It's a scam

It's a scam. They are charging me $170 for a 5 minute call before I consented to start the program. Did not discuss any issues. I had to spell out my info instead of simply filling out a form online.

It is twice as expensive as some regular therapist.

They are paying low salaries to gig workers and charging same amount as actual therapy while giving you an auto generated procedure instead of a real human analyzing and helping. Please save yourself if you are reading this.

You can see a real doctor for same money. AI generated tips can be found for free online.

BEWARE - Hidden Costs & Scripted Therapy

Both my insurance AND AbleTo represented this service as free. I was completely blindsided by a massive bill of $785. They lure you in with promises of cost-free mental health care, then hit you with exorbitant hidden fees.

The initial 20 minute assessment alone cost me $160 – just to be told something I already knew after they did a stupid questionnaire. The subsequent "therapy" sessions were nothing more than scripted nonsense. My therapist fumbled through basic questions and seemed like she didn’t know what to say or advise. She sent me away with elementary level breathing techniques and that was about it. Each of these worthless sessions cost me another $125 each for 45 minutes.

On top of that, their billing is a complete black hole. They don’t warn you or notify you about any of this until it’s too late.

AbleTo's (owned by United Health Care) entire model is based on deception. United Health Care advertise the service as free and AbleTo mislead you into thinking the same. They prey on vulnerable people searching for help, then deliver subpar care at outrageous prices, after they mislead you into thinking it was going to be completely free. There isn’t even a way to cancel without calling them, they just keep calling you and charging you $125. Avoid this company at all costs!

I have reached out to AbleTo and requested a full refund, but I highly doubt they will help :( I can’t afford the $785 and my mental health is worse than before as a result of their terrible services.

Avoid at all costs

Avoid at all costs. This setup practices deceptive pricing by assuring you that your insurance will likely cover the charges when in fact they have no agreement with your insurer (Aetna), offer absolutely no discount, and charge you $300 for spending 90 minutes asking you all of your personal medical and mental health history. Even the therapists warn you to call and validate pricing, but NO ONE ANSWERS THE PHONE! This firm should be investigated by the federal government for fraud.

This was a nightmare

This was a nightmare and I hate therapy so much now, this ruined like months of build up of me actually trying to get help. I called for an initial consultation just to ask if it was covered by insurance and to see if I could afford it; they gave me a phone number to call after the consultation then brushed past it and dove right in. I really just set up the call to learn more abt how therapy works, to see if i need a psychiatrist and if they act as the therapist too, if I’m on the right meds or need diff ones, etc. It was a questionare, they asked the most face level yes or no questions and got annoyed when I dove into detail abt my scenario instead of just saying yes or no. They acted like it was a crime that I didn’t want to share with them the phone numbers of ppl I could call for support in my life. The whole time I felt awful and judged and when it ended they just told me the next steps and booked an appointment with themself, giving me little room to opt to a new person if I wanted, and I felt like analyzed rather than heard by the end of it. When I called later to ask abt the insurance they said it was not at all covered and the first call wasn’t free, it was $160. This put me in such a funk and I don’t really want to make an effort towards therapy again rn if I can get roped into stuff like this, it felt like a scam.

Amazing help.

I have gone to 3 therapist prior to Ableto. Kristen at Ableto was absolutely amazing. I got much more out of her help then the other 3 therapist combined. I have one more session next week then I will be finished with 8 week session. I will miss it greatly.

Capitalism

"What went wrong this time?" That seems a bit defensive. Addiction is a difficult problem. But plenty of opportunities for making money while appearing to address this problem. For the record, this was my first time trying to get help. Like I said, a difficult problem, not easy to solve, but apparently easy to make money while appearing to help.

Don’t Waste Your Time

My first experience with therapy has been very disappointing and frustrating. First appointment was double-booked, so I was contacted by therapist to get my availability for the following week, but she never contacted me to reschedule. I called and booked a different therapist, who never showed up for my appointment. I’m done. Please don’t waste your time like I did.

Not a fit for everyone

Very simplistic approach using scripted questioning with responses that require a numerical rating.

The platform is difficult to navigate, I could not access the video call feature. There are many time-consuming worksheets and “homework exercises” to be completed and then reviewed at the following session.

Worst of all, the therapist/coach talked in circles and left me feeling they were not listening or paying attention. The sessions seemed rushed, not enough time to develop confidence with the “specialist”.

Program may be suitable in an elementary school setting, but not appropriate for an educated adult.

Wasn't even able to start therapy…

Wasn't even able to start therapy because they never let me schedule anything. Signed up, didn't hear anything for 2 weeks except there was a glitch during the time that I signed up but it should be fixed, it wasn't. I emailed twice, called twice and left a voicemail and heard absolutely nothing. I'm someone who would have benefited greatly from therapy but they didn't even give me a chance. Please don't waste your time with this company, they'll make your mental health worse than better.

Spent 90 minutes doing an evaluation…

Spent 90 minutes doing an evaluation only to tell me they couldn't help me. Thank goodness I already met my OOP for the year and owed nothing as they were reimbursed $160 for this even though they claimed that part of it was free. I would have been livid if I owed anything on this. Thanks for wasting my time.

