Zero Rating

Would rate zero if could!

Evicting a well loved cafe before they even have planning permission. Closing an airfield including its use by emergency services. Hoping to build on contaminated land. Terrible company.

Hi Rebecca, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. The site at Tollerton is part of the land allocated for development and has been since 2014. Vistry has continued to facilitate the operation of Tollerton Airfield since it purchased the site in June 2022. Vistry continues to work closely with all stakeholders in connection with the Sustainable Urban Extension at Gamston, of which Tollerton Airfield forms part of. In particular, Vistry is working closely with the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance to maintain a safe landing site to ensure that the service can continue during the initial phase of the development. We will continue to work alongside Rushcliffe Borough Council and has consulted widely with the local community.

Incentivised by the horror. VISTRY and Tollerton.

I have received no incentive to comment here, apart from seeing what Vistry are doing in Nottinghamshire.

Vistry are destroying a functional airfield, a General Aviation Community at Tollerton (NOTTINGHAM Airport), where no planning permission has yet been granted. The way they have treated the current businesses and livelihoods of people on there has been nothign short of shocking.

Yes, they are shutting down an active and vibrant local, regional and national resource so they can prove the land is "not used".

You think that is bad enough. What is even worse is the contaminated land that represents the wider site and currently lays undisturbed. In 2008, a report identified a spike of disease amongst home owners adjoining the site where they plan to build. A high level (above the norm) of carinogenic contamination was identied in the samples taken as part of this report. This is material that is aside from the other radioactive contamination from World War Two bombers they found (hundreds where scrapped at this small location) on this site. This is not just any "post-industrial contaminated site" problem and to say it is such really misrepresents the damage radiation does to people, especially when it is left around them. Im not entirely sure how they will square this one away, which makes the closure of the airfield even more cruel.

As well as the future dangers to those buying houses on "reclaimed" greenfield sites, local communities will have dust from the disturbed ground blow at them. You could argue that measures will be put in place but im sure families wouldnt want their children or loved ones getting the smallest whiff of Radioacitve Radium 226 from this development whilst its in progress. Let alone what it means for a child making mud-pies in soil that might just ever so "slightly" be radioactively contaminated,in the back of a families new house on old "Tollerton Airfield". There are what could be described as "powerful forces" buried away beneath this site.

Then, as well as this there is the National Grid that use the sight to monitor the Power Infrastructure which will be evicted. Yes, that's less resillience for you and our powers system as an important refuelling spot is removed impacting the reach of this technical assurance service. Then there is the Air Ambulance that uses this site to deliver critically ill patients, that is transfers from other hospitals to specialist treatment, to the QMC. Or even, rapid moving of ill people from other places or accidents to get them to urgent medical care within that golden hour, this will be lost. Yes this facility is ultimately being closed down and will be lost, but not to worry eh? Just lives at risk and to be lost from now on.

As a site for training pilots, generations of families have gained their private pilots licence here and gone on to fly the planes that take you an me to distant places. A great opportunity for people, being shut down to build houses on land that was used to dispose of radioactive items, with asbestos lined materials left around the site and carinogenic compounds being created as part of disposal activities. You can read about its history online.

So the long and short of it. Developer closing an aviation and community resource that creates jobs, saves lives and assures yours and my national infrastructure. Not to mention the site has already had issues with people on it sadly falling badly sick due to pollution and dear reader, this developer wants to disturb the ground and build houses on the same ground.

Im not sure what you think, but I am horrified and feel Vistry is making some very bad decisions for its shareholders at Tollerton Airfield.

Edit: Vistrygroup have asked for more information apparently, via trustpilot about this review. As they know what they have done and want to do, if it’s not already clear to them I just don’t know
what to say about their attitude and understanding that their
plans will have upon the health of the community.

Edit: As we have seen Vistry's reply below is a copy and paste. It doesn’t matter what I wrote here- Vistry will ignore the real issue's and problems and replay the exact same copy and paste response they put in every review mentioning Tollerton.

They don’t care about their current customers or the communities they destroy - they are only trying to limit the damage to their money-making from another potential site. It is clear that Tollerton is proving trickier to ignore than other sites where they don’t care any more having got their money and run (see some of the more recent reviews for their silence).

I am deeply concerned about Vistry…

I am deeply concerned about Vistry Homes’ plans to build on the Tollerton Airfield site. While the site is currently safe in its existing use as an airport, the risk arises if the ground is disturbed. The area has a known history of contamination due to post-WWII activities, and adjoining land has already been found to contain Radium-226—a dangerous radioactive material.

Digging into the land for construction could release these contaminants, putting future residents and construction workers at risk. It brings to mind the tragic events depicted in the Netflix series Toxic Town, where land disturbance in Corby in the 1990s led to widespread health issues and birth defects. We cannot allow history to repeat itself here.

I will be writing to my MP to express my strong concerns, and I sincerely hope planning permission is not granted. Vistry Homes must prioritise public health and safety over profit. Disturbing potentially contaminated ground is a risk we simply cannot afford to take.

I'm also so sad to see Chocks Away cafe close despite having no planning permission granted as of yet. To force a business to close especially today when things are so hard financially is absolutely disgraceful. I think Vistry Homes need to reconsider their plans. The neighbouring villages do not want more houses built there and it can only cause many arguments in the future.

