Symptom is a diagnosis! A lot of money for incompetence...
On the 24.12.2021. I brought my dog Elvi, 6 years old, to Anicura Animal Hospital, Poppelstykket 11, Valby, 2450 Copenhagen. The dog did not feel well the previous 2 days, did not eat or drink water. On the morning of 24.12. I have noticed blood in the stool (diarrhea).
We were admitted to the hospital around noon. The doctor made a check-up and it was agreed that the dog would stay in the hospital overnight for therapy, supplementation and (I thought) diagnostics. I was reminded that the price will be around 15,000 dkk. I agreed with the belief that a hospital stay would help determine the causes for a dog having bloody diarrhea, not eating or drinking.
After 24 hours, in which no one from the hospital contacted me, I called the hospital to find out what happened to my dog. After 3 calls and a 3 hour wait, I was finally called by a doctor from the hospital. I got information that the dog is receiving an infusion and some medications, and that blood samples have been taken. Part of the blood tests were done, and for part of the results we will have to wait for the laboratory to open (this is happening during the weekend). The doctor says she would love to leave the dog another night in the hospital for observation.
To my question whether an X-ray or an ultrasound was done or both, the answer is that there is no need!? Since the dog had bleeding in the intestines, I insist on an X-ray to be done! I was told that I would be contacted after the search.
5 hours passed and I was forced to call the hospital again. The doctor calls me back, explains what is visible on the X-ray. The cause of the bleeding was not found, but it is recommended that the dog stay in the hospital for another night for observation. At that moment, I realize that the procedures that have been taken are insufficient, and I insist that the dog is released from the hospital in the evening of December 25, 2021.
Before the dog was handed over to me, I talked to the doctor, now third different one in a day and a half, about the procedures that were done to find out the causes of bloody diarrhea in my dog's stool. The doctor repeats to me that the dog was given intravenous therapy, blood samples were taken for analysis and an X-ray was taken. According to him, the X-ray would not have been done if I had not insisted! Since the results showed that there were no significant changes, obstructions and inflammation in the abdomen, he believes that an X-ray was not even necessary (shouldn`t you check and then conclude?).
As I continue to insist on the answer as to what the diagnosis is, what is the cause of bloody diarrhea, I finally get the answer - bloody diarrhea is the diagnosis! This answer gave me a clear sign - the doctor either doesn't know, or lies, or both. The symptom is not a diagnosis! Hemorrhagic diarrhea is a consequence of the disease (the veterinary literature makes this clear)! It is important that they wanted to keep the dog for another night, on observation, without performing diagnostic tests ...
I came to the hospital with a question - what is the cause of bloody diarrhea in my dog. After the dog was detained for almost 36 hours, after I paid the bill for veterinary services 14,500 dkk, I came out of the hospital with the same question - what is the cause of bloody diarrhea in my dog?
I thought the point of medicine was to treat the cause of the disease, not treat the symptoms. The price of the service is the opposite of the results (a lot of money for no answers)!
I no longer trust the services of the Anicura Animal Hospital. The message to everyone is to avoid them because apart from the high price of services, the question is what kind of treatment can you expect. I still have a sick animal at home, but obviously no one at Anicura Hospital cares about that. It is important that the services are charged... Unprofessional, inhumane, disappointing...