It's a scam

They say they offer evening weekend and flexible appointments. This is far from the truth. I cancelled before I even had an appointment because it was almost a 1 month wait to get something that wasn't at 3 am and they still billed my insurance for a visit? Can you say insurance fraud?

The AbleTo app is a disaster

The app is a disaster. No dashboard shows up when you go in to join an appt, and I haven’t been getting email notices for appts. That means there’s no way to join my session, and no way to let anyone know. I searched online and finally found a number to call, because the only thing listed in the online app is a help email. Representatives could not take my call - there’s no way to get help in the moment. Tried to leave a voicemail but their system cut me off in the middle of my message. This has happened 3 or 4 times in 6 weeks. Each time it is temporarily fixed and then happens again. It is not worth it from a frustration standpoint - my time is valuable, at least to me if not to AbleTo. My therapist is good, but it is all scripted and about checklists. Coaching portion is not what I expected and I feel like I already know what’s being shared. It’s sort of “therapy light” but perhaps better than nothing if you can’t find anything else. However, the cost billed to my employer is pretty high for the services provided, so I am regretting my decision.

Provider perspective

I worked for AbleTo for 2 years and I always felt good about the work I did. I worked with some really great clients who made amazing progress while we worked together. AbleTo provides time limited therapy that follows a set curriculum and may not be a great fit for all clients, but can be really helpful for the right client. I ended up leaving because the pay was low.

Unreliable, don't waste your time

Nice concept, but the practitioners (therapists and coaches) are both completely unreliable, always 15+ minutes late for sessions, canceling last minute, and overall adding more frustration to a practice that's meant to help you ease and manage stress. Defeats the entire purpose and is just a waste of time, unfortunately.

Scammed By AbleTo

So I started therapy back in July of 2023 with AbleTo. This was after a month of trying to find a therapist that would be covered under my insurance, UHC Medicare Advantage (I’m developmentally disabled), and it was UHC that pushed me to use AbleTo. They had multiple virtual behavioral providers listed on their, UHC’s, website with a link taking me to the AbleTo website to set up an appointment.
I initially thought it was a scam and after signing-up online frantically tried to cancel services with AbleTo. Unfortunately there wasn’t a way for me to cancel services before my first consultation appointment. I emailed AbleTo and called their customer services number on their website during business hours. They refused to cancel my account via email and wouldn’t follow-up by calling me. When I called customer support I would be on hold for five minutes then they, AbleTo, would say that they couldn’t help me at that time and hang-up on me.
The first appointment went fine and all subsequent appointments as well.

My therapist was nice and although I don’t think I got much out of our sessions (they were short but mainly due to me being in bad physical health at the time) I thought things were going well. That is until yesterday when I got a letter in the mail from my insurance saying they were denying coverage of my appointments with AbleTo. That’s $125+ per appointment. Yes shame on me for not having called my insurance and checked with them prior to my first appointment but I was never told I had to do that and I was led to believe that my insurance had been covering the appointments.

So I spent all of yesterday politely arguing with UHC’s workers on the phone. Their outsourced workers (just pointing it out as they literally didn’t know what the hell they were talking about). I talked to 5 people on the phone yesterday with UHC and all of them had the same thing to say that they don’t cover LIMHP licensed providers. No where in my documents from UHC Medicare Advantage does it plainly state that and at no point in having services with AbleTo did they mention that insurance wouldn’t cover my appointments or that there could be an issue with the insurance information I provided them. Had I known that AbleTo (a company/provider that UHC sent me to through their website and said they covered) was not a covered provider I would not have continued using their services. In fact I would’ve never signed up for AbleTo in the first place. I am appalled. Absolutely speechless. I’m now having to file multiple appeals with my insurance company and they probably will find some excuse as to why they shouldn’t have to pay for the services AbleTo provided me with.

There is no other way to say this other than AbleTo is borderline a scam. No competent insurance company that actually cares about their clients should be pushing for people to sign-up for services with AbleTo. Proceed with extreme caution if you do chose to use AbleTo for therapy.

Abysmal Communicators- Look Elsewhere

I've been dealing with anxiety for a few years. I've put off getting help because it's expensive and an enormous amount of work to find the right therapist. My wife told me our insurance emailed her about AbleTo and I thought I'd try it out as it was completely free. I was whisked through the online setup and made an appointment - I appreciated how streamlined it felt but it also didn't feel like it was especially specific or that it was representing my needs well. At my appointment, I told them I'd had some therapy as a younger person to work through issues and briefly took antidepressants, but never had any suicidal ideation or other extreme symptoms. I said I was excited about learning some new techniques to help me relax if I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep do to middle of the night anxiety. I also mentioned I wasn't looking to get on medication because my problem didn't seem that extreme and adding side effects to my current mental load was not desirable. After a few minutes of explaining my history and situation, I was told that their therapy program would be a better fit for me (it kind of felt like a decision had been made as I talked and that I was being hurried to get off the phone). I told them that the 8 week CBT course seemed fine and was free and I was concerned with the cost of doing something else. The person said I'd hear back within 48 hours and they'd let me know if insurance would cover the therapy program and the appointment was over. I never heard back. I logged in a week later to see if I could message someone but my whole coaching profile thing had been removed- I couldn't see a place to reach out to anyone, so I sent an email. Someone called me a day or so later and explained there would in fact be a cost for the therapy program. I said I couldn't afford it and it would be great if I could just get back on the 8 week CBT program. The woman I was speaking with said that I'd have to sign back up again through the app as they had removed my old profile. She sent me an email with what I assumed was the link to sign up- I I didn't even bother to open it since I didn't have time in that moment to do the whole process again. When I had some free time today, I went to sign back up but found that there was no link at all- just an email containing the following:

