I had a terrible experience with Wordy

I had a terrible experience with Wordy. I submitted a document, and the editor "L***" decided to proofread it.

When the editor finished, I found out that many mistakes had been made. For example, the editor did not read abbreviations for some previously defined concepts, and the editor marked the abbreviations as mistakes. Another problem was the editor did not put any effort into understanding some technical famous concepts (which is fine, but in our chat, the editor insisted that these concepts are known to her and the highlighted part was for something else).

I am not a native English speaker, but I am not a fool.

I gave the proofread copy to my lab mates, English native speakers. They were surprised and shocked by the proofreader's comments, and they also agreed with what I said. They suggested that they might have used an automatic correction tool, such as, grammarly, and that is why some of the comments did not make sense.

Anyway, I understand mistakes can happen with anyone so I contacted the support and I explained what happened. They eventually sent the document to their CEO, "Anders Schepelern" and he seemed to agree with some of my comments. He offered 50% refund, suggesting that the editor had put time and effort and they deserved to be paid. I said ok, but honestly as a customer, I believe that effort and time are meaningless if there is no quality. And by the way, they haven't refunded me.

I do not really care about what I paid anymore and I do not want the refund, but it is extremely annoying when they treat you as a fool, just because you are not a native speaker.

I have tried two other services and I had an incredible experience.

If anyone is interested to see their proofread copy and how they treat me, feel free to reach out.

Thanks, Abdulrahman, we're sorry that we weren't able to meet your expectations for this job. Please be assured that all Wordy edits are undertaken to the highest standards and that all clients are treated with respect and professional courtesy. Our editors are advanced-level postgraduates with a vast experience. However, they are there to smooth out language and correct any grammatical misuse; they are not academic supervisors and do not offer peer-review services or rewrites of academic material.
For your job specifically – approx. 3,000 words in total – Lori made approx. 550 revisions of which half were insertions and the other half deletions. We've reviewed the job internally, as we always do in cases like this, and haven't been able to find any errors in the language editing. Your issue appears to be that the editor double-checked two subject-specific things with you, but we believe that that was the correct course of action in both cases – to ensure consistency, it's not the editor’s job to make assumptions about your text.
One query related to an abbreviation – you used OntoNotes Normal Forms early in the document, which you then (correctly) abbreviated to ONF. But later in the document you used OntoNotes – the editor queried this just to be sure that you did intend OntoNotes and not ONF; it could easily have been a slip. You seem to consider that the editor should have assumed that you were correct.
Yet, you also used FI and F- in places where the editor considered that F1 was probably intended. Again, the editor raised queries – ‘F1?’ – partly to double-check (this should be F1, yes?) and partly to alert you to the repeated error. You seem, conversely in this situation, to consider that the editor should have assumed that you were incorrect. While almost certain that F1 was intended, the editor flagged your use of FI and F- to you for three reasons: 1) the capital I and the hyphen are on the opposite side of the keyboard from the number 1, so are unlikely to be finger-slips or typos; 2) ‘capital I’ and ‘hyphen’ or ‘dash’ sound nothing like ‘one’, so are unlikely to be a voice recognition software error; and 3) you said in your brief that you ‘have had edited the chapters many times, but my supervisor is still not happy about it. He says the content is fine, but the language should be more scientific’. In other words, the use of FI and F- seemed intentional – it is not possible to aim for the ’1’ key and hit ‘Shift+i’ accidentally. If you deliberately typed FI and F- in place of F1 and your supervisor did not correct it and whoever else edited the chapters many times did not correct it, there was reasonable grounds for bringing it to your attention. If FI and F- were correct, you lost nothing; if they were incorrect, you were alerted to it so that you could rectify the situation.
We don't think it's entirely fair to suggest that we or the editor treated you like a fool; the editor sought only to help you and to raise the quality and accuracy of your text, which they did. That is our aim with all texts.
We stand by our offer to refund you 50% of the price for this job – please note the refund is paid out once the internal review is done. Thanks again for your feedback.

Thanks, Julia. I'm sorry that we weren't able to help you with this job. Rosemary picked up your order one minute after you submitted it, but didn't leave a reason for then cancelling it. We're looking into why this happened. You ordered two jobs: a rewrite, and an editing/proofing of the same piece of work. For this you would have to submit two separate orders. We'll issue a full refund to your selected payment method shortly.

Track changes view

I love your product. One problem I have is that Raul one of the experts he sends the files without the ability to see his corrections. He says that he doesn’t know how to set it up. All other experts share with track changes.

I am a loyal customer of Wordy

I am a loyal customer of Wordy. I have been using it since 2013. I really love this website and I can see how it successfully developed new features that are extremely useful and helpful, such as 'editor team' and 'house style'. However, recently they became so expensive and very slow in claiming jobs. That is why I am giving them 3 stars. I hope they go back to the quality of editing and fast-delivery they used to have when I first started using this website in 2013.

Hi Wid, thanks for your honest feedback! We're adding more US English editors to Wordy in various timezones to bring down turnaround times (we're already quite quick), but of course you should be able to count on our approximate delivery times at all hours of the day.
Regarding pricing, we haven't changed prices since 2017. Our base price is (still) $0.036 per word with a 10% premium if you set an editor team or upload a house style. We're not planning any price hikes in the near future, either, regardless of the "interesting" currency fluctuations in the current market.
Thanks again for both your feedback and your ongoing business; if you have any questions or comments, we're always here for you at support@wordy.com.

I’ve used Wordy for years with great results

I’ve used Wordy for years. I have not found another editing service that would be as responsive. There are variations between editors’ styles, but over 9 out of 10 times I’ve been very happy with the result. They typically deliver faster than the estimated time, which especially delights me.

Thanks, Mikki, I'm so sorry to hear about this. Please note that Wordy is a very-much-live proofreading and copy-editing platform. We service more that 2,000 clients and process just a many jobs per month.

I couldn't find your job/order, but if you ordered a rewrite of a school essay, note that "Wordy editors will only accept jobs they believe to be within their sphere of competence. If on closer examination an editor finds he or she does not have the skills or knowledge needed to complete a job to the highest standard, the editor will return the job or seek guidance. Wordy editors will not provide content editing on university or school assignments, though they will happily provide a light-handed standard edit."

We're always available on support@wordy.com, and on live support during US and UK business hours.

Thanks again for your honest feedback.

Wordy is a great partner

Wordy has been a great partner for several years. Their team is timely and professional and their prices are fair. Wordy is an integral part of our content development process and that is unlikely to change, given the level of work Wordy consistently delivers.

Room for Improvement

Historically, Wordy has been a strong resource for us. Since last Fall (2017) we noticed a significant change in responsiveness and pricing. Pricing went up, turnaround time went down.

Importantly, there is no way to contact for support except for a chat box with a response that says 'we'll get back to you within 8 hours.' That's not acceptable when there is a problem with a job.

Thanks, Linda, to bring down delivery times, we're adding more fixed editors to the platform in February 2018. The most recent price adjustments were due to currency fluctuations (– Wordy is based in the UK and all bookkeeping is done in GBP). We're working hard to improve.

Wordy is a great service and I love how …

Wordy is a great service and I love how easy-to-use the interface is.

On the proofreading side, I've been impressed by the level of detail the proofreaders bring, they catch stuff which makes me exclaim, "Oh thank God they caught that! Good eye!"

On the downside, something in Wordy has changed. In the early days, the proofreaders jumped on jobs the moment you posted it. Now your job sits on the board for a long time before a proofreader claims it. I've cancelled several (probably 4-6) jobs because I felt far too much time had passed before someone claimed it, and we had deadlines to meet.
