Product details

Canary seed is now commercially grown in a number of countries across the world and largely for bird food, though the wild plant it comes from is native to the Mediterranean region. Its scientific name is Phalaris canariensis, and it belongs to the botanic family of Poaceae. Canary seed is good for birds because it’s very high in protein compared to other cereal grains. Indeed, canary seed contains 20% protein, with its remaining nutritional value being 8% crude fat, 61% starch and 7% fibre.
At Vine House Farm we’ve long grown canary seed, and therefore have complete control of the product we sell to our customers. We also see the value of feeding canary seed to once common birds to help their numbers recover, with a good example being the increase in House sparrows we’ve seen as a result of the canary seed we put out for them around our yards and farm buildings.

As per the peanuts, the same comment applies; buying in 'bulk' saves a lot of money, and all the birds go MAD for these seeds! I don't put them in a seed feeder as they end up all over the ground, so I just spread them out on top of the lid of one of my water butts that is tucked under my honeysuckle, so the birds have a sheltered spot for feeding.

Not suitable for most bird feeders. I had to alter one to allow it to be effective