"Thank you for your interest in Ableto. It was a pleasure speaking with you today. I have contacted your coach's supervisor, Carolyn. She informed me that your coaching program ended due to you needing a higher level of care than coaching can support. Therefore, you will need to contact United Healthcare directly to see if they can refer you to a different behavioral healthcare program that would better suit your needs.

My apologies for the inconvenience. Please let me know if you have any questions."

Nobody had made me aware of any of this until I called after they failed to communicate. I have no idea what I said to make them think that my condition is such that they couldn't help me. This was a complete waste of weeks of my time- I'm glad that I wasn't doing worse mentally or it could have been a much scarier experience. AbleTo is too much work for me- I had to be the one to babysit everything and reach out to keep things happening, which is an enormous pain. Also, I'm really curious about who they're trying to treat if my situation is too extreme. If you're struggling and looking to talk to someone about your problems, I'd look elsewhere- my experience showed a complete failure to communicate effectively, which is essential when you want to get better.

Do not get involved with AbleTo

I was referred to AbleTo by my insurance company. My experience with AbleTo was absolutely terrible. I was never able to even register because of their incompetence. After reading some of the other comments on Trustpilot, I am very glad that I did not get involved with AbleTo. Any reputable insurance company should not be referring people in need to AbleTo and should sever their ties to that company immediately.

Horrible company. Don't waste your time.

Horrible company. I was trying it out as my Medicare Advantage plan under UnitedHealthcare suggested I try it. The first problem was that the first session was showing that it would be a phone call and not a video session. I do not enjoy having therapy sessions through phone calls only and much prefer video sessions.
I called customer service and explained the situation to them and they reassured me that the first session would be a video call and not a phone call as my insurance covers video sessions.
Well the day of my first session came and it was still showing that my first session would be nothing more than a phone call. This filled me with anxiety to the point that I had multiple panic attacks prior to my first therapy session. I tried contacting customer service via the phone number on their website twice in the afternoon to cancel services before the first session as I wanted nothing to do with AbleTo at this point. Both times that I called I was on hold for five minutes before an automated voice would say that I was calling afterhours and they couldn't help me before hanging up on me. I looked at the hours listed on their website and I was calling during the listed 9am-8pm ET Monday-Friday operating hours.
I also emailed the customer support people multiple times to get my account canceled and they would either do absolutely nothing and not reply to my emails or send an email a week later saying they couldn't help me with my issue and talking about how they can't delete my medical records as I signed consent forms (something I wasn't even asking them to do and completely irrelevant).
The first therapy session ended up going okay in the end and the therapist was nice and understanding and worked to get a video session going. It was just the initial assessment for therapy with the usual screening for mental health issues questions.
After the session I did get multiple texts from the therapist I will be seeing with irrelevant memes which I wasn't a huge fan of.
Honestly I just want to cancel my account (something I can't do on my own and must have customer support/service do for me) and move on to finding a better service or therapist.
Also, it is my understanding that this company only gives 8 weeks of therapy and then stops supporting it's clients/customers. I'm looking something more long-term. The company seems like a scam as I have never had so much trouble canceling services with a company before. Customer service needs to be more accessible and there should be a way to cancel services and your account from the website. It is illegal in the United States to not allow customers/clients to cancel their accounts/services with a company. If I can not find a way to cancel services in a timely fashion then there will be a complaint filed against AbleTo with my insurance provider UnitedHealthcare and if that doesn't resolve the issue then I will strongly consider taking legal action.

Poor technology attempting to connect therapists to patients like DoorDash.

AbleTo contacted me based on a lead given to them from Aetna. Didn't even make it to the consultation appointment as it was rescheduled 3 separate times. The scheduler and the therapists seemed to both be using technology/software that was not explained to them very well, is seemingly quite confusing and/or not efficient at producing accurate results, and was stumbled through while I was on the phone.

Tech and Medicine both need to slow down and ensure smoother workflows, with customer service at the forefront and not quick profits. Especially when it is so painfully obvious to the end user!

It's OK but nothing special. Try another option

The website is a little misleading and billing structure is very unclear. Seems way too overpriced even with insurance. A couple of my sessions consisted of the counselor talking about forms the whole time. While I appreciate deep breathing techniques and tips to improve my thought patterns, it doesn't seem worth $115 per session. My therapist was very assumptive and did not seem like a good fit for me. I did find some value in talking through some of my issues but the therapist seemed like she had a large case load because I had to repeat my story a couple of times. There is not enough value to pay $700 for all sessions. I would not recommend AbleTo.
