Withholding information about huge increase in prices.

I don’t do many Trustpilot reviews, but I feel compelled to share my frustration with this company, hopefully helping others to stay away.

I’ve been using the “Download Monitor” plugin free version for a few years when suddenly, a year ago, they took away the enhanced metrics feature that I needed. I had to pay no less than 108$ for a single year to get it back. Then today, I was charged a whopping 215$ by WPChill without any heads up from them about changes in their price models and the doubled cost. I reached out to them asking to be downgraded, since - as it turns out when I went to check their current prices - the enhanced metrics is now part of their “Basic” package at the price of 69$/year.

The customer service was completely useless and condescending, referring me to their terms and conditions and that they had posted about price changes on their blog. What? This is no way of communicating transparently and honestly. I am appalled by their business methods, scamming people by deliberately withholding important information about changes in prices and packages.

This is not ok, WPChill. And very short sighted, since you’ve lost a customer who otherwise would have happily paid 69$ every year (although that amount in itself is quite a lot) if you had made the effort to set up some decent customer service guidelines. Too bad.

Download Monitor Exorbitant Pricing Increases

Download Monitor – Shocking Price Hike, Zero Support Response

Our customer, after years as a loyal customer, is extremely disappointed with how Download Monitor has handled their recent pricing changes. The cost has ballooned from $135 in 2024 to $398 in 2026 — nearly a 200% increase in two years — with no advance warning or explanation provided.

What makes this worse is the complete silence from their support team. It has been over 11 days since reaching out for clarification, and there has been no response. Attempts to contact the team directly through social media have also gone unanswered.

At $398/year, customers reasonably expect premium support, transparent communication, and a clear justification for such a dramatic price jump. Instead, we've received nothing. For a plugin that markets itself as a reliable, long-term WordPress solution, this level of disregard for paying customers is unacceptable.

I would strongly caution anyone considering Download Monitor to factor in not just the current price, but the risk that it could spike again without notice — and that when you need help, no one may be there to answer.

Predatory business with broken products

Predatory business with broken products. Used a plugin of their 4 years ago and it never work. Kept glitching and they never wanted to help. I deactivated the website and all plugins. There was no way to cancel besides an email I sent. 4 years later I noticed I was still being charged. They refused to refund me. I asked for at least 1 refund literally 1 hour after I was charged for a whole year and they gladly cancelled my account but still wouldn't refund me. So a cancelled account I can't use and no refund for a service that's supposed to be given for a year. Horrible plugins that don't work and horrible company. Stay far away!!!!

Beware, customer service/contact system seems broken or is ignored!

Purchased the plugin and then the problems started; first a Fatal Error in Wordpress, so I removed the plugin. Tried again, this time no Fatal Error, but now the Licenses provided fail (multiple times).... Not impressed.

This is NOT a single plugin, but a group of plugins that also requires the free version to be still installed. This is in my opinion a very inefficient way of supplying functionality (most decent plugins are a single plugin, not multiple ones) and they don’t require the free version to be installed.

So I have now removed the plugin and requested a refund (that was over 48 hours ago); no reply to my support tickets, no refund. Next step is to start a chargeback (dispute) via my bank/card provider!

You have been warned...

Update: Refund now processed, thank you. But as to not finding any tickets/contact emails from me, that is laughable; I sent at least THREE.

Either your ticketing/contact system is broken or you are not looking in the right place; either way this is NOT good customer service/support.

However, I have now updated the rating from 1 to 2 stars.

Another Update, replying to your latest reply:

You said:

"I'm pretty sure you're not a developer since you do not understand or grasp code modularity properly. Having multiple plugins vs. a single one does not translate to better performance—quite the contrary..."

Wrong I have over 45 years in development, systems, servers, security (forensics, malware, spam, ethical hacking, application testing), coding and code review, web, QA, etc. I understand only too well. As to your statement about most plugin shops using the same model as you; that is not my experience.

"A spam filter could have caught your email and bounced silently - really, ANYTHING."

Yes, that could be the case, but in that case it is strange that the order went through and your systems sent me a receipt, login credentials, and so on. It wasn't until I left a review on here that you replied and took action. Maybe you should consider changing your ticketing/contact form system if it is broken/malfunctioning?

"Jumping to reply here, even though it's 20:21 (in my timezone) and this is time I could have spent with my kid, shows that I care; I do not want to hide nor ignore messages."

Fair comment. I am also a family man, and likewise I do not ignore messages, reviews, etc. I was in the middle of cooking the family meal when your latest reply arrived.

