Apex Vets are brilliant

Apex Vets are brilliant. Our Barney firstly saw Callum for his healthcheck/second vaccine and then also got his nails cut by Chloe. Both are so knowledgeable and great with Barney. We also had to bring Barney back urgently as he ate a bulb in our garden that we didn’t know was toxic to dogs. Apex Vets (Rhiann) managed to book us in within 20 mins of me calling and Kelly made sure he got the treatment he required. Whilst we were waiting Rhiann and Storm were great with reassuring my partner and I that Barney was getting the best care. Barney is now completely better and back to doing zoomies in the garden. Can’t recommend this team enough!

Hi Beth, thank so much for your lovely feedback. It really means a lot to us. We hope Barney is doing well and not been up to any more mischievousness, though we must admit we enjoyed the cuddles with him! We look forward to seeing him in for his monthly weight checks for his preventatives. Take care. Thank you, Rhiann

Today was the first time I am…

Today was the first time I am disappointed with my visit. First time I'm leaving a review.

I feel that apex has lost its personal touch with its rapid expansion.

You are asked to make appointment and I've found I not seen during the time booked and kept waiting for considerable amount of time. No apologies are given, which is the opposite if you are late. I am told you cannot hold the appointment and I would have to wait and I am the one that apologies. Can you see the irony in that.

Today, I was kept awaiting again, no apology or explanation given. I was there for annual booster jabs.

I felt that vet did not give one dog particular once over and inspection but was more thorough with the other. For the first time when been given the injection, one of my dogs yelped in pain. Was told that serum was cold. I am sorry, but I do not accept the explanation given, as the many visits to this surgery my dogs have never done this with any other vet.

When settling the bill, you are no longer given the option to have itemised statement just a receipt.

When I checked when statement sent, it still had outstanding balance(this is another issue, as one of my dogs had mass removed in may, I explained to vet my financial situation and that my insurance would be running out in July and I was assured the paperwork would be rushed through,it wasnt; it was sent in September and now anxious time waiting to see if the bill will be settled) plus treatment I did not ask for.

I contacted vets to query and mistake was noted as there was even a note from vet saying I declined kennel cough treatment. Yet the vet charged me for both dogs. I was assured I would receive a call back with a resolution.

I waited over 30 mins and called myself and i get the impression the person who took the initial inquiry had not done anything and was told conviently that they were just about to call me back when i called. I eventually sorted the refund and it was processed over the phone. If I hadn't checked then I would be none the wiser!

So I go back to opening statement, I feel with the vets rapid expansion they have lost the personal touch and attention to detail.

Good Morning Tom

Thank you for taking the time to feedback and taking my call.

I am please you were comforted by the fact that we have actively restricted growth of the practice over several years, with the specific aim of looking after our existing patients and clients. We made the decision to briefly take on some experienced locum cover rather than run more extended waiting times for routine care. She was here to cover illness in 2 of our vets not expansion. I am sorry that this did not work out with your recent visit.

We are of course sorry for your wait. Particularly if you were not kept up to date with the waiting time. We always aim to keep clients update and minimise any waits. Thank you for highlighting the mischarging that you noted on the statements that we provide by e.mail. I am sorry that this happened, I am pleased that this was resolved on the day.

We have of course grown recently. A big positive of this is that we now have an overnight team looking after our inpatients, we are very proud of this. On the downside, there are of course more faces. As discussed, if you would like to see a specific vet, and it is not an emergency, please ask for them by name.

Your feedback on some of the points has been helpful and has initiated internal review at the next practice meeting. I again thank you for it.

With regards to your comments on personal touch and attention to detail. I hope that from our discussions and during future visits, we will change your mind.

Kind regards
Mr Glenn Hodgson BVM&S MRCVS. Vet

Unfortunately we had to put our wee dog Cody to sleep this week. Been coming to Apex for more than two years with him and he had the best of care there. He was never a fan of vets but seemed so much more at ease with them compared to other vets in the past. Want to thank Rachel who he seen most, and also Sam,for being so good with Cody at the end.

Beware - owners’ opinions not welcome!

My dog was in the practice to receive his vaccination for the year. He also had an ear check and the vet found they were a little swollen so prescribed anti inflammatory medication ear drops. My dog was quite distressed when in the vet consultation room and the vet did not demonstrate to me how to put the ear drops in (if she would have done so I would have recognised that my dog would not have allowed me to put them in).