Potential cancer risk

I lived adjoining land next to an area that has been identified as contaminated by radium and other lethal chemicals, from 1967 to 1982. In 2016 at only 56 I was diagnosed with Myeloma, which is a blood cancer, and rare in my age. Putting it out there, was this anything to do with the land that my family were farming, that Vistry want to build on at Tollerton.

Shame that there's no option for zero stars! This company should be hanging their heads in shame. Destroying such a well loved and important part of a community with no consultation with local residents and then giving a stock response to any feedback or comments stating that they have taken the feelings of the community into account when they clearly haven't. I suspect they closed the businesses before getting planning permission so that the area they want to develop looks like it's useless and falling into a state of disrepair, making it then easier to get the planning permission. Underhand, evil mean spirited tactics. Shame on you.

Let's start with gross neglect towards…

Let's start with gross neglect towards the already existing local community and businesses. Closing an independent family run cafe amongst others, they don't even have a plan never mind planning permission. To build on WW2 contaminated land (Think Toxic Town.) is gross neglect towards any future local community. What do vistrygroup get out of this, ahhhh yes ££££££££££ the only thing that matters to them. ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL. SHAME ON YOU.

Why are they saying they have built on…

Why are they saying they have built on contaminated ground before and have no worries about doing it again ?
When at the end of the war they buried old aircrafts in the ground
Would you be comfortable owning a house and garden with contaminated soil ?
Please think about buy a house at Tollerton airport if they do get planning permission for them that is !!

VISTRY BUILD ON CONTAMINATED LAND BUYER BEWARE

Tollerton airfield set in the Nottinghamshire countryside has an idyllic setting and useful purpose, it is used by light aircraft, air school, the air ambulance (which Vistry will only support during the ‘first phase’ of construction only, what happens after that? And last but not least the chocks away cafe, loved by many which was bullied out of business by Vistry homes whom do not have planning permission.

Not having planning permission yet is an important subject too, the land is highly contaminated by chemicals related to it’s use dating back several decades, if you purchase a property here would you like your children to play in the garden knowing that the ground has been disturbed, releasing whatever is hidden beneath? Obviously these homes are not targeted to the local buyers market.

If you intend to purchase through Vistry ensure you do your research on where the property was built, after all, there’s one thing you can guarantee Vistry care about, and that is PROFIT over people.

Think Carefully and do your research

When purchasing a home you should consider the ethics of the company you are buying from. If they do not respect local communities, nor tenants on land they have acquired, do you really think that they will treat you with respect?

Awful...

Absolutely shocking company. Destroying livelihoods, businesses and historic sites in the name of building shoddy houses. The reviews speak for themselves and I am absolutely gutted to be losing a beloved part of our community.

The fact they appear to have changed their name multiple times says it all really.

doesn't care about you, your community or your home.

This company's website says they "develop places people love to live". So why on earth did they buy up the much-loved Tollerton airfield in Nottinghamshire in order to build OVER it and destroy it? If they genuinely cared about places and communities they'd care about the amenities, businesses and attractions that community has access to. But they don't. They just want to throw up yet another identkit, featureless estate and walk away somewhere else with the profits.

Even worse, they've closed this valuable, historic airfield BEFORE they've got anywhere near getting planning permission. It's likely the site will be too contaminated from WW2 activities to safely build homes on anyway - who would want to live on top of some radium? So a unique local attraction and several thriving businesses have been forced to close years ahead of time, and potentially for nothing at all in the end.

The vital air ambulance service which uses the airfield will eventually be homeless too, with no clear alternative to land that's close enough to the A&E department. Lives will no doubt be lost as a result. It's genuinely shocking.

And reading some of the other reviews here it's not like the houses they do build are any good anyway.

If you want to know why this country seems to be going down the drain, parasites like Vistry are part of the problem. Yes we need more homes - but they can be built in many places...airfields and other community assets are unique, and cannot.

Vistry - if you deliberately destroy the assets of the communities you build in, you lower the value and attractiveness of those communities, and thus the value of the homes you build. This is entirely self-defeating. Please stop the rot and display some social responsibility and respect for your customers for a change - build your houses somewhere else, and build them properly.

Vistry lying, twisting, bad people!

Vistry put up press statements saying they care about community and communication. That is total fabrication. They are about to destroy Tollerton and despite a collosal number of objections, have not engaged with the people at all. They had a damning reputation before this site was even conceieved but since local people have now lost jobs and businesses as a result of the forced closure, and a beautiful area is about to be ruined for profit it can ONLY get worse. In addition, they are quite happy to put young families at risk, and their employees by interfering in contaminated land.
I will tell everyone: Don't deal with any company associated with Vistry!

Avoid this company!

Avoid this company!

They don't even have planning permission yet. They closed a lovely family business, and now the airport is next to go.

These crooks claim that they set up local meetings with the community, which never happened, and that they're working closely with other businesses. It's all a bunch of lies to make them sound legit; there wasn't even a single face-to-face discussion.

This company is great at destroying what people spent years building. Thanks for everything.

P.S. Legacy contamination from WWII activities: adjoining land has already been found to be contaminated with Radium-226.
