also used to speak Turkish and throughout my life found it the hardest of all languages! So I really like the app and I guess you'd say I'm spoiled because I assumed ALL language apps used real humans, not AI - but I learned this is not true. However because I already know some Turkish I concluded that no way in my opinion could somebody learn, say Turkish, from scratch using this app….. but then again, the authors do not make this claim. Nevertheless, for me the app is perfect (well nearly!). Sometimes the photos aren't very clear what the words mean, and the memory game doesn't test anything other than my ability to remember where photos are. However despite these issues, I still give this app 5 stars because I'm loving it that much!

Your 5 ⭐ review saying you really like uTalk has made us very happy, thank you! We love helping people learn languages and are pleased you’ve enjoyed using our app to brush up on your Turkish skills. As you rightly say, we use recordings of authentic speakers (not computer-generated voices) to help people learn how to pronounce and recognise key words and phrases. All the words and phrases you learn are translated in our Phrase Practice section where they are also linked to pictures because research shows this helps improve recall. We also use lots of fun games to test you on what you’ve learned including the Memory Game which you mention. This is designed to get you thinking in your new language because there isn’t time to translate the words in your head. Thank you for supporting what we do and wishing you lots of good times using your spoken Turkish skills!

Hidden fees, terrible customer service, DON'T !!!

2 years ago they deducted the monthly fee twice for each month... it took me about 10 e-mails to get a refund. 3 days ago I decided to give them another chance and paid for a 1 year subscription - just to find out that there is now an additional fee for each topic ! I contacted customer service requesting a cancellation and refund: it took again 3 days to get a refund. My questions were never answered, instead I got pre-fabricated replies. I blame myself for even trying them again!

We are really sorry that you are unhappy. Having checked our records, it appears that you accidentally took out two subscriptions to our app two years ago using two different emails, one of which may have been your apple login. But, when we cancelled one of your subscriptions at your request, we didn’t spot this and so failed to alert you to it. We are very sorry for this and have now instructed our Customer Service team to be more vigilant to this potential customer pitfall. This is particularly important in your case because it appears that the very same problem happened again when you changed your monthly subscription to an annual subscription ie you tried to log in with a different email to the one which you had used to set up your subscription. This explains why you didn’t have the content automatically unlocked and were instead invited to buy uCoins. Finally, our Support staff did immediately process your requested refund and the delay of you receiving the money back was due to bank processing time which is outside of our control. If we can be of any further help, please contact hello@utalk.com and we wish you well with any future language learning you undertake.

Charging every year after cancellation

I took a subscription in 2018 and cancelled in the following year. Every year they charge me in November since then. A couple of years they refunded. This time I am going to trading standards

We are very sorry that we made a mistake and your cancellation in 2019 did not go through as it should have. As soon as you made us aware of our error, our Support staff gave you a full refund and emailed you details of your refund which was six instalments of £11.99 and which, as they explained, was due to show up on your bank statement in the next five to ten days. (Banks usually process refunds sooner than this but we were keen not to make promises the bank might not keep.) So we are very concerned that in your review posted several weeks later on 20 December 2024 you say that you had only received a partial refund. If this is correct, this is an issue which needs to be raised urgently with your bank and we suggest that you give them a copy of the refund receipt we’ve already sent you. If you would like us to re-send it to you or if there is anything else we can do to help, please contact us at hello@utalk.com. Wishing you well for the future and thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Easy and erfective way to learn vocabulary

I have been learning Russian from scratch over the last year or so and most of my time has been spent playing the games on uTalk. I have found it a very easy and effective way to learn vocabulary, and many of the phrases have turned out to be useful in practical situations. It is necessary to supplement it with books for the basics of grammar, and with You Tube videos to get used to the sound of conversations, but that would be the case with any on line learning. I especially like the recordings of native speakers, which are infinitely better than any attempt I have heard to reproduce the sounds of a language with AI, and as I mentioned above the choice of vocabulary is sensible and practical. On a recent visit to Kazakhstan, where very little English is spoken and Russian is pretty much essential if you don't speak Kazakh, I was very pleased by how well I managed, and was complimented on my Russian on a number of occasions. Most of this praise is due to uTalk. I am also very impressed with the number of languages on offer, and look forward to starting another one soon.

Your 5⭐ review saying uTalk is an easy and effective way to learn a language has given us a real boost, thank you! 🙏 😊 We designed the app to make it easy, quick and fun for beginners to get started in a new language. Every word you hear is voiced by native speakers, there’s lots of pronunciation practice and the memory-boosting games test you more on words you get wrong. We are pleased to hear that you think the vocab you’ve learned with us is sensible and practical and we’re delighted that you were complimented on your Russian in Kazakhstan. Wishing you lots of good times ahead using your new language skills! PS If you or any of our customers ever need any friendly help or advice, please contact support@utalk.com.

Not even really for beginners

Only for very basic vocabulary, and no explanations AT ALL about grammar, and word meanings in sentences. I would say, not even suitable for a beginner's course, as you will not get to know what exactly you are saying. With this approach, it does not make any sense to advance into the higher lessons as you will memorise reactions to pictures only and get no higher knowledge of the language. Tested it for comparatively easy languages like English, intermediate (Spanish, French), and hard ones (Mongolian). Positive is the use of native speakers - but here as well: no check of correct pronounciation, you have to evaluate it yourself. So, pretty much useless.

This app helps beginners learn how to pronounce and recognise more than 2,500 useful words and phrases. Learning key words in a new language is like the way we all started learning our first language. It works because having early success speaking a language helps motivate us to learn harder stuff – like grammar – further down the line. We also don’t use automatic speech recognition technology (ASR) because, although it is very good, it is unfortunately still not as accurate as the human ear in identifying correct pronunciation. So, our app uses human assessment (the user’s) but we will continue to review the progress of ASR. Finally, you seem an experienced learner who is keen to learn grammar early on in a new language and we congratulate you. If you would like any advice about our range of language learning products, please contact support@utalk.com. Wishing you lots of learning success.