"I understand you're upset because you had to wait 48 hours (was that so long?), especially since you purchased our product on a Saturday afternoon - when we don't typically work but spend time with our families—also known as the weekend. It's a big thing here, in Europe."

Your site contact form states "During the week, all requests are typically responded within a 2-hour window, but response times may increase to 24 hours on weekends" So yes, more than 48 hours for a reply or acknowledgement is not acceptable.

For your information I run an online business and offer support to my customers 7 days a week, 365 days a year. So maybe my expectations are higher because I personally offer a very high level of customer support?

P.S. I am in Europe (and a European); I am a sole trader I run all parts of my business myself, no team, no outsourcing, I do everything. However I spent over 35 years working for very large multi-national organisations.

I understand that you want to defend your product and service, but my comments are valid. I Guess we will have to agree to disagree on various points?

Downgraded the rating back to 1 star due to content and tone of your last reply... and I won’t be using your company again in the future.

By the way, your Pricing Plan Comparison Table entry (on the Pricing page of your site) for the Plus Option when clicked it adds the Business Option to the checkout page not the Plus Option!

Final Update:
So you have now resorted to patronising and personal attacks on a customers character and real world experience?

Shameful!

Hi, Martin,

Sorry, it took so long to reply! I've just checked our support systems and couldn't find any conversations associated with your email address. Whatever happened is a mystery to me right now.

I've promptly granted you a refund. We do honor our refund policies 100% of the time.

Sorry for the hiccup!

Nowhere on our site was it advertised that this is a single plugin - quite the contrary. Even when looking at our pricing page, you can see we've got a pricing plan comparison table, and we list EVERY extension available and mention in which pricing package it's included.

You're not the first client who didn't read through to blame it on us. It's OK; we could do even more to prevent these things from happening. I'm just clueless (at least at the time of writing this) about how we should proceed.

Making assumptions about false intent is quite a serious accusation, and you haven't refrained from making any during your review. We have not ignored your messages; we have yet to receive them.

Since this is an email-based support system, and we have to rely on 3rd party providers (mailing servers, helpdesk solutions), anything could have happened somewhere down the road.

A spam filter could have caught your email and bounced silently - really, ANYTHING.

Jumping to reply here, even though it's 20:21 (in my timezone) and this is time I could have spent with my kid, shows that I care; I do not want to hide nor ignore messages.

I jumped on this message the second it hit my Inbox - because I realized something was broken and we failed to deliver on the expectations we've set. I'm sorry about that!

I understand you're upset because you had to wait 48 hours (was that so long?), especially since you purchased our product on a Saturday afternoon - when we don't typically work but spend time with our families—also known as the weekend. It's a big thing here, in Europe.

I'm sorry our plugin didn't meet your standards, and I sincerely hope you'll find a better business to deal with. We'll try to do better next time.

Ah, the proverbial digital stick that confrontational and entitled clients use to beat down companies who won't budge on their stance. Do as I say, or I'll downgrade your rating to 1*.

It sucks, but I get it - you find it empowering. Judging by your profile here on Trustpilot, you leave many 1* reviews. Either no business lives up to your standards, or you're just using it as a tool to get your way.

I'm sorry you're having such a lousy time - both during this conversation as well w/ our product. As you know, from your 80+ years of combined experience (how old are you, by the way? I find it fascinating that you've been running both a business AND 35+ years of working in a big corporation), the software is never perfect, the software is never really "done."

As a professional software developer with over 30+ years of experience, you probably already know this. I shouldn't have had to write it here, but I'm just doing it in case you forgot - our hosting company uses a different mailing service (the one that sent you the purchase receipts) instead of the one we use for our emails.

Most veteran software builders, such as you, prefer using whois.sc - a simple query on our domain name would have revealed our entire mailing setup (look up our MX records).

You still assumed ill intent instead of assuming it was an honest mistake.

I ran your message through ChatGPT and asked it to describe the tone. Here's what it had to say:
- The customer's tone is critical, aggressive, and overall hostile.

Again - I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience with our product (and with all the other poor companies' products you've tried and rated 1*). I'm also happy you've chosen not to be our client ever again.

I've never been a fan of "the customer is always right," but I've been a fan of correctness. You are an unfair (former) customer who weaponizes 1* reviews.

/Cristian.

The plugin is fantastic!

The plugin is fantastic!! It’s so robust.. you can customize it to your heart’s content. And the customer support even BEFORE you go PRO is fantastic. That says a lot about a company. Not just after the sales, but care about the satisfaction of all users.
