Volvo–Google Partnership Bricked Our Car

Emailed Volvo on 12 March 2026 after we were told to update the computer system in our 2025 Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid, which then proceeded to brick the entire system, i.e., cameras no longer worked, no Bluetooth, no tyre pressure, no oil sensor, no outboard sensors whatsoever, no defrost/heating/AC, etc. Volvo finally responded on 3 April 2026. In the meantime, and after a wait of nine days, we were finally able to get into our dealership so they could sort out the mess. However, now we are stuck with the excremental Google v.5.0.5 for the car in which the UI looks like a homemade website by teenagers from ca. 1998. Google is profoundly appalling, and I write this despite being an Android user.

There are far too many apps that cannot be removed and/or adapted to our needs. What if a driver/owner does not want Sirius? Or Waze instead of Google Maps, etc. News flash, not everyone subscribes to streaming services and we don't all think Google is the end all, be all of existence. And why can't we interface with the car via our Android devices to play our OWN music? And the idiot warnings...don't even get me started on the "nanny" reminder messages and automatic so-called safety features. The fact we are unable to leave settings as we want them and must instead reset them EVERY time, as we use them (again, through the appalling Google interface) is unacceptable, e.g., the ridiculous automatic rear braking when backing up, the ability to remove the mobile phone device apps that do not apply to an owner, the horrid Android Auto that STILL won't work despite spending FAR too much time at online Volvo support groups and reading the manual, etc. We should not be stuck with garbage technology that cannot be removed after having spent a small fortune on this car.

The previous system that came with our 2025 Volvo XC90 upon purchase in July 2025 worked well and we were pleased with it. IT. JUST. WORKED. Now, we are questioning our choice of vehicle after having been loyal Volvo owners (two different XC70s) since 2001. Enshittification yet again with no apparent accountability on the part of Volvo other than a set of obsolete instructions to reboot the system on 3 April 2026 that did not work when it was first bricked (our dealership provided the details) nearly three weeks later. Volvo has a great deal to do to re-earn our trust.

Very poor communication

Very poor communication. Called them 5 times to discuss my claim. They always leave a message with the case works or their supervisors and no one ever calls back. They won't let you speak with a case worker or their supervisors directly. Have never even received an email about the claim. The person who answers the phone always says "They're working on it."

I got a used Volvo that needed a head…

I got a used Volvo that needed a head gasket due to them fusing a coolant hose together, instead of putting fittings in. Stupid, but it saved money in manufacturing.
With only 70,000 miles on it, the computer in the transmission went bad. The trans was fine, but the computer was not. After replacing the trans, my power windows started acting up. They worked when they wanted to. What was the problem? The
COMPUTER for the power windows!!!!! You don't need a computer for power windows. All you need is a battery, a motor and a switch. It would cost over $1000. for the dealer to fix it. I sold the car, and I will NEVER buy ANY product Volvo makes ever again.
They over complicate for no good reason except for greed.

Volvo in Poole is not reliable

I went to Volvo in Poole because of a safety recall, and I took the opportunity to have the MOT done by them. The car failed the MOT because there was a problem with the ball joint on the front right side. When the car was delivered to me, after a wheel alignment that they said they did, the steering was pulling to the right. I contacted them and took the car back to them for a new alignment. When the car was delivered to me, the steering was this time pulling to the left and a DSTC fault was showing on the dashboard and the right tyre started to go flat, which had not happened before I took the car to Volvo that day. I went back there the same day and they told me the problem was with my tyres, I went to put new tyres on and at the garage they discovered that I had a crack in the right wheel. Now I am waiting for them to take ownership of the problem they created and fix it. I was thinking of trading my V60 for an XC40 later this year, but at the moment I don't want anything to do with Volvo, just for them to take ownership of their mistake and fix it. My level of trust and satisfaction with Volvo is zero. I did not expect this from a reputable brand like Volvo.

Be careful

Be careful! The service subscription is pure robbery. You have no rights. If the car is sold or even not in use (de-registered), you will pay the full amount until the end...