Once I got home, I tried to administer and my dog became very distressed, would not allow me to administer. I persevered and kept trying for two days, tried two of us, tried a different person trying to administer but still he was quite distressed.

I phoned Apex on the Saturday and asked if I could bring the ear drops back in exchange for another treatment. The nurse on the phone told me I should bring my dog in for a demonstration on how to put the ear drops in, I explained I did not require a demonstration as I knew how to administer, the problem was that my dog did not want me to administer them.

I asked to simply swap for another alternative treatment. I explained he had just been seen by the vet. The nurse told me she could not offer this unless I brought my dog in and paid for a consultation and alternative treatment - I had just been in the practice two days prior and paid for treatment which if the vet would have tried to put in my dogs ear, she would have known my dog would not tolerate. Dissatisfied, I felt the practice were just trying to make money from me and felt very uneasy about the situation so put the phone down and went back to trying another method of putting my dogs ear drops in. Luckily, a distraction technique worked (for anyone struggling- try to administer whilst your dog is waiting at the door to go out for a walk/to the garden).

My dog is seen nearly every two months to have his glands emptied, we are always straight on the phone to the vet if anything is wrong, we are probably on the phone to the vets a little too much! But want to make sure he is looked after as he is like our child! We would pay for anything he needed - but we felt we were being taken advantage of in this case.

My faith was shattered in the practice from then on - at the beginning I thought I had found a genuinely great practice but unfortunately, the owner shattered it even more on the Monday following my phone call with the nurse.

On Monday, I found an email in my inbox from the owner asking me to call him to speak about his concerns which the nurse had escalated to him. The owner had asked me to work with him to “better understand each other” and “take feedback”.

So, I sent a very detailed email allowing him my feedback on what I though was handled wrongly, what I thought could have been said better, even giving my opinion on what the nurse could have said on the phone.

I felt that the nurse was very condescending on the phone and let the owner know this on my emails. He let me know that he had worked with the nurse in question for over 11 years and he had never heard her being condescending over the phone. This may be the case, however, to basically make out like I am lying about her sounding condescending is very unprofessional and I really did not appreciate this from the owner.

He let me know that if I had spoken with him on the Saturday, he would have waived the fee. However, the nurse never mentioned any of this on the phone.

I ended my emails by asking why, if they had known and worked with one another for 11 years, had the nurse not offered to exchange my dogs ear drops for an alternative - waiving the fee?

For asking this question, and offering my feedback - which the owner did ask for on several occasions - my dog was banned from the practice.

In all my years of being a pet owner, in fact in all my years of dealing with ANY business at all I have NEVER experienced bad customer service like it.

So, BEWARE, if you feel strongly about anything, or have an opinion… be careful you may be banned from the practice for sharing it.

Dear Ashleigh,

Firstly I'm so sorry that this has been your experience with us. I do not want our clients left feeling that they have received bad customer service. Believe me when I say the vets and nurses here work long hours to help all the patients that come to see us.

I can see that Glenn (one of the owners) tried to talk to you on the phone at least 5 times because he wanted to explain what was going on and try to help. He was unable to get in touch with you after voicemails and emails.

I can also see that simply swapping out the ear drops with some other ones probably wouldn't have worked because your dog would probably have hated those just as much. When we asked you to come back in, we were in fact planning not put in a long acting ear medication for you which would have saved you having to do any ear drops at all for a whole month. Unfortunately, this is not a treatment that you can do at home, it needs done by one of the vets or nurses which really means you need to come back in for it. The benefit to your dog though would be that you wouldn't need to struggle with him twice a day to get ear drops in which we thought would have made everyone much happier. I do think that it would have been good to ask you on day 1 on your first visit if you thought you would even be able to get drops into your dog and have given the option of trying that long acting drop first, rather than try the twice daily drops. I will review this with the vet that saw you and make sure that this is fed back. There may have been a clinical reason for the particular choice of drop though because not every ear drop will suit every patient or infection.

I still think it would be really useful to talk through all this on the phone or even in person and that offer is still open to you. If you'd rather not talk to Glenn I would fully understand and you are welcome to ask for me (Doug), the other owner of the practice. Again I genuinely would like to try and resolve this so that you don't leave us feeling that you have had poor service from us. Please call the surgery any time on 01324 829989 and I will make time to speak to you.