I purchased a Volvo C40 EV twin 23plate…

I purchased a Volvo C40 EV twin 23plate from Hartwell ford with 7000 miles on the clock I purchased this car has it states on Volvo website it does a combined mileage of 550km or 342miles per charge but I have found this car gets no were near that statement by Volvo . A 100% charge only gets 230miles . Which you have to take into consideration the temp outside inside the car your driving etc because everything you turn on eats power so your lucky to get 170 miles on one charge and this is 79kw extended range car. I took it to Sunderland Volvo and met there Tec guy and he tested it confirmed the car is ok ie battery. He said it has a system which works out your range by your driving. Which is possible when u are on the move. But when charging it outside my house it only goes to 230mile on a full charge not 341miles stated by Volvo So they said make complaint to Volvo uk with in 24 hours no joy they said the same excuses I then Contacted the ombudsman she said write letter to Hartwell ford on this matter reject the car ask for a settlement on issue with company they have 8 weeks to reply before they take up the case so you lose more money . This has been a total eye opener for me has I phone another Volvo dealer and there service guy told me in his own words in real world this car only does 230miles per charge. So be very careful buying this motor .
1, It does not have a combined mileage of 341miles per charge
2 ,Sunderland Volvo very poor at been honesty to customers like me . 1 out of 10
3,Volvo is not to be trusted with any of there figures for Ev range on my C40

Volvo Brighton treat customers badly

Volvo Brighton, Melbourne, Australia, did an oil consumption test on my 2018 XC40 December 24 2024 and I they won't give me the test results. My 2018 model XC 40 is burning oil requiring a top up of 1 litre every month and more recently every 2 weeks. I will continue my campaign of exposing the appalling way they are dealing with a valuable customer by ignoring us. My car began displaying that it needed a litre of engine oil in February 2024 and this is getting worse - now it's every 2 weeks. I can therefore only drive it short distances. The car is not even 6 years old. The poor rating is not just for the car but for the very poor customer service.

Since day 2 our VC40B4 has has lock…

Since day 2 our VC40B4 has has lock issues, and so many more, after 4 visits for repair and 10 months of hell, it has been towed as it has had a total meltdown. They do not care. Lookers do not care. They keep returning a dangerous car saying 'pilot error' despite their own staff and the breakdown team seeing all the problems. Don't buy this terrible car

Near-death experience

Well, there's just no doubt we could have all died.

Not that Courtesy Volvo Cars of Scottsdale (Arizona) gives a damn.

One of their "mechanics" over-inflated the tires on our XC60 to 60 psi. Predictably, this caused a major blowout -- while we were driving west between Phoenix and Los Angeles on Interstate 10, in the middle of nowhere, miles and miles and too many hours from a tow truck.

For the record, Volvo recommends the tires be inflated to 35 psi.

The tire maker itself recommends filling its tires to no more than 51 psi.

An overinflated tire is just as dangerous as an underinflated one.

Here's what Firestone (the tire company) says about it:

"Most seriously, overinflated tires are at greater risk for a blowout. A tire blowout can cause you to lose control of your vehicle and negatively affect braking distance, endangering yourself and others on the road.

"Additionally, many of the safety features on your vehicle, like your anti-lock braking system, are designed to work when tires are filled to the vehicle manufacturer recommendations.

"Overinflated tires could compromise some of your car’s driver assistance functions."

Wow, right?

In our case, the blowout of the driver's side front tire didn't trash just the tire. It caused damage to the driver's side front panel. (There were three of us in the car at the time and, yeah, it was more than unsettling).

According to Courtesy Volvo, repairs would cost about $3,400.

And no, they were definitely not interested in covering any part of that cost -- although at first they told us they'd buy a replacement tire.

But, after all, we were told, there was no way for them to know that we hadn't gone out and overinflated our own tires after they had serviced the car.

Oh, and the tire shop in Indio, Calif., that checked the pressure on the rest of our tires and found they, too, had been overinflated? Well, as Courtesy's service manager told us, who knows what kind of air-pressure gauge they were using??

Heck, he said, it could have been one of those old-fashioned, "unreliable" ones that look like pencils -- the ones your Dad and his Dad used without a problem for decades.

To us, this case illustrates a few nasty things: Negligence, incompetence, an uncaring corporation, disregard of anything but its own bottom line, and an absolute unwillingness to accept responsibility or accountability.

Do business with these jokers at your own peril.

We're taking our case to Volvo U.S.A. and will let you know.

P.S.: We still love our Volvo, just not the people servicing them at this particular dealership.

Rusty before 8 years old- not impressed

I bought a 2015 Volvo just over a year ago for over £20k. A few weeks ago several rust patches appeared on the roof. The car’s in good condition otherwise. Been in touch with Volvo to explore whether the paint was defective and whether it could be covered under the warranty. Though the staff are polite, I’ve got nowhere- don’t think they are taking it seriously. Surely the paint should be suitable to withstand normal wear and tear? Sadly, having wanted a Volvo for many years, there is no way I would buy a Volvo again. I thought they were built to last and expected a higher standard of customer support.
